A beautifully symmetric Senufo Kpelie mask. The depiction of palm nuts at the top of the mask symbolize the wood carving profession. I purchased this ... morethree years ago from a private French collector. They described it as 19th century but I believe it is from the second half 20th century. I could be wrong. In 2009 portions of my collection were exhibited at the University of Maryland's Mosely Gallery- the exhibition was called"Honoring the Ancestors. Only 170 of my 300+ items could fit in the gallery. This mask was exhibited in that exhibition. You can see it hanging on the wall. I have included photos of that installation as well as other items I am selling or will be selling soon. This Kpeli-yehe mask combines elements of Senufo mythology and culturally known symbols. The horns are those of the powerful buffalo important to Poro initiates. The small legs below the chin symbolize the hornbill bird. One of the Senufo primordial creatures and the first to be hunted by men. The heart-shaped face and protruding lips are style elements of Senufo sculpture. Kepelie masks would dance a funeral of elder women and men, the newly dead that have now joined the ancestors. The Senufo are a large dispersed population living primarily in Ivory Coast and Mali in small self-administered villages supporting themselves primarily as farmers. Though generally autonomous the villages are joined through a shared menâ's secret society known as Poro or Pondo that is responsible for the initiation of young boys and men into different levels of society and to exercise social control and instruct members and initiates in religious wisdom and knowledge of the bush spirits. Women have their counterpart to this ion their divination society known as Sando. Among the Senufo people funerary ceremonies serve as a primary occasion for the appearance art during ritual displays. It is during the funerals of senior members of the Poro society and woman's society that dances to celebrate the life of the deceased. Size: Height: 13&qu

This striking mask has been in the consignor’s family“as long as she can remember” so is at least 50 years old and looks as if it could be much older. ... moreThe piece measures 15” tall x 8 ¾” x 5 3/8” overall and features crisply rendered scarification on a grungy. Smooth, dry surface. It has seen its share of abuse(the kids would play with it when the parents weren’t watching) so you will note numerous small losses in the wood as well as a glued chip on the back. African Tribal Collection - Senufo Wanyugo Fire Spitter, Cote D'ivoire
African Tribal Collection. Senufo Wanyugo Fire Spitter. Description Authentic African antiquities& artefacts for discerning collectors(Most pieces sourced by us direct from remote villages) THE AFRICAN TRIBAL COLLECTION Item Number: MA0001 Originates from: Cote d'Ivoire Tribe: Senufo Materials: Wood. Kaolin paint pigments Condition: Weathered; fair condition Approximate age: Early 20th Century Measurements cm: Length 63 Height 38 Width 32 This stunning early 20th century helmet mask from the Senufo people was collected by us many years ago from a village near Boundiali Cote D'ivoire and has been in our private collection. Wanyugo. Is the double-sided construction of the popular"firespitter" kponyungo Helmet mask made by the Senufos. The wanyugo. Same as the kponyungo, is a"funeral head" mask used by the Poro ... moresociety of the Senufo ethnic group. The influential Poro Society dominates an initiation system tasked with the educational and spiritual formation of young tribe members. The Wanyugo is even deemed more powerful than the single-faced Kponyungo Firespitter mask. The threatening appearance of this rare double-headed mask. Relates to its purpose. Fierce, sharp fangs and a variety of smaller tusks and horns are meant to frighten away evil, for this mask battled the forces of malevolent spirits that haunt the world of the living. The long snouts further recalls the mouth of an aggressive warthog. The mask derives its power from magical and medicinal substances that would have been placed inside the small dish on top of the mask. However, the power of this mask could not be fully effective until it was worn and danced. The identity of the masquerader would have been further concealed by a cloth costume attached to the base of the helmet mask. Such masks are sometimes known as“firespitters” after the belief that hot coals were contained inside the mouth and spewed forth by the dancer, a frightening effect that underscores the forceful nature of such masks. Due to the dangerous powers

Additional Information: This is a wonderful example of a standing female figure with beautiful body lines in the finest Senufo tradition. The Senufo are the dominant culture in Cote d'Ivoire. And across the border into Mali. The Senufo carve numerous male and female figures as well as many remarkable masks. Most adhere rather strictly to a known set of proportions, but some can be quite abstract. It is thought that many Senufo artworks are produced by"professional" carvers known to the village, and this accounts for the rather standardized"look" found in the majority of their figural objects. Among the Senufo statues of this category are known as rhythm pounder(Pombibele) figures. The rhythm pounders were used in both funeral and initiation ceremonies. A skillfully-crafted example of one of the most famous of West African sculptures. The so-called"rhythm pounders" are used at the funerals of important members of the"Poro" Society. A powerful regulatory force throughout much of coastal West Africa. They are associated wi

