Stunning Papua New Guinea Carved Wood Tribal 3D effect Wall Mask Early 1960s
Simply awesome tribal wood mask from the early 1960s. Purchased by my parents during a trip they took to New Guinea. New Zealand, and Australia prior to 1964. We lived overseas at the time(Marshall Islands) Therefore. This mask has been in my family for 50+ years. It is made from a hard wood with very intricate carvings. The ears. Nose, and the forehead are so well done. It is breathtaking. See photos because they can explain the mask better than I ever could. Measurements: 12" height x 6-1/2" wide. The longest bone piece going through the nose measures 7-1/2" long. I believe that the nose piercings are made of boar bone. However. I am not an oceanic tribal art expert so it is a guess on my part. The long piece is removeable as you see in the photos. The other two pieces move separately from each other, but I am not going to ... moretake them out or anything. There appears to be some type of resin that was applied to the wood. I'm not sure about this. Is it something the tribal artist used to protect the wood? Wish I knew more about it. I inherited this mask. And it will be hard to say goodbye to him. So handsome. A little dusty from being in storage. I will not touch it with any cleaning materials because I do not want to harm it since it is an unusual. Vintage piece of art. The Abelam and neighboring peoples of the Prince Alexander Mountains in the Sepik region of northeast New Guinea create several types of basketry masks. They include the type seen here. Known in the Abelam language as baba tagwa, which is worn over the head like a helmet, as well as tje yam masks used to decorate the gigantic long yams grown and exchanged competitively by Abelam men. Among the Abelam, baba tagwa masks are associated ... morewith the male initiation cycle, in which they are worn by men clad in shaggy costumes made from strips of leaves. During certain ceremonies, these imposing masked figures serve as guards. Brandishing lengths of bamboo or other weapons, the baba tagwa drive off women, children, and uninitiated men, who are not permitted to witness the secret initiation rites. From: Yam masks and Baba masks: ritual masks from Papua New-Guinea The Abelam people(app. 40.000 souls) live on the forested plains in northern Papua New Guinea. They link spiritual well-being and material survival in one cosmology. Which focuses in part on their staple vegetable crop: yams. At harvest they decorate large yams which can grow to two and three metres long. The decorated yams are displayed publicly and are exchanged between men. When decorated. The yams represent ancestral spirits called Nggwal. Nggwal spirits do not act by themselves. But must be encouraged with offerings, chants and decorations.
