A beautifully symmetric Senufo Kpelie mask. The depiction of palm nuts at the top of the mask symbolize the wood carving profession. I purchased this ... morethree years ago from a private French collector. They described it as 19th century but I believe it is from the second half 20th century. I could be wrong. In 2009 portions of my collection were exhibited at the University of Maryland's Mosely Gallery- the exhibition was called"Honoring the Ancestors. Only 170 of my 300+ items could fit in the gallery. This mask was exhibited in that exhibition. You can see it hanging on the wall. I have included photos of that installation as well as other items I am selling or will be selling soon. This Kpeli-yehe mask combines elements of Senufo mythology and culturally known symbols. The horns are those of the powerful buffalo important to Poro initiates. The small legs below the chin symbolize the hornbill bird. One of the Senufo primordial creatures and the first to be hunted by men. The heart-shaped face and protruding lips are style elements of Senufo sculpture. Kepelie masks would dance a funeral of elder women and men, the newly dead that have now joined the ancestors. The Senufo are a large dispersed population living primarily in Ivory Coast and Mali in small self-administered villages supporting themselves primarily as farmers. Though generally autonomous the villages are joined through a shared menâ's secret society known as Poro or Pondo that is responsible for the initiation of young boys and men into different levels of society and to exercise social control and instruct members and initiates in religious wisdom and knowledge of the bush spirits. Women have their counterpart to this ion their divination society known as Sando. Among the Senufo people funerary ceremonies serve as a primary occasion for the appearance art during ritual displays. It is during the funerals of senior members of the Poro society and woman's society that dances to celebrate the life of the deceased. Size: Height: 13&qu

The sistrums in general are composed of rattling discs (calabash slices, metal, etc.), threaded on a rod and which, by shaking, collide, producing a dry ... moreand noisy sound similar to that of a rattle. The sistrum has been known since ancient times. It still survives today in West African rites among various populations: Bambara (Bamana), Bozo, Senufo, Dogon etc …. The West African calabash sistrum “WASAMBA” of the Bambara (Bamana), “WASAMAKA” of the Senufo (Senoufo) or “WANDYERMA” of the Dogon…. distinguishes itself from other sistrums which are generally metallic. It consists of a forked branch in the shape of V inverted, the longest and largest part of which serves as a handle; in the thinnest branch are threaded calabash washers mounted in pairs whose concave sides are placed one against t.

Pigment, vegetal fiber, Approximate Age, Second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 9 inches H. x 3 inches W. x 2.5 inches D, Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, wear. Crack in hedchips, shallow cracks in head, Additional Information: A well carved female figure sitting on a four-leg circular stool. Carrying a child in her hands. What is special on this piece is its hirstyle decorated with a carved double head on top. The figure has a beautiful worn patina and shows much handling! Such figures may have been commissioned by the male ‘Poro Society’ or the female ‘Tykpa(Tykepa) Society, both which were concerned with initiations, funerals and social control. She may also have been a Yasungo, a shrine figure or one of a male-female pair representing the first couple known as ‘Kasingele’. What ever her use and appearance she is a strongly carved figure in a local style that is typical of Senufo forms. Senufo figures were used during different ceremonies and unless one knows the specific context of the figure it is often difficult to name the specific use and name of the figure. However what is presented is a mature woman recognized here by her breasts. Facial expression, body scarification, and hairstyle. Recommended Reading: Kerchache's ART OF AFRICA. 87766* All content. Been told late 1800's or early 1900's A nice Senufo Kpelie mask with nice encrustation and wear. Great color. The horn-bill depicted on the top of the mask is one of the first creatures on earth in Senufo mythology- is an important symbol for the Senufo and appears on many of their carvings. I purchased this from an estate; I have consulted many local collectors and they have told me that this is late 1800's or early 1900's. They tell me that look at the age of the wood and you can tell this is an old primitive piece. I have no idea what is true regarding this item. Although it was always owned and worn by a man. Kpelie represented the concept of feminine beauty and fertility. The unique features which characterize the Kpelie mask include elongated flanges radiating from the bottom part of the mask. Which are a reference to the horn-bill bird. The horns on the mask refer to the ram, an important sacrificial animal. The Kpelie mask was used at initiation in the societies for boys. Adolescents, and adults, at funeral rituals designed to lead the spirit into the land of the dead, and at harvest festivals to thank the ancestors for a good crop. Kpelie- whether in carved wood or cast bronze copper alloy- are usually oval in shape with arched crescent shaped eyebrows over narrow slit eyes. The small mouth opens below a slender nose. Scarification marks add to presentation of what is considered beautiful to the Senufo. On either side of the temples are semicircular and rectangular shapes that represe

