Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE Senufo Kpelie Tribal Mask African Côte d'Ivoire Poro Cowrie Shells& Raffia Normal 0 false false ... morefalse EN-US JA X-NONE Up for bid is an amazing and wonderfully crafted Senufo kpelie mask. Traditionally danced by men. While playing the character of a woman, the Senufo kpelie mask is a well known art form among the Senufo tribe, characterized by its various perimeter projections, and humanoid features. Their various projections and strange appearance are said to represent the inherent imperfection in humans and humanity. Although this ethnic group spans across a number of African countries, I believe this piece is from the Côte d'Ivoire(aka Ivory Coast) The mask measures approximately 13” long(sans raffia) x 6 1/4" wide. One of the projections has a minor chip on it and another has a minor crack. Having said this though, the mask is in great condition with a large amount of pigmentation still present. A mane of raffia fiber surrounds the mask, and its perimeter is decorated with cowrie shells, widely recognized in West African cultures as a sign of prosperity. I will start the bidding off at $35.00. This is a large p olka dotte Senufo helmet mask"Kopnyungo" kno w in the West as a Fire-spitter. Very impressive array of tee th and tusks in ... morenice contrast to two cute chameleons on top. In 2009 portions of my collection were exhibited at the University of Maryland's Mosely Gallery- the exhibition was called"Honoring the Ancestors. Only 170 of my 300+ items could fit in the gallery. This mask was exhibited in that exhibition. I have included photos of that installation as well as other items I am selling or will be selling soon. Janiform(meaning 2-faced) example would have been worn at Poro ceremonies including funerals and would also have fought sorcery( dee bele) and harmful spirits( nikw’abele) At the top of this helmet is a small cup held by two chameleons. The mask was not complete until magical substances( wah) were placed into this receptacle. Additional Information: A superb piece. With matched four-horned faces on either side, one shared pair of ears, and paired figures on top pulling on the bowl which would have held magical elements. Red and white pigments have been applied over the black, but use has worn them away somewhat. Inner patina suggests wear. This large helmet mask known as"Kopnyungo. meaning literally a funeral head mask is worn by senior members of Poro at funerals of deceased and honored members. Large composite masks danced by the Senufo symbolically incorporate a number of different animal motifs to create an image that is aggressive and powerful. The crocodile mouth at the front of this mask incorporates warthog tusks coming out of the upper jaw represent the uncontrolled forces of the bush. This mask is most probably used by Senufo farmers and when worn the dancer would look out through the opening of the mouth. This is an excellent example of Senufo masks. Size: Height: 14.5" width: 25.5" depth: 9" 6 lbs Provenance- some of my items have solid provenance. Others like this do not. I will never make a claim a specific age or tribal usage unless I h

The task of the Wabele society was to destroy negative forces(dee ... morebele) and harmful spirits(nika' abele) that took the shape of monsters and wild animals. Male or female figures such as this were used during Sando divination to carry messages to the spirit world. The diviner. Most often a woman, would cast a set of cowry shells and interpret them. She would then repeat the message to the small figures known as Tu’ule so they could carry it to the spirits and return with an answer for the client. Tui’ule figures such as this are known in a number of local styles and this figure shows long use as there is some softening of features due to much handling. This figure carries subtle Senufo elements and is a strong example of Senufo carving. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. Ph.D. 59729* All content. Senufo Seated Figure Carved Crocodile on Top African
Title, Senufo Seated Figure with Carved Crocodile on Top African Type of Object, Carved sculpture, Country of Origin, Cote d'Ivoire, People, Senufo, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 16 inches H. x 4.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, cracks in head at bask. In stool, chips and holes from insect damage arrested in body and under the stool and in legs, Additional Information: A carving figure sitting on a stool and carrying a framed crocodile figure on the head! The surperstructure featuring a crocodile adds another dimension to this piece. The meaning of this imagery is not known. This carved figure has all the hallmarks of a classic Senufo sculpture in terms of details and the appearance of a well-used surface of the figure. Senufo carvings were used during different ceremonies ... moreand unless one knows the specific context of the figure it is often difficult to name the specific use and name of the figure. However what is presented is a young strong man with a mature facial expression. A strong body and the presence of the antilope on the top. Figures such as this may have been commissioned by the male ‘Poro Society’ or the female ‘Tykpa(Tykepa) Society, both which were concerned with initiations, funerals and social control. She may also have been a Yasungo, a shrine figure or one of a male-female pair representing the first couple known as ‘Kasingele’. What ever her use and appearance she is a strongly carved figure in a local style, however she has an atypical superstructure. Recommended Reading: Glaze. They live principally off the fruits of agriculture and occasionally hunting. Senufo agriculture is typical of the region, including millet, sorghum, maize, rice, and yams. They also grow bananas, manioc, and a host of other crops that have been borrowed from cultures throughout the world. Small farm animals such as sheep, goats, chickens, guinea fowl, and dogs are raised. Minimal amounts of hunting and fishing also contribute to the local ... moreeconomy. Labor is divided between farmers and skilled artisans, and while it was once thought that these segments of society did not intermarry, In addition to a belief in a creator deity, ancestors and nature spirits, a central concept in Senufo religion is a female ancestral spirit called“ancient mother” or“ancient woman, the sacred guiding spirit of each poro society. All adult men belong to the poro society, which maintains the continuity of religious and historical traditions, especially through the cult of the ancestors. The poro is the pillar of communal life. Responsible for initiation and training of the young boys, it is aimed at shaping an accomplished, social man who is integrated to the collective; it aids his entry into public responsibilities. A woman’s association, the sandogo, in charge of divination, is responsible for contact with the bush spirit who might be bothered by the activities of the hunt, farming, or of artisans.

