Vintage New Guinea Sepik River Wood spirit figure, 1960's
This is a New Guinea wood figure from the Sepik river area of this remote Island that still has much of it's interior unexplored of all it's well known existence of new species of plant life.Insects& huge unknown forms of biology,a treasure chest of scientific and medical miracles, waiting to be saved& understood. Carved in my opinion in the 1960's or early 70's. The figure is quite typical of the older pieces brought back tourists to New Guinea. It was made with a distinct character that is only to be found from tribal carvers of N.G. It also has a tremendous amount of detail.The tools used. Art in it's purest form.Even if produced for overweight westerners,A stereo typical tourist with the camera hanging on a strap around the neck. The technique. Design is made in a traditional manner. After many years a carver.I ... morewould love to believe could be carved in complete darkness,or perhaps in a sort a halve asleep conscious? Please do not view me.Like I view these artisans with a condescending manner. Farthest thing from the truth and how truly I feel! In fact I am awestruck by every tribal art piece I come across from every region of the world.It brings me pure joy to see all of Mankind's Art works or crafts. A huge part of me that is envious of the cultural life.Without mobiles,fast-food,cars.and all the BS we call being civilized? Their closeness these peoples have with pure adulterated nature.More so,back 40 to 50 years ago, which is not very sharply photographed in my indoor shots,that do lack the sharpness of a better ability to set my camera to the lack of light inside a home under a tinted sunlight, The figure is male and stands 12" inches high or 30.5 cm high. The base is approx. 3"or 7 cm in diameter. There is a aged small very thin crack under above the left eye.Due to lack of the tropical humid climate approx, 1"1/4"or 4 cm thin line,and very tiny chip on the nose 1/3 cm 7/16th of a inch appears to be recent. Description Fine mask collected in Wotam Village at the mouth of the Sepik river in the early 90s. The mask is well worn and was collected by Leslie Martin after it was used in an important ceremony. Classic ancestral design and painted in the usual way for a mask already attached to its head-dress. Up for offer is a very nicely made dance custume from the Middle Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. Overall good condition although the grass skirt is brittle and strands are falling off. The weaving is still rather tight and nicely painted in the traditional way. Approx 21"H x 20"D x 15"W. Of course. With the grass skirt you can add a bit more to the height. Here is an interesting old piece of tribal art! This is a piece that we rescued out of a dumpster a few years ago when a couple in their 90's moved from their home into an assisted living facility. The couple had traveled extensively back in the 1930s and 40s and we feel that this is probably something that they picked up on their travels during that time. Our research indicates that this piece was made by the master carvers in the middle Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. He stands an impressive 39" tall and is made of one solid piece of wood. His eyes are made of shells. And on the"hook" part are white stones or shells. Although he's a bit dusty looking. He has no breakage, mildew, or repairs. quite a rare shell pubic cover worn by initiated men of the papuan gulf. made of one piece of giant shell and holes were drilled trough for wearing. as clearly is seen. The cover has been worn for years an years. the holes had to be re drilled because of wear. imagine how long that takes whil the shell is quite a durable material. a native repair is visible at the bottom. what for me at least. Makes it even more atractive. its clearly a valuable item for the owner and not easily replaced. the shel is almost 7 inches high. any questions. Please ask.

It's one of the coolest pieces I have seen and I have stuff from all over the world. It is 27 inches tall and a foot wide. It has large, exquisitely carved teeth and big eyes. For your consideration. This stunning, LARGE Sepik River Andingamai carved wood mask from Papua, New Guinea. The previous owner of this purchased it in the 60's, but I do not know how old it was at that time. This is a very big statement piece! Measures 31" tall X 16.5" wide and projects from the wall at 8" This is trimmed in woven natural reeds. Fibers and feathers and decorated with braided raffia. The wood is very sound; no cracks or chips, though it is in a very nice old, weathered condition. I'm sure it's lost some of the feathering along the way, as well as the raffia.
