BACKGROUND A central concept in Senufo religion is a female ancestral spirit called ancient mother. The sacred guiding spirit of each poro society. The Senufo produce a rich variety of sculptures, mainly associated with the poro society, to which all adult men belong and which maintains the continuity of religious and historical traditions, especially through the cult of the ancestors. Several types of mask are used depending upon the occasion. The kpelie, a human face with projections all around, is said to remind initiates of human imperfection. In 2009 portions of my collection were exhibited at the University of Maryland's Mosely Gallery- the exhibition was called"Honoring the Ancestors. Only 170 of my 300+ items could fit in the gallery. This mask was exhibited in that exhibition. I have included photos of that installation as well as other items I am selling or will be selling soon. Janiform(meaning 2-faced) example would have been worn at Poro ceremonies including funerals and would also have fought sorcery( dee bele) and harmful spirits( nikw’abele) At the top of this helmet is a small cup held by two chameleons. The mask was not complete until magical substances( wah) were placed into this receptacle. Additional Information: A superb piece. With matched four-horned faces on either side, one shared pair of ears, and paired figures on top pulling on the bowl which would have held magical elements. Red and white pigments have been applied over the black, but use has worn them away somewhat. Inner patina suggests wear. This large helmet mask known as"Kopnyungo. meaning literally a funeral head mask is worn by senior members of Poro at funerals of deceased and honored members. Large composite masks danced by the Senufo symbolically incorporate a number of different animal motifs to create an image that is aggressive and powerful. The crocodile mouth at the front of this mask incorporates warthog tusks coming out of the upper jaw represent the uncontrolled forces of the bush. This mask is most probably used by Senufo farmers and when worn the dancer would look out through the opening of the mouth. This is an excellent example of Senufo masks. The most famous probably being the iconic“rhythm pounder” or deble. This rare carving is a well-proportioned. Much smaller statue with naturalistic features, i.e. less abstract than those found on larger pieces associated with this tribe. It has a well-developed. Well-aged dark brown patina turning to a lighter where the grain has been exposed by old breaks and wood losses. A most unusual feature in this carving is the pair of horns rising out of the side of its crested head. The figure’s hands and genitals are missing. I purchased this Senufo figure from an antiques dealer in Bourges. France many years back. NICELY CARVED AFRICAN SENUFO MASK Height: 15” Width: 7¾” Front to Back: 5” This Senufo mask is black with terra cotta highlights. It is a well-carved piece with nice detail. It seems to be hardwood. It has four age cracks. But is structurally sound. There is one break through the head piece(see photos) two cracks on the rim and one coming down from the eyes. Mali and Burkina Faso, the million and a half Senufo tribes-people live principally off the fruits of agriculture and occasionally hunting. They inhabit villages governed by a council of elders, who in turn are led by a chief elected from their number. Tribal cohesion is reinforced through the rituals of the Poro society who initiate and educate the men from the age of seven onwards. Senufo theology is based on Koulotiolo, a powerful god, and Katieleo, a goddess mother, who through the rituals of the Poro society, regenerates the world. The Senufo were among the first tribal artists to be admired by the Western world. Their artistic output has been prolific- statues and masks characterized by realistic features or highly geometric shapes which emphasize rhythm and the opposition between void and full spaces. A vast array of Senufo everyday objects are adorned with figures- heddle pulleys, ointment boxes, doors and pieces of furniture, such as stools, chairs and beds. AUTHENTIC AFRICAN PROBABLY SENUFO ANTHROPOMORPHIC HEDDLE PULLEY from Liberia
I obtained this heddle pulley from Cape Mount region in Liberia. It is a part of a narrow weave loom used extensively in West Africa. The strips of fabric woven on such looms are later stitched together to make garments or blankets. Traditionally the looms have been operated by men. At least in 1980's in Liberia, I have not seen a woman working at a loom. It was also mostly men that were wearing such garments. Women tended to dress in much thinner cotton lappas(wrap around) which were either printed or tie and die batiks. It is perhaps not surprising that most of the decorated heddle pulleys are in female form, even the anthropomorphic motif of a bird on this pulley is unmistakably female(cubist? Dimensions: approx. 9" tall and 4" wide I am not aware of any ritual meaning attributed to the pulleys but almost every activity in ... moretribal life seemed to require some kind of"medicine" to run smoothly. It was the medicine that needed to be"fed" by sacrifice(usually of a fowl) to be effective. The sacrificial fowl was not wasted though but usually ended up in the pot and eaten. Though generally autonomous the villages are joined through a shared men?s secret society known as Poro or Pondo that is responsible for the initiation of young boys and men into different levels of society and to exercise social control and instruct members and initiates in religious wisdom and knowledge of the bush spirits. Among the Senufo funerary ceremonies serve as a primary occasion for the appearance art during different ritual displays. It is during the funerals of senior members of the male Poro society and woman's Tykpe society that masked dancers celebrate the life of the deceased and honor them as new ancestors. There is a dominant motif of long-billed birds attacking turtles in 2 of the panels. The central image features a crocodile. In the bottom box, a horn bill bird stands atop a python. Sculpted birds play an important role in their ritual and ceremonial life and by drawing upon a rich symbolic pool of images the Senufo make art a vital component of their life through a variety of forms and materials. Carved birds served as a major symbol for the menâs secret society known as Poro during initiations and at funerals for senior members. It was carried balanced on top of the head and held in place by bands of native woven cloth held in the dancerâs hands or tightly held by the legs. The bird is a motif well known among the Senufo as a symbol of fertility and an image of one of the five primordial creatures in Senufo creation mythology and a major symbol for initiations as it was called Kasingele. Âthe first ancestorâ or Poropianong, which literally means âmother of the Poro child(initiate)â. It was also called âsejenâ. Âan eagleâ or simply the bird. Senufo Wanyugo/Waniugo Janus(double headed) Firespitter! This mask is called“fire-spitter” because it emits sparks from its mouth at twilight during the ceremonies of the Poro secret society. It represents the chaotic condition of the universe when the gods first created it. According to legend. Not quite certain what animal to make, the gods gave the fire-spitter has the jaws of a crocodile, tusks of a wart hog, and horns of an antelope. The janus(two-faced) versions are more powerful! Red and white pigments have been applied over the black, but use has worn them away somewhat. Inner patina suggests wear. This large helmet mask known as"Kopnyungo. meaning literally âfuneral head maskâ is worn by senior members of Poro at funerals of deceased and honored members. Large composite masks danced by the Senufo symbolically incorporate a number of different animal motifs to create an image that is aggressive and powerful. The crocodile mouth at the front of this mask incorporates warthog tusks coming out of the upper jaw represent the uncontrolled forces of the bush. This mask is most probably used by Senufo farmers and when worn the dancer would look out through the opening of the mouth. This is an excellent example of Senufo masks. It would stand out in any collection. The mask comes from the collection of an African man. You are buying a rare antique hand carved African Senufo Mask. It measures 24" tall by 7" wide and is 4" deep. It has a dark wood with semi sheen finish. It is in good condition for age with light nicks and wear from age and use. It has four holes on side and looks as though it may have been worn in the past. It has an age crack on side with grain. Not noticeable as it is covered by horns and bird. It is vary light and dry to touch and I would estimate its age to be early 1900's but could be older.
