The carved animal in the centre supporting the stool may make reference to a Pende imagery and symbolism. Caryatid stools like this rarely available on the market will hold a prominent place in a serious collection of African sculpture. There is a double pleasure here for it will not only be pleasing look at but can be sat upon! Though the Pende are divided into two geographically distinct groups. With considerable artistic differences, they still consider themselves one people and are both well-known for their initiation and circumcision masks. You are bidding on an Original REAL OLD PENDE PEOPLE Carved Wood Statue of a Kneeling Male Figure. From Congo. The Pende carve numerous types of masks. Most of which are associated with education and initiation rituals. In the northwest part of the territory wooden figures are sculpted. Carved stools, staffs, chairs, and swords are used by chiefs and other important people to signify their power. The Pende. Along with their neighbors the Yaka and Suku, can trace their origins to modern day Angola, between the Atlantic Coast and the Kwanza(Cuanza) River. They were forced north to their current region during the Lunda expansion in 1620, which also resulted in numerous cultural influences. They are divided into two major groups, a western group who live just to the east of the Yaka and an eastern group who live on the western bank of the Kasai ... moreRiver. Although each group is culturally distinct they consider themselves as one people. The Chokwe expansion around 1885 engulfed most of the eastern Pende and some of the western group as well. Colonialism halted the expansion of the Chokwe and allowed the Pende to reclaim their independence. The ancestors(mvumbi) are placated through various rituals and offerings. The family head is responsible for taking care of the shrines and appeasing the spirits. The Pende recognize that spirits may be either good or bad. Depending on the manner in which they died. Also, when ancestors are neglected they will cause bad things to happen to the family. The result may be sickness or hardship, both of which require a visit to the local diviner to determine the best way to appease the spirits. Through the diviner, the spirit will sometimes demand that a wooden sculpture be commissioned so that offerings can be made to it. This came with a bunch of Pende(Congo) tribal masks that I recently purchased and currently have listed. Combination of wood. Raffia and textile(similar to burlap) but I have NO IDEA what it is. Looks like a small piece may have broken off(see 2nd photo) Please see pictures, maybe someone out there knows what it is. Pende Mask Carved Wood African Bapende Congo
Pende Mask from the Congo. 10" long, 7" across at the widest point. The forehead sticks out about 3" from the wall. There are holes around the inside edge that can be used to hang it on the wall. It is carved from a very light-weight wood. I am not sure of the exact age of this mask. It has scratches. Nicks and scrapes on the surface of the wood that add to its interesting appearance. These features belong to the Eastern group of the Pende where this mask is from. It is within this group that such masks are found. The name of this mask. Ngolo, comes from the Pende word for strength or lifeblood in reference to the young initiates who during and after the rites of initiation and circumcision, Mukhanda, should demonstrate(physical) endurance and strength. Miniature Medicinal or Palm Wine Cup. Pende Zaire/DROC The Pende people's love of ornament is applied particularly in cups. Goblets and small boxes. The cups could be of any shape, sometimes a traditional symbolic design. Some designs were so impractical that they are thought to be rare examples in African art of objects made purely for their decorative appeal. This small cup may have been used for drinking palm wine; but may have also been used for medicinal and/or ritual purposes. The cups for palm wine were usually bigger. Beautiful antique Central Pende Muyombo Mask (Gabama) Congo Zaire /DRC
This is beautiful antique Muyombo mask from the Central Pende. The Pende is a large tribe spread over Southern DRC. Although typically classified into two main groups(Western and Easter) At least four subgroups are known, with great variations in styles: Western, Central, Kwilu and Eastern Pende. Each of them produced an extraordinary array of masks. Some of which were destined to initiation rites, while others were danced in villages upon a series of social events. As often in traditional tribal sculpture. Pende masks are highly symbolistic and can serve different purposes, depending on the occasion. The piece here is known as Muyombo. It shows a flat face with a large forehead, fixed eyes with large eyelids, a square nose and triangular mouth. The appendix below the chin. This mask belongs to the category of minganji masks found among both Pende: western and eastern Pende, and even among the central Pende. The Pende are known for their artistic forms ranging from house decorations. Figural sculptures, numerous carved ivory pendants, and a wide variety of masks. The mask with goggled eyes resemble the mask called Gitenga masks known to be part of a larger grouping that dances during mukanda initiations and circumcisions of young boys to represent the perseverance that the boys must demonstrate during this initiation. Gitenga mask dance with other masks made out of grass fibers that also have large protruding eyes. As the group dances it represents to the viewers ideas of the difficulties of life, chance and death. It was collected by uncle who has passed away. so i won't be able to tell much about it. Its 12 cm high. I do not know exact use of it but i heard that it was used by the pende people to communicate with their ancestors or it gave them powers.

An old African Congolese Pende Ikoko miniature mask pendant. Beautifully carved from cow bone, circa 1900- 1920. The carving is highlighted with black pigment and it has holes for suspension. It is undamaged, though there are good signs of age and wear, with a surface smoothed by years of use. It measures about 2.75 by 1.25 inches(7 by 3.5 cm. The photos can be enlarged for more detail. The mask is icalled"pumbu a mfunu" and would have been owned by a chief. Today masks of this type and a number of others are used mainly for the decoration of the chief's hut, but they are still danced on rare occasions. When danced, the mask expressed the power and authority of the chief. Geometric designs filled with colorful pigments reflected the chief's prestige, and the classic, google-eyed Eastern Pende gaze portrayed anger and was meant to scare. A raffia fringe would have framed the perimeter and hid the dancer's identity, adding to the power of the performance. The Pende, like most of the art-producing cultures from the western Congo, have a rich artisitic tradition and have produced many masterpieces found in galleries and museums. They are perhaps best known for their"mbuya" initiation masks, and the exquisite little ivory masquettes known as"ikhoko" given to newly initiated boys, which are worn and treasured for life.