SENUFO firespitter Kponyugo Kponyungo African Mali Chameleon - no reserve
This large helmet mask known as"Kopnyungo. meaning literally “funeral head mask” is worn by senior members of Poro at funerals of deceased and honored members. Large composite masks danced by the Senufo symbolically incorporate a number of different animal motifs to create an image that is aggressive and powerful. The crocodile mouth at the front of this mask incorporates warthog tusks coming out of the upper jaw represent the uncontrolled forces of the bush. This mask is most probably used by Senufo farmers and when worn the dancer would look out through the opening of the mouth. Origin: Ivorry Coast Size: Height 39 cm. 15,35 Inches) XX century Check out my other items or only Auction T. B Background T he Senufo are a group of people living in northern Cote d'Ivoire and Mali. They are known as excellent farmers and are made up of a number of different groups who moved south to Mali and Cote d'Ivoire in the 15 and 16th centuries. The Senufo follow a strict caste-like system. In which the farmer is at the top and the musicians are on the bottom rung of the society. One of the great honors for a Senefou male is to become the sambali, or champion cultivator. The sambali is respected throughout the region and in his old age is given predominantly leadership roles. Another society for Senefou ... moremales is the poro. The poro is usually located in the forest and serves as a school for young men until they reach adulthood. Much sculptured work is made in the poro this is where much of the wood carvings, brass sculptures, and masks are made. Sometimes these are sold to local artisans. The greatest achievement for a Senefou woman is the ability to cook well. If a girl or woman cannot cook well it is a great shame to the family, especially the mother. The womans society, known as the sandogo is mainly responsible for divination. A very animistic society the Senefou believe that everything is a result of the ancestor spirits. If a ritual is not performed correctly then the spirit will cause drought. Infertility, or prolonged illness. This Kodoli-yehe mask combines elements of Senufo mythology and culturally known symbols. The horns are those of the powerful buffalo important to Poro initiates. Though generally autonomous. The villages are joined through a shared mens secret society known as Poro or Pondo that is responsible for the initiation of young boys and men into different levels of society. Women have their counterpart to Poro in their divination society known as Sando. Among the Senufo people, funerary ceremonies serve as a primary occasion for the appearance of art. It is during the funerals of senior members of the Poro society and woman's Tykpe society that masked dancers celebrate the life of the deceased and honor them as new ancestors. Complexly sculpted masks in wood or cast in bronze or brass known as Kodoli-yehe masks are worn and danced by the young blacksmith initiates into Poro during funerals. The cord attaching the pulley to the loom was passed through the holes in the head and would be tied to a crossbar of the loom. The roller(generally an old thread spool) over which another cord moved up and downwards was held in place between the two legs of the pulley by a small stick pushed through the center hole of the spool from one leg to the other. The heddle pulley is an integral component for the double-shed loom so common in West Africa where it would open spaces so that the warp(the lengthwise threads) would be separated from the weft threads(horizontal or crossing threads) to allow a shuttle to pass through with the weft threads. 73096* All content. AUTHENTIC AFRICAN OLD SENUFO ANTHROPOMORPHIC HEDDLE PULLEY from Liberia
I obtained this heddle pulley from Cape Mount region in Liberia. It is a part of a narrow weave loom used extensively in West Africa. The strips of fabric woven on such looms are later stitched together to make garments or blankets. Traditionally the looms have been operated by men. At least in 1980's in Liberia, I have not seen a woman working at a loom. It was also mostly men that were wearing such garments. Women tended to dress in much thinner cotton lappas(wrap around) which were either printed or tie and die batiks. It is perhaps not surprising that most of the decorated heddle pulleys are in female form, even the anthropomorphic motif of a bird on this pulley is unmistakably female(cubist? Dimensions: approx. 9" tall and 4" wide I am not aware of any ritual meaning attributed to the pulleys but almost every activity in ... moretribal life seemed to require some kind of"medicine" to run smoothly. It was the medicine that needed to be"fed" by sacrifice(usually of a fowl) to be effective. The sacrificial fowl was not wasted though but usually ended up in the pot and eaten. Rare, Vintage, Burkina Faso, Senufo Cast Bronze Female Figure
