This elongated bronze alloy canoe depicts figures relating to the story of the Dogon genesis in African tribal art. It illustrates the story of the mythical ... moreDogon ark led by Nommo and sent by the creator god Amma to populate and reorganize the earth. The crocodile-shaped creature that forms the bowand stern represents ayo geu , a crocodile that killed Nommo. The seven figures seated in the boat are the original Dogon ancestors, who are frequently found on other sculpted works of African Dogon art, such as attic doors. The sides are decorated with motifs depicting snakes, another element of the bestiary linked to mythology. Traditionally danced by men. While playing the character of a woman, the Senufo kpelie mask is a well known art form among the Senufo tribe, characterized by its various perimeter projections, and humanoid features. Their various projections and strange appearance are said to represent the inherent imperfection in humans and humanity. Although this ethnic group spans across a number of African countries, I believe this piece is from the Côte d'Ivoire(aka Ivory Coast) The mask measures approximately 13” long(sans raffia) x 6 1/4" wide. One of the projections has a minor chip on it and another has a minor crack. Having said this though, the mask is in great condition with a large amount of pigmentation still present. A mane of raffia fiber surrounds the mask, and its perimeter is decorated with cowrie shells, widely recognized in West African cultures as a sign of prosperity. I will start the bidding off at $35.00. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river. She sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Iv. between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism. Great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society. The Baule compact villages are divided into wards, or quarters, and subdivided into family compounds of rectangular dwellings arranged around a courtyard; the compounds are usually aligned on either side of the main village street. ed African mask from Igbo. It was carried balanced on top of the head and held in place by bands of native woven cloth held in the dancer’s hands or tightly held by the legs. Ironworking was introduced by the Phoenicians around 800 BCE, and spread gradually across the continent: south into the Sudan and the Kingdom of Axum, then west to the Nok civilization and along the Atlantic coast. The metal was used to produce weapons, tools, amulets and other magical objects, and blacksmiths came to occupy a special position in society: respected ... moreand feared for their powers of metamorphosis. To this day, many West Africans will not look a blacksmith directly in the eye. Iron was not the only metal manipulated and shaped by the skilled hands of African metalworkers. The Ashanti kingdom in present-day Ghana was famous for its abundant gold reserves. And the Ashanti people crowned their king on a sacred golden stool said to have floated down from the heavens. The nomadic Tuareg traversing the Sahara region specialized in silver jewelry like the Agadez cross pendants which were passed down from father to son with the words, “I give you the four corners of the world, because one cannot know where one will die.” In Ethiopia, triangular or crescent-shaped telsum amulets, mergaf pendants with their dangling conical bells, Coptic crosses, and strands of hollow prayer beads were all crafted in silver. A spectacular range of brass beads and pendants were(and continue to be) produced across the continent. Most notably in the form of Yoruba raised dot beads made from gilded brass, the small anvil-shaped pendants known as"Igbo bugs" popular among the Fulani, and the intricately decorated tubular beads worn in t

African tribal Senufo furniture stool ethnographic art sculpture Camaroon 3 leg
This exceptional stool came from the Senufo of Cote d'Ivoire and Mali. The Senufo produce a rich variety of sculpture mainly associated with the Poro society. The sculptors and metal smiths live on their own in a separate part of the village. the attitude shown toward these men by other Senufo is a mixture of fear and respect owing to their privileged relationship with the natural forces that they are capable of channeling in a sculpture. This delightful stool is one example of their superior carving skills. This stool has a personality that is rare for a stool! The detail is fine and the patina beautiful! It is also interesting that the diviners in the Senufo tribe are female. This three legged stool measures 22" long 13" high(including the head) and 5.5" wide. A wonderful addition to any collection!

The jutting breasts and the scarification in places indicate the figure represents a mature female. Among the Senufo of the Ivory Coast art plays a prominent role in their ceremonial and ritual life. Male or female figures such as this were used during Sando divination to carry messages to the spirit world. The diviner. Most often a woman, would cast a set of cowry shells and interpret them. She would then repeat the message to the small figures known as Tu’ule so they could carry it to the spirits and return with an answer for the client. Tui’ule figures such as this are known in a number of local styles and this figure shows long use as there is some softening of features due to much handling. Pigment This bird would have had smaller birds placed on top of it and it would have been placed on top of a staff. These staffs were used in hoe competitions among the Senufo. And also used during funerals as a sign of respect. I definitely believe this object was carved by a Senufo carver. But I don't believe the figure is very old. Ethnic Design Necklace/African,Senufo Bronze Ancestor Pendant/Carnelian Beads
I am listing an ethnic design necklace that I created. Made with a vintage African bronze ancestor pendant by the Senufo people in the Ivory Coast. Pendant is made in the lost wax casting technique, each piece unique and made individually. Pendant is strung with carnelian beads which have a band of white Chalcedoney I think, or maybe etched, and old African bronze beads. The book"Africa Adorned" by Angela Fisher. Copyright 1984 by Harry Abrams) has information and pictures of ancestor pendants like this one, as well as showing a Senufo soothsayer ritual. According to his advice the client will wear specific bronze rings, pendants or amulets.Wearing jewelry in the image of the ancestor is considered to elicit their power and protection and to aid in communication between the living and dead" The book states that most ancestor ... morependants have only two figures, and the four figure one shown is rare, so I image this three figure one is rare as well. I bought the pendant from a dealer who bought it in the 1970's, and who was selling off his collection of older African bronze. Necklace: 19" around; Pendant 2 1/2" W x 2 1/4" L. Please watch my site for other necklaces I will be listing. That I have designed with vintage, Pre-Columbian, gemstone, and trade beads, strung with ethnic and antique pendants, fishing lures, those of my own design and castings, and other funky, fun and interesting things I find on my flea market adventure. The Senufo produce a rich variety of sculptures, mainly associated with the poro society, to which all adult men belong and which maintains the continuity of religious and historical traditions, especially through the cult of the ancestors. Several types of mask are used depending upon the occasion. The kpelie, a human face with projections all around, is said to remind initiates of human imperfection. Danced by men, these masks perform as female characters. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or heddle- pulley which is after all only a functional object for the purpose of weaving seemed to me then and today as beautiful as a Greek goddess. The fetis
