Traditionally danced by men. While playing the character of a woman, the Senufo kpelie mask is a well known art form among the Senufo tribe, characterized by its various perimeter projections, and humanoid features. Their various projections and strange appearance are said to represent the inherent imperfection in humans and humanity. Although this ethnic group spans across a number of African countries, I believe this piece is from the Côte d'Ivoire(aka Ivory Coast) The mask measures approximately 13” long(sans raffia) x 6 1/4" wide. One of the projections has a minor chip on it and another has a minor crack. Having said this though, the mask is in great condition with a large amount of pigmentation still present. A mane of raffia fiber surrounds the mask, and its perimeter is decorated with cowrie shells, widely recognized in West African cultures as a sign of prosperity. This Senufo bronze or alloy diviners bracelet or currency is thought to be over 70 years old and in perfect condition. The Senufo have always been known for their fine work in the arts of metal and wood work. The Senufo are spread across the Ivory Coast. Mali and Burkina Faso. They sustain a living off farming and hunting. The tribal structure is controlled through the rituals of the Poro society who initiate and control the men from as young as seven years old and on. The Senufo spirituality is based on the god and goddess principals. This bracelet is light weight enough to be worn but was also used for currency. This bracelet measures 2.3/4" across with a 2.5" center opening and a 3/4" wrist opening. It is a small size.

Rare Senufo Four Headed Spirit Protector Fetish, DRC
The Senufo produce a rich variety of sculptures. Mainly associated with the poro society. The sculptors and metalsmiths. Endogamous groups responsible for making the cult objects live on their own in a separate part of the village. The attitude shown toward them by other Senufo is a mixture of fear and respect, owing to their privileged relationship with the natural forces that they are capable of channeling in a sculpture. During initiations, headpieces are worn that have a flat, vertical, round or rectangular board on top decorated with paint or pierced work. Many wood carvings of male figures depict these headpieces, sometimes on rhythm pounders used by young initiates, who beat the earth to call upon the ancestors to take part in the ceremony and purify the earth. The carvers also produce ritual female statues. Including mother-and-child ... morefigures, as well as statuettes depicting bush spirits and supernatural beings and equestrian figures. Large statues representing hornbills(often seen also on masks) and used in the lo society as symbols of fertility are the standing birds called porpianong. Figures of the hornbill are used in initiation. And groups of birds on a pole are trophies for the best farmer. Figures of male and female twins and of horsemen are used in divination. These represent the spirit familiars enabling the divination process. The diviners themselves are women, forming the sandogo society. A striking Senufo Kpelie face mask from Cote d'Ivoire with a fine. Subtle patina and nicely-worked adze marks. This piece came from a generalist antique dealer in Davis, California. It has an old collection number on the interior, as visible in the photos. While copies of Kpelie masks appear quite frequently on Ebay, examples showing legitimate age and use, like this one, are rare. The heart-shaped face and protruding lips are style elements of Senufo sculpture. Kepelie masks would dance a funeral of elder women and men, the newly dead that have now joined the ancestors.The Senufo are a large dispersed population living primarily in Ivory Coast and Mali in small self-administered villages supporting themselves primarily as farmers. Large African stool hand carved by the Senufo people in the Ivory Coast. The Senufo people hail from an area spanning from Mali and the extreme western corner of Burkina Faso all the way to Ivory Coast. These were are originally created by the Senufo people as stools. They are easily adapted to use as side tables or coffee tables. Very sleek and simple in design. Each table is carved from a single piece of very dense African high quality hardwood. Or"pombibele, a form unique, even ubiquitous, to the Senufo. The so-called"rhythm pounders" are used at the funerals of important members of the"Poro" Society, a powerful regulatory force throughout much of coastal West Africa. Though these Pombibele are associated with loud booming noises when groups of them are struck on the hard ground, many of them are actually carried, and not used to make sounds at all. The Senufo are the dominant culture in Cote d'Ivoire. And also extend across the border into Mali. The Senufo carve numerous male and female figures in a variety of positions, as well as many remarkable masks. Most adhere rather strictly to a known set of proportions, but some can be quite abstract. It is thought that many Senufo artworks are produced by"professional" carvers known to the village, and this accounts for the rather standardized"look" found in the majority of their figural objects. A snake, two birds, a long nicked turtle, and several things that might be the senufo bird. The long necked turtle and the lizard can be seen on a drum by the same tribe. The drum head is fashioned from animal hide attached with rawhide. Stretched over protruding pegs. T he Senufo are known for their wood carving. A craft practiced by the males of the tribe. However, women are regarded as providing the strength and power of the tribe, thus the symbol of the woman supporting the drum, just as she supports the tribe. These ritual drums were used to summon spirits at special occasions, such as at funerals or at ceremonies initiating young men into adulthood. The Senufo are made up of a number of diverse subgroups who migrated into their current location from the north during the 15th and 16th centuries. Unlike their neighbors to the north they have remained relatively sheltered from intrusive cultures including the Songhai and Hausa. Although they have certainly borrowed knowledge from their neighbors. They have not had to fear constant attacks and social upheaval. This medium-sized figure, 21 inches in height, has all the hallmarks of a classic Senufo sculpture in terms of details and the facts of obvious age and use. Female figures appear during different ceremonies, and unless one knows the specific context of the figure it is often difficult to name the specific use and name of the figure. Figures such as this may have been commissioned by the male"Poro Society" or the female"Tykpa(Tykepa)Society, both which were concerned with initiations, funerals and social control.