Rare. Old, African cast bronze female figure, 6 3/4" H, from Burkina Faso, I was told by the Senufo because of the face. Great sculpture of a standing woman holding what appears to be a gourd/pot(for food, holding items, a musical instrument of some type? Details on the woman. Which are wonderful, show her wearing a necklace and bracelets, a large braid going down the back of her head, decoration on her body(scarification? and decoration on the gourd. Bronze casting has a long history in Africa. Going back to the 14th or 15th century, and culminating in the beautiful bronze wall plaques in Benin that record the images of the warriors that fought in the service of the Oba, King of Benin. I was told by an African friend that figures such as this one, and the other pieces in the collection I was recently able to buy, had various meanings ... morefor the individuals who owned them. They would have been taken into the“society house” similar to a meeting place, church, shrine) and used for various rituals or individual, personal issues. Pieces such as this are made in the lost wax process. Where a mold is put over a wax original, the wax burned out, and the void replaced with molten metal. Each piece is unique. Work has a nice patina to it and is in excellent condition. As a sculptor and jeweler. I am a big fan of" Renaissance Wax” Developed and used by the British Museum to protect items in their collections. I put a very light coat of the wax on this piece for protection of the patina and bronze. Watch for the other wonderful bronze works I bought and will list. gsrx_vers_566(GS 6.7.1(566) Di,RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d72f%2Bishhov%3C%3Edi-146acac4730-0x108-
African Lulua Senufo Cast Bronze Mask Sculpture Cote D'Ivoire Ghana Mali Congo
Up for sale is one of several african bronze pieces I will be making available for sale. An update to this auction: I believe I have identified this mask as having come from either the Lulua or Senufo tribes. The Lulua tribe is a general term for the various tribes that live along the Lulua River in the Democratic Republic of Congo including the Bashilange. Bena Luluwa, Bena Moyo, Luluwa, and Shilange tribes. The Senufo tribe is native to Burkina Faso, Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana, and Mali. This is a bronze mask sculpture which I am listing as being of benin style. However I am not entirely sure if it is indeed of benin style. This piece looks to have been cast in several pieces. This piece really looks to have been repaired several times over the years. One of the decorative circular pieces on the cheek is missing from what looks to be in one ... moreof the areas that was repaired. There is a lot of wear and tear to this mask, with bends and some loss. When you hold it up to the light, there are small holes in various areas. This piece does have a nice patina, and mostly from what looks to be all the repairs made to the mask my estimate would be that this piece was made sometime during the 19th century, though I may be off in that estimate. Given the amount of wear, construction, and repairs it is really an intrigueing piece. When held up to the light, there are 5 small holes in the snout/bridge of the nose and there is a scratch on the inside of one of the horns. Across the back the mask measures approximately 8" by 4.5" at the widest points. Please note that I am not an expert on African antiquities and would welcome additional information on this piece. This piece came from Opfer's auction in Baltimore Maryland and was part of the same collection that appeared in their March 27 sale on Liveauctioneers(this piece was not sold during that sale. It came from a subsequent sale) This was from a living estate and the gentleman whose collection this and the other pieces I will be listing came from apparently work

Elders, heads of lineages or leaders of the men’s and women’s secret societies known as Poro or Sandogo or the women’s funerary society known as Tyekpa carried canes such as this that reflected their social and ritual status. This extraordinary cane from the Senufo people has human and animal figures composed of a copper-alloy most likely cast onto a central shaft made of forged iron. The copper alloy is used to form the two heads on the shaft of the cane the upper head a male while the lower head is probably a female based upon her hairstyle. Two birds facing each other lower down on the shaft with birds playing a prominent role within Senufo mythology. Another male face is prominently placed at the top of the cane on the rounded pommel-like knob on the end of the handle. Surmounting the cane are two birds with rounded outstretched wings. The male-female pairing may represent founding ancestors or beings identified in Senufo creation myths or the spiritual heads of the secret societies so prominent among the Senufo in the past. This male-female couple could well represent the principles of fertility and continuity so important