Powerful Senufo Traditional Mali Wood Carved African Helmut Art, Mask Serpent
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 All African masks represent spirits or ancestors. And were most powerfully used in initiation ceremonies as expressions of continuity, fear, and morality. They were also used in dances for festive occasions, for instance in harvest celebrations. Some masks were intended to shock. Horrify and paraded to terrify the audience, others to astonish or make audience laugh. I got this helmet mask or headpiece at a sale of African antiquities. INCLUDED WERE FON GURO BAOULE FANG GABON GALOA PUNU GABON KWELE IGBO SUAGA SENUFO AND OTHER AFRICAN TRIBAL MASKS. I believe this one may be Senufo because they combine features of animals and humans in a single design. The Senufo were farmers. And this piece features a rooster locked in combat with a python or cobra above the head of an ... moreancestor or god(probably an ancestor because of the marks on the side of the face and forehead) The rooster is trying to bite the snake in half while the snake is biting the rooster's leg. The snake has two heads, each pressed against the side of the human or god's head at ear level. Scary stuff! It is a very powerful figure visually and probably symbolizes(at least in part) the Senufos' life struggle for food and survival. It is carved from a single piece of wood. Senufo figures are created by specialist artists who live apart from the rest of their village. The Senufo artists have a high status in their society as their masks and sculptures are believed to have the power to help communication between the living and their dead ancestors. Senufo masks are used in the rites of the Park society. A male organization that educates young men in their traditions and responsibilities necessary for their coming of age. The Senufo worship their ancestors. Particularly the Kolotyolo"The Ancient Mother" who holds so much power that she must be approached carefully, and through intervention from lesser gods. The Senufo artists have a high status in their society as th

It is very well carved with the hallmarks of classic Senufo sculpture in terms of details and style. She has classic Senufo features enhanced by complex scarification on her face and the front and back of her body and wears a well-defined coiffure. The figure depicts a mature woman in her prime as evident from her jutting breasts. Scarification markings and well-defined thighs and hips. Her hairstyle is typical Senufo and represents a stylized bird. One of the five primordial creatures in the Senufo pantheon. The face is an abstract classic with subtle and beautifully designed features with an elegant long nose and elegant facial markings and a mouth that is quietly defined. She has an elaborate hairstyle. Well modeled shoulders, sharply jutting breasts, and an elegant curve to her back. The surface is worn and shows some age. Whatever her use and ceremonial appearance she is a beautifully carved figure reflecting the skill and aesthetic sensibilities of the Senufo carver. 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false West African Cote d'Ivoire Ivory Coast Brass Bronze Senufo Kpelie/ Kpeliye'e Mask An unusual piece over all. A Senufo metal pendant mask with cast chain and hollow beads. The wrought chain and cast beads connected appear to be unique. Cast in brass(or bronze) most likely by Senufo casters guild known as Kpeene. This appears to be a Kodoli-yehe mask. Which combines elements of Senufo mythology and culturally known symbols. The horns are those of the buffalo important to Poro initiates and legs below the chin symbolize the hornbill bird, one of the Senufo primordial creatures and the first to be hunted by men. The shape of the face, the metal details around the eyes, horns, ears, hornbill and protruding lips are well known style elements of Senufo sculpture. UNIQUE! Old Bronze Senufo Dogon African Tribal Cannibal Ritual Carved Cup Lid
Here is a great old bronze tribal piece! I'm no expert but what I've researched it seems to be from the Senufo or Dogon tribes. It's two pieces.a lid and a goblet cup bowl vessel carved an molded out of bronze. Possibly used for medicinal purposes. Very heavy/solid piece. Great patina! A few extremely small pin holes with largest one shown in the pic. But hardly visible unless held up to the light and certainly doesn't take away from the beauty of the piece. Not uncommon for such an old handmade piece. the lid has two figures which seen to be eating or playing instruments? A ring with a head is between them. Please view the pics I've added as this will show/describe the item better than I can. Any questions. Feel free to ask and I will try to answer or get a better pic for you. I also have another similar one up for auction ... moreso please check it out too! Shipping is FREE to continental U.S. and will be shipped U.S. priority mail with insurance ASAP! Thanks for looking and enjoy the auction!

