Have a look also at my'Standing Male Figure' Here we have ... morea carved wooden Hornbill with pigment and inset bone details in the eye sockets. There are some condition issues but that is to be expected in an authentic artifact that carries considerable age. There is a crack that runs vertically along the left side of the body and the tip of the bill has been repaired/re-attached by a previous owner. I've owned this piece since he early'70's(bought in Cairns Australia) and aside from displaying it prominently in my home have done nothing to it. Measures 26" 66 cm in height. Pigments. Derived from various amalgams of charcoal, lime, ground earth, plants, burnt shells and minerals mixed with tree sap, water and clay have been applied overall. The use of colour is an important aspect of Middle and Upper Sepik River art(The Sepik River Basin being a region of PNG noted for its production of artifacts) It's believed that colouring a carving will increase the power associated with it and carvings are often decorated and re-decorated before important ceremonies. Am including with this bird a loosely woven string bag. Known throughout PNG as a'bilum' bought at the same time. Mid 20th century or earlier. Similar examples seen recently in the collection of Oceanic artifacts in the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver B.C. Bilums are made throughout PNG. Traditionally. As in this example they were made with plant fibres, usinga process known as'looping' or'knotless netting. Many villagers are now finding it easier to use store bought wool and cotton and so the natural examples are relatively rare. Small. Light, strong and woven of indigenous plant fibres this example would have been tucked into a waistband and brought into the jungle to carry any fruit, birds eggs, small animals etc. collected there. Has a handle of wrapped fibres. Measures roughly 9" x 9&

Old Wood Carved Mask Papua New Guinea Lower Sepik Murik Lakes Dead Can Dance
Here is an Old Carved Wood Mask from the Lower Sepik River Murik Lakes Region of Papua New Guinea. This is an intriguing mask. Representing traditional spirit and ceremonial dance aspects, in this hand carved piece. The mask is in good condition, though there are a few small areas where the wood is chipped, lost or show a slight crack, but they are all fairly minor. There is one area on the back of the mask that appears to've been gnawed away by some critter in the distant past, as is shown in one of the photos. It is not noticeable when viewed from the front, and really just adds to the interesting"story" of its past. Overall, this mask is in remarkably good shape and the impressive design of this beautifully crafted mask is one of the best I've seen. It reminds me of the image seen on the Australian music band"Dead ... moreCan Dance" t-shirt. and displays a very powerful presence when exhibited. The mask measures approx. 25" long x 8.25" wide x 6" deep. In size. It weighs about 6.5 lbs. without packaging, so I've estimated it weighing approx. 12 lbs. with proper wrap and packing materials. A New Guinea ancestral spirit ceremonial mask from Papua New Guinea. East Sepik Province, Angriman Village, collected in 1985. This mask is a striking example of New Guinea tribal art. It was made by a carver who had changed villages, so it is atypical of the usual Angriman cerimonial pieces and is unique in it's style. The mask is in very good condition, the grass decoration is delicate from age. Please see photos for details. Materials are wood, paint, grass fibers, and cord. Tattoo motifs hand carved on the lower part. Hooks are used along the Sepik as the rest of PNG for both secular and ceremonial purposes. This superb male figure was collected in New Guinea. It is very well carved and depicts a central figure with finely carved top. It has a great rustic look and measures 13 1/2" tall. The original tag is shown in pic#11. The left eyes shows a slight crack from weather temp changes shown in pic# 11. This piece shows a sheen from handling. I believe, and has not been shellacked. Both a female and a male figure. Tribal handcarving. Hand carved and very large 62" x 14" x 6" seen on pictures up to photo 11 included. On photo 2. You see such a hook ... morein use in a hut along the Sepik river. Collected years ago in Kandigai Village. Upper Sepik region, Papua New Guinea. This suspension large Hook Statue was hand carved to accommodate benevolent spirits. Out of local wood, with eyes of inserted nassa shells and a little skirt of local fiber. He is sticking his tongue out to intimidate evil spirits that would hang around the men's house. Hooks are used along the Sepik as the rest of PNG for both secular and ceremonial purposes. They are suspended in the men´s house and in individual houses to hang valuables or ritual items. They each belonged to individual clans. This one has symbolic meanings because it is both sexes. Other photos are of natives of papua New Guinea. A man's house where such hooks hang, and hook hanging in a house on the sepik that we took while there. Food hooks are used functionally to preserve food: Food goods are hung from the hook in bilums(woven bags) to keep it safe from rats and mice. Suspending food from the food hook discourages vermin. Genuine Old Used Vintage Karaut. Karahut, New Guinea Sepik Magic War Charm 2 Description: A nice old Kara'ut war charm. It was collected in the 1960's in the Sepik River. Abelam region of New Guinea. It was collected after a Sing Sing. I have several other Kara'ut up for sale( they all came from the same collection. Genuine ceremonially used kara'ut are rare. Size: Measures 11 x 35 cm. Condition: The condition is good- please see photos. Karahuts are woven from hibiscus bark twine and sennit fibre. Decorated with boar's teeth, small Nasa shells with applied ochre and charcoal paints. Karahuts are used in a number of ceremonies. During dancing they are held between the teeth using a string coming out from the back about the level of the eyes. When not being used they are hung around the neck and lie in the middle of the ... moreman's back or worn around the neck as a pectoral adornment at sing sing's. The figure looks as if it has horns- this is a misconception. Wild pigs are very aggressive and the wearer of the kara-ut believes that when the'horns' are spouting from his mouth he can adopt its power when fighting. The woven figure depicted an enemy who dangles helplessly impaled on the pigs/fighters teeth. The name of this art form. Kara means'Pig or Boar' and Ut means'net bag' has a significant spiritual context. Contained within the body of the figure is a bundle of magical leaves& herbs that aid the wearer.
