For sale is a hand carved wooden tribal mask from Papua New Guinea. I am not sure of it's age. But from a couple others I have found I would estimate it dating from the 60's or 70's. It measures 14 5/8" tall by about 3 1/2" wide. It has inset cowrie shell eyes. Shipping: I use the Shipping Calculator in eBay to get the most accurate shipping charges I can. Old Wood Carved Mask Papua New Guinea Lower Sepik Murik Lakes Dead Can Dance
Here is an Old Carved Wood Mask from the Lower Sepik River Murik Lakes Region of Papua New Guinea. This is an intriguing mask. Representing traditional spirit and ceremonial dance aspects, in this hand carved piece. The mask is in good condition, though there are a few small areas where the wood is chipped, lost or show a slight crack, but they are all fairly minor. There is one area on the back of the mask that appears to've been gnawed away by some critter in the distant past, as is shown in one of the photos. It is not noticeable when viewed from the front, and really just adds to the interesting"story" of its past. Overall, this mask is in remarkably good shape and the impressive design of this beautifully crafted mask is one of the best I've seen. It reminds me of the image seen on the Australian music band"Dead ... moreCan Dance" t-shirt. and displays a very powerful presence when exhibited. A New Guinea ancestral spirit ceremonial mask from Papua New Guinea. East Sepik Province, Angriman Village, collected in 1985. This mask is a striking example of New Guinea tribal art. It was made by a carver who had changed villages, so it is atypical of the usual Angriman cerimonial pieces and is unique in it's style. The mask is in very good condition, the grass decoration is delicate from age. Please see photos for details. Materials are wood, paint, grass fibers, and cord. This mask is in pristine condition given its age(from the 1960s) and measures 7.5in tall, 3.5in wide, and 2in deep. It has intricate designs, which are associated with specific tribes, carved into the wood. Cowrie shells are used for eyes. It comes from a pet-free, smoke-free home. Papua New Guinea: 9.5" Tall, black Hook Mask
Hook Mask approximately 9.5" in length and 4.5" wide at widest point. My parents purchased this whilst teaching in Popondetta. PNG between 1970 and 1973/4. These were used by the tribesman to hang bilum bags. Filled with food, off the floor so rats could not reach them. It is handcarved and has no damage to it. it is a fabulous example of the intricate work the tribesmen partake in. It can be wall mounted but does not come with the metal hook to do so. Additional photos can be emailed if required. Buyer can collect or it can be mailed anywhere in the world and it will be well packaged with loads of bubble wrap etc. Postage quoted is to mainland UK and NI only but can provide costings for more far flung places! Papua New Guinea: 14" natural pigment painted Hook Mask
Hook Mask approximately 14" in length and 4" wide at widest point. My parents purchased this whilst teaching in Popondetta. PNG between 1970 and 1973/4. It is handcarved and has no damage to it. it is hand painted using natural pigments from clay and ash. Due to it's age. There are a few very small patches where the'paint' has come away. it is a fabulous example of the intricate work the tribesmen partake in.