She would then repeat the message to the small figures known as Tu’ule so they could carry it to the spirits and return with an answer for the client. Small Tu’ule figures such as this are known in a number of local styles and this figure shows long use as there is some softening of features due to much handling. Huge West African Senufo Bird Sculpture
I have a large carving that originated in West Africa. Created by the Senufo people, and was used in the"Poro" ceremonies. The Poro ceremony is a ritual by which the young males of the tribe are initiated into manhood, and educated in tribal customs, cohesion, and regeneration of the world. A carving of this size is very rare. Was owned by, and on display at the Indianapolis Childrens Museum, the worlds largest'childrens' museum. Has the museum's catalog# written on it. The Senufo are a numerically important people. In the Northern Ivory Coast, and Southeastern Mali. The sophistication, the intensive development of their sculptural traditions, have long engaged the interest of students of African art. This famous piece of Senufo statuary, is the"Poropianong" meaning, mother of the Poro child' Many of the ... moresecret Poro Societies would have one of these large standing bird sculptures. The statue was kept in the sacred forest, and was used in rites of passage, for the admission of the initiates into the final phase of training. This is an authentic piece, and not a piece made for sale to collectors. Try as you might, I do not believe you will find another like it in the entire world. Priced fairly at $5,000, I believe it could bring considersbly more to a collector at auction. Your inspection is invited. Piece is located in Indianapols, In. Thanks for looking, Dennis 317-507-4321

African tribal Senufo maternity statue sculpture ethnographic art, divination
This is an amazing representation of a Senufo mother and baby for a bush spirit or mandeo used by trance diviners. The carving is exquisite the patina remarkable. Statues of this style date back to the early 20th century. She is 23" tall by 5" wide and 6" deep and sits on a traditional four leg stool. Offerings are often poured on the feet which confirm that the figure was one of the many kinds of bush spirits that possess komien. Trance diviners. The personal name of this spirit is now lost, but some of her character may be visible in the unusually open composition and the energy with which she holds her child. Her dynamic posture and smooth muscles reveal her to be an energetic spirit, a type often seen in performances who dances vigorously and is very talkative. A remarkable statue with a commanding presence. A very collectible ... morepiece of the highest quality. The color is very dark brown almost black. The practice of divination is universal among the Senufo. The diviner consults the spirit in order to help a client resolve problems and obtain better fortune. Most diviners are women though the calling is also open to men. The statues are set out with other paraphernalia in the consulting room and the diviner plies them with a long stream of questions in the course of the seance. Members of the sandogo. The village divination society dance around these statues. The color is very dark brown almost black. She is also adorned with cowrie shells. A spectacular piece worthy of the finest collection.