The Senufo follow a strict caste-like system. In Which the farmer is at the top and the musicians are on the bottom tion of the society. One of the great honors for a Senefou male is to become the sambali, or champion cultivator. The sambali is respected ... moreThroughout the region and in his old age is givenName predominantly leadership roles. Another society for Senefou males is the poro. The poro is Usually located in the forest and serves as a school for young men Until They reach adulthood. Much sculptured work is made in the poro this is where much of the wood carvings, brass sculptures, and masks are made. Sometimes thesis are sold to local artisans. The greatest achievement for a woman Senefou is the ability to cook well. If a girl or woman can not cook well it is a great shame to the family, Especially the mother. These figures, 28 inches in height, have all the hallmarks of classic Senufo sculpture in terms of details and ... morethe fact of the obvious age. They are in fact both beautifully carved figures reflecting the skill and aesthetic sensibilities of the Senufo carver/ artist. The male is wearing a colonial hat and the female has an elaborate hairstyle. They are both shown wearing bracelets on arms. Both figures are mounted on bases specifically made for them. hat is particular to this pair is that they are painted in red and are wearing a carved cache-sexe. Each of them stand on a round base. They look more colonial rather than in more traditional look. Male and female figures are present during different ceremonies among the Senufo and unless one knows the specific context of the figure it is often difficult to name the figure. This finely carved pair most probably had been commissioned by the male ‘Poro or Pondo Society’ that was concerned with initiations. Local social control and funerals of it’s members. Among the Senufo funerals are highly structured as a complex set of funerary rituals and public ceremonies that not only use art but in themselves are art forms. OLD SENUFO KPELIE MASK WITH HORNBILL, COTE D'IVOIRE, AFRICA height: 16 inches
OLD SENUFO KPELIE MASK WITH HORNBILL Very old KPELIE carved mask from Cote d'Ivoire. West Africa with a hornbill on top, which is a symbol of smithing. The hornbill is one of the first creature on earth and is an important symbol, according to the Senufo people. The Senufo Kpelie mask is used in the Poro Society initiation ritual for boys and other male persons, and the Kpelie is the ancestor spirit. The Kpelie mask is owned and worn by males. This mask is sixteen inches tall, six inches wide; it is a little larger than most Kpelie masks. It is also heavier and rather crudely, not delicately, carved. The old tag which is attached by string to the back reads: Senufo.Ivory Coast.Kpelie Mask.with Kono bird. This mask has a projecting mouth with delineated teeth, and the two projections hanging down by the chin are supposed to be feet that ... moreconnect the spirit to the earth, but they also might represent ear lobes hanging down. The eyes are slits. There is scarification on the cheeks. The wood used for this mask is dense. Condition is excellent. Auction payments must be received within two(2) days of winning. Lot of three Senufo Traditionnal Mali Masks Wood Carved African Art, ESTATE SALE
Senufo Masks. Lot of 3) Senufo masks are created by specialist artists who live apart from the rest of their village. Senufo masks combine features of animals and humans in a single design. The Senufo artists have a high status in their society as their masks and sculptures are believed to have the power to help communication between the living and their dead ancestors. Senufo masks are used in the rites of the Park society. A male organization that educates young men in their traditions and responsibilities necessary for their coming of age. The Senufo worship their ancestors. Particularly the Kolotyolo"The Ancient Mother" who holds so much power that she must be approached carefully, and through intervention from lesser gods. The Senufo are a farming people of over a million that stretch across various bordering countries in West ... moreAfrica including the Ivory Coast. Ghana, Burkina Faso and South Mali. I attended one of the biggest estate sales in Scottsdale AZ that I have ever even seen! These gems were in the back guest house that doubled as an art studio. These three were tucked away I n a corner hutch with dust so thick. You couldn't make out the contents of the display case! Needless to say, I had to have them. In speaking with a friend of the family. Who owns a true antique parlor, advised me that she recognized this particular style of mask from vacations earlier in life. We reviewed HUNDREDS of photos of different masks. These HANDS DOWN are one of a kind as far as we can tell. The vibrant color, she said, are indicative of a high official or a holy and private ceremony. We couldn't find any nearly as colorful, nor detailed. She feels like the retail value of each individual piece is more than 350 each because of their rarity. I'm selling as a lot because I feel they need to be kept together. There is a certain magic feeling in my house now and while I would be sad to feel that go. I welcome the gift to a new household. These are in great condition considering there were estimated to b
