The stone is a dark spinach green- this color is often associated with jade imported from Germany into New Zealand in the 1800's. Fine 19C Coconut Ladle Dipper Sailor Folk Primitive Art Americana Indo Oceanic
Up for offer is what looks to be an authentic 1800s/ 19th century sailor's primitive folk art ladle(laddle) or dipper featuring a coconut shell with metal fastener and a nicely turned wood handler. Not sure if this is early maritime Americana or perhaps Indo-Pacific or even European in origin. Very similar to the painted-version(the last photo) that sold online for $600- minus of course my example having no painted details. Thru the 1700's onward. Coconuts were imported to Europe as well as America. The shells were oftens used for scrimshaw carving and utilitarian items like this dipper. Some were elaborately painted or carved or included bone or tusk-derived material or exotic woods and other materials including silver or pewter mounts. I'm not sure of what kind of wood was used for the handle but the metal-mounts seem to be ... morepewter. A few fine cracks but still very stable and expected with age. Shipping will be $22 to the US and more to an international destination.

Great unique original carving with mother of pearl inlays collected direct in the remote Trobiand islands. For more information on this piece scroll down for details In these islands which are rarely visited. Outside influence is at a minimum. The extremely skilled carvers inspire themselves from what is around them as they have access to nothing else: the natives, birds, fish, pigs, marine turtles, snakes and whatever they see in their dreams such as dragons or mystical figures. Very Rare item: Oceanic Art Melanesia Massim Kula Trobriand hand carved wood(with many inlays of mother of pearl) Crocodile alligator intense carving S ign of power and strength. ... moreThis is a beautiful completely hand carved hand crafted Melanesian(remote Massim region) piece seen on all photos from the isolated. Beautifully carved by a local master carver with rudimentary tools. We show pictures of people and yam houses we took when we go there, and other examples of Trobriand hand carved art on the following photos, also available and that we will be listing regularly when we have time. Amazingly perfect considering the basic tools used such as pieces of broken shells. Rusted nails from shipwrecks found on the beaches, and sea ray, shark skin or an animal horn or tusk rubbed for days against the surface till all is smooth, among other sanding materials, and to produce a sheen on the wood. It is very hard to come across such collectables unless you go there. Some of these items have very important meanings as they are used as part of the Kula ring trade system that has existed between the islands for centuries. The Kula ring is a system of exchange involving annual inter-island visits between trading partners who exchange highly valued shell ornaments and other things during year long sea travels. Terrific value for a very rare hand crafted item: 2A6 seen up to photo 9 included. From the remote Massim region. Melanesia, a detailed hand carved(with amazing traditional detail and hand inlaid with mother of pearl) dish or bowl, seen on all the pictures and created out of a solid piece of kwila wood, also decorated with inserts of mother of pearl and typical incised Trobriand designs. 7 3/4" long. 5 1/2" wide& 2" high. and number 2A6 in our inventory. We have reduced all our rare Melanesian bowls to less than 1/2 for quick sales. This one was already on sale and we reduced it more when listing it here. This is a beautiful completely hand carved(hand crafted) out of one piece of precious wood Melanesian(remote Massim region) bowl seen on photo 1 and following photos. With hand incised motifs on border and adorned with ... moreinserts of mother of pearl all around, beautifully carved by a local master carver considering the basic rudimentary tools used by the natives such as pieces of broken shells, rusted nails from shipwrecks found on the beaches, and for a final polish: sea ray or shark skin or an animal horn or tusk rubbed for days against the surface till all is smooth(among other sanding materials) And the wood has obtained a polished sheen.