Figure - (Pombibele) Senufo peoples, Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa
Figure- Pombibele) Senufo peoples. Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa The Senufo are the dominant culture in Cote d'Ivoire. And across the border into Mali. They carved numerous male and female figures as well as many remarkable masks. Most adhere rather strictly to a known set of proportions, but some can be quite abstract. Many Senufo art-works were produced by"professional"carvers known to the village. And this accounts for the rather standardized"look" found in the majority of their traditional(archetype) figural objects. Among the Senufo statues of this category are known as rhythm pounder(Pombibele) figures. The rhythm pounders were used in both funeral and initiation ceremonies. This is a skillfully-crafted example of one of the most famous of West African sculptures. So-called"rhythm pounders" were used ... moreduring the funerals of important members of the"Poro" Society- a very powerful regulatory force throughout much of coastal West Africa. They are associated with loud booming noises when groups of them are struck on the ground. Many are actually carried, and not used to make a sound at all. Condition: see photos) Measures 56 inches tall x 8 inches wide x 7.5 inches deep. A VERY GOOD example. With age and excellent patina. Various stable age cracks. Erosion, wear, scuffs/ scrapes and repairs(to insect damage) exist. Nice display of scarifications on the figure, and symbolic snake on the base. Examples such as this are not easy to find. And will be expensive. International buyers. Shipping costs will be more and dependent on your area and customs procedures.

But nevertheless can be identified by their heart-shaped ... morefaces, arrowshaped noses and crescent coiffures. Their height varies from 15 to 120 cm. Among the most famous statues of African art are a series known as the Pombibele, those who give birth' These are large figures, 120 cm high, used during the funeral ceremonies of Poro society members. In the central Senufo area they are left standing in the middle of the ceremonial ground, while in the southern Senufo area, they are carried and then pounded on the ground, providing rhythm for the dancers. This ceremonial led to the calling of these statues by the popular name of'rhythm pounders' Smaller statues representing divination figures or nature spirits have also been made. They are given offerings, which are sometimes made through a cup at the top of their head, thus giving the entire figure a rich black oily patina. When carved in pairs, they symbolize the primordial couple- an ideal Senufo nuclear family who respects its ancestors. Secret societies also used figures, referred to as a Kafigelejo, which personify spirits with judiciary and punitive powers. These are completely covered with a piece of cloth and bear a thick encrusted patina. Large bird figures ca

Great sculpture of a standing woman holding what appears to be a gourd/pot(for food, holding items, a musical instrument of some type? Details on the woman. Which are wonderful show her wearing a necklace and bracelets, a large braid going down the back of her head, decoration on her body(scarification? and decoration on the gourd. Bronze casting has a long history in Africa. Going back to the 14th or 15th century, and culminating in the beautiful bronze wall plaques in Benin that record the images of the warriors that fought in the service of the Oba, King of Benin. I was told by an African friend that figures such as this one, and the other wonderful pieces in the collection I was recently able to buy, had various ... moremeanings for the individuals who owned them. They would have been taken into the“society house” similar to a meeting place, church, shrine) and used for various rituals or individual, personal issues. Pieces such as this are made in the lost wax process. Where a mold is put over a wax original, the wax burned out, and the void replaced with molten metal. Each piece is unique. Work has a nice patina to it and is in excellent condition. Watch for the other wonderful bronze works I bought and will list. gsrx_vers_566(GS 6.7.1(566)

The sculptors and metalsmiths, endogamous groups responsible for making the cult objects live on their own in a separate part of the village. Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, People, Senufo, Materials, wood, Approximate Age, Mid/second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height: 27.5 inches, Overall Condition, Poor. Damage/Repair, Cracks with old repairs in left arm. Other minor cracks in places, scratches, dents, ... moreand chips, Provenance: From an old Oregon collection. The former owner got it on one of his trips to Africa. Which were in 1942, 1949, 1962. Additional Information: This Senufo maternity figure reflects a tradition of sculpture fixed in core Senufo beliefs expressed in symbolic form. The surface is worn and stained. And there is evidence of wear through time and use. The style of carving of this seated maternity figure reinforces the possibility of an earlier period of sculpture. Sitting in quiet dignity she nurses and sustains a child as a symbol for the village and its population as a nurturing ideal. She has classic Senufo features with typical scarification extending from the corners of her mouth to her ears characterizing her portrayal as a mature Senufo woman. The figure is carved in a dramatic and strongly expressive form with sharply jutting breasts and an elegant curve to her back. She wears arm bands and bracelets. This is a finely carved figure from the greater Ivory Coast region, perhaps among the northern Senufo reflecting the skill of an artist in capturing an essential image of womanhood. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulu
