A very old drum from the Tet Tep people who live in the Finisterre Mountain range. Which is in the very remote border area between Madang and Morobe Province. Great patina. E specially on the han dle. And remn a nts of trade paint in a couple of places. In this super remote area trade paint was often bought in an eggcup volume, in a cashless societ y. So it was a symbol of wea lth and status. The skin is missing and there is a small chip and crac k where the handle meets the drum. Here is an interesting old piece of tribal art! This is a piece that we rescued out of a dumpster a few years ago when a couple in their 90's moved from their home into an assisted living facility. The couple had traveled extensively back in the 1930s and 40s and we feel that this is probably something that they picked up on their travels during that time. Our research indicates that this piece was made by the master carvers in the middle Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. He stands an impressive 39" tall and is made of one solid piece of wood. His eyes are made of shells. And on the"hook" part are white stones or shells. Although he's a bit dusty looking. He has no cracks, mildew, or repairs.
