Melanesia Hand carved Rare Oceanic Art Kwila Trobriand Mother Pearl Bowl 2A16
Terrific value for a very rare hand crafted item: 2A16 seen up to photo 7 included. From the remote Massim region. Melanesia, a detailed hand carved(with amazing traditional detail and hand inlaid with mother of pearl) dish or bowl, seen on all the pictures and created out of a solid piece of kwila wood, also decorated with inserts of mother of pearl and typical incised Trobriand designs. 4" diameter. 1 3/4" high. and number 2A16 in our inventory. We have reduced all our rare Melanesian bowls to less than 1/2 for quick sales. This one was already on sale and we reduced it more when listing it here. This is a beautiful completely hand carved(hand crafted) out of one piece of precious wood Melanesian(remote Massim region) bowl seen on photo 1 and following photos. With hand incised motifs on border and adorned with inserts of mother ... moreof pearl all around, beautifully carved by a local master carver considering the basic rudimentary tools used by the natives such as pieces of broken shells, rusted nails from shipwrecks found on the beaches, and for a final polish: sea ray or shark skin or an animal horn or tusk rubbed for days against the surface till all is smooth(among other sanding materials) And the wood has obtained a polished sheen. Very rare and hard to come by unless you travel to these far away hard to reach remote islands. The remaining photos are of other pieces created by these isolated tribes and of some of the people and yam houses who live around the Kula ring and that we took when we were there. All our handcrafted or rare collector items come with pages and pages of research. About provenance, with history of the tribes and photos as well, depending on item and whenever possible. These beautiful receptacles are rare items of the Kula ring. We collected them while in the Trobriands which are north of Papua New Guinea and part of the Kula ring trade. We collected many beautiful pieces while in the Trobriands from carvings(created out of kwila. Rosewood and ebony) to costumes, drums and Kula ri

Melanesia Pacific Kula Oceanic art Trobriand Wood Bowl Mother Pearl inserts 2A17
Terrific value for a very rare item. A large Massim(hand carved and hand inlaid with mother of pearl) dish or bowl seen on all the pictures and item 2A17, I believe it is rosewood, also heavily decorated with inserts of mother of pearl and typical incised Trobriand designs: 11 1/2" long, 5 1/2 wide by 2” high. We have reduced all our rare Trobriand bowls to a fraction of retail. This is a completely hand crafted item created out of 1 piece of precious wood. All our handcrafted or rare collector items come with pages and pages of research. About provenance, with history of the tribes and photos as well, depending on item and whenever possible. This is a beautiful completely hand carved hand crafted Melanesian(remote Massim region) bowl seen on photo 1 and following photos. With delicate time consuming hand incised motifs on border and ... moreadorned with inserts of mother of pearl all over, from the isolated Trobriand Islands off the coast of Papua New Guinea, beautifully carved by a local master carver with rudimentary tools. Amazingly beautiful considering the basic tools used such as pieces of broken shells. Masque moustique, mosquitoe mask, oceanic tribal art
The long pointed nose of this"mosquito mask" is in reality a direct reference to a male mythical spirit called parak or brag. The parak spirit is closely involved in the initiation cermonies of the young-men-to-be and in hunting. As such. The parak is thought to reveal the game to the hunter while concealing it from strangers. The original distribution area of this mask type is that of the inland Mambe. The mask form has been found, however, all along the coast from the mouth of the Sepik in the east to Kairiru Island in the west. Mambe people, north coast.