I just bought this BEAUTIFUL Antique Senufo Wedding Mask of the Ivory Coast of Africa. And it is in EXCELLENT CONDITION. It came from the home of an elderly woman, whose mother had purchased it from an African American Museum in North or South Carolina that closed and sold its collection. The original ticket is still on the back(see photo) According to the museum's description this is a double-faced mask used during wedding ceremonies. It symbolizes cosmic duality and insures fertility. The card and ... moretape on the back have discoloration and yellowing typical of old age. We do not know if the number 63 on the card is the year of the sale or a catalogue number. The refinement of the carving of the entire piece, its crispness in execution, have none of the crudeness of later works. The bird on top has great power in its simplicity, and the overall mask expresses the spirituality of a master carver. Totally hand-carved, it probably dates to around 1870. It measures 18 1/2" by 7" at most extreme points. Please check my other auctions for an African Spear from this same collection and email me with any questions. Ivory Coast, Ghana and Mali. The Rhythm Pounder(deble) from the Senufo people of the Ivory Coast was once a crucial prop in both commemorative ancestral rites and in initiations of adolescents to adult society; it was also a benevolent symbol of fertility and a conduit to the departed. The few known male and female rhythm pounder pairs are thought to represent the primordial couple. Referred to as'Pombibele' which means"those who gave birth. Typically it is female figures are represented and it has been speculated that these single figures are one of a pair, the location of the other being unknown. According to Anita Glaze(in Barbier, ed. 1993: 44) however, not all funerary sculpture is commissioned as a pair, nor do all relatively large scale processional display figures necessarily belong to the primordial couple category. A poro society may possess one or more single figures that were initially commissioned as a result of a member's visionary encounter with spirits in dreams or while alone in the fields. These pounders were traditionally used at funeral ceremonies for Poro soc

AFRICAN TRIBAL SENUFO WOOD BRASS & SNAKE SKIN DOUBLE BOWL PIPE
An unusual pipe with a double bowl purchased in 1980 in Liberia. The body of the pipe is made of wood. The bowls and antelope/buffalo heads decoration are made of brass and the stem is wrapped in a snake skin. That type of pipe has been attributed to both Senufo and Bobo people, I think it is Senufo because I have seen other ornaments from that tribe decorated with similar antelope and buffalo heads motifs. The elaborate decoration suggests that it was used as a ceremonial pipe but I bought it for its appearance. Dimensions: 23 ½" long. Stem ¾" diameter, width with the decorations approx. 2" During the time I worked and lived in Liberia I started collecting African art. Both traditional and contemporary, I continued enlarging my collection when, few years later, I returned to work in Africa in Zaire(now Democratic ... moreRepublic of Congo) I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. All such items which I am selling now on Ebay were either purchased by me or received as gifts from my coworkers or missionaries I worked with while in Africa. The authenticity of items used in tribal rituals is notoriously difficult to ascertain. The members of the tribe which use the various artifacts in their rituals attribute to them magical powers and are highly unlikely to sell them. Most of such items on the market were most likely obtained by theft. I have only one mask that I received directly from the tribe and that was after I was invited by one of my coworkers to witness a funeral ceremony. Please do not hesitate to ask for additional information about the item or a different shipping method. If you are interested in African art please check my other listings current and future.

It does so by unveiling illicit behavior and by punishing with supernatural sanctions those who violate rules pertaining to forbidden sexual relations and exogamous marriage. The kafigeledjo figure is concealed within a small hut.
