The people of this region wear similar adornments to those along the Ramu River. This example is constructed from a perfect blend of bush and introduced materials. The nylon string used as the body fo the piece preferred to bush string due to it lasting longer in the elements. And also being coloured saving this process. The shells on the example are old and in perfect condition, with a nice layer of encrusted patina. The piece is flanked by one red and blue glass trade bead, and the two feather attachments are suspended on gold chain, which we think is a lovely touch. Effigy 5.25" X 3" X 2,5" This is a beautiful completely hand carved hand crafted Melanesian(remote Massim region) wood carving of reef bottom fish. with many inserts of circles of mother of pearl these little circles of pearl shell are glued with natural gum glues or sap obtained from trees after an insert is first created to fit them, collected in the isolated Trobriand islands Beautifully carved by a local master carver with rudimentary tools. Vintage Tonga Tapa Cloth - 13ft X 8ft - Oceanic Art - Polynesian
This is a large traditional Kupesi patterened Ngatu tapa bark cloth made from the bark of a mulberry tree. The large cloth displays the Tongan Royal Family coat of arms. The Norfolk Island Palm trees which line the road to the royal palace, and the dove of peace. As pictured this type of Tapa is recorded in Neich and Pendergrast's book Traditional Tapa Textiles of the Pacific where they state"Tongan Tapa with these motifs then became very popular during World War Two, expressing solidarity with Britain. It is obvious to assume that this example is from that era. This is a a very fine, historic and very large Tongan Tapa which measures(13ft x 8ft 8 inch)

Carved wood. 7" o.a Squatting posture with the elbows on the knees and hands drawn to the face. Characteristic stylized features with elongated flattened jaw and tubular nose. The eyes, mouth and lines connecting the arms to the legs all in characteristic lime inlaid hound's tooth relief. While the base and under chin areas of this figure show that it was roughed out with a steel blade, the finish shows shell or coral texture throughout. A masterpiece of hand carving from an artist from a very primitive culture: Melanesia Massim Kula Trobriand hand carved Kwila wood Rock Fish statue. Effigy 12 1/2" long x 6" x 2" high This is a beautiful completely hand carved hand crafted Melanesian(remote Massim region) kwila carving of reef bottom fish. seen on photo 1 to 9 with many inserts of circles of mother of pearl these little circles of pearl shell are glued with natural gum glues or sap obtained from trees after an insert is first created to fit them, collected in the isolated Trobriand islands Beautifully carved by a local master carver with rudimentary tools. We show pictures of people and yam houses we took when we go there. And other examples of Trobriand ... morehand carved art on the following photos, also available and that we will be listing regularely when we have time. Amazingly perfect considering the basic tools used such as pieces of broken shells. Rusted nails from shipwrecks found on the beaches, and sea ray, shark skin or an animal horn or tusk rubbed for days against the surface till all is smooth, among other sanding materials, and to produce a sheen on the wood. It is very hard to come across such collectables unless you go there. These beautiful art pieces are rare items of the Kula ring. We collected them while in the field in these remote rarely visited islands north of Papua New Guinea. We collected many beautiful pieces while in the Trobriands from carvings(created out of kwila. Rosewood and ebony) to costumes, drums and Kula ring exchange items that we list whenever we have time. In these islands which are rarely visited. Outside influence is at a minimum. The extremely skilled carvers inspire themselves from what is around them as they have access to nothing else: the natives, birds, fish, pigs, marine turtles, snakes and whatever they see in their dreams such as dragons or mystical figures. Both a female and a male figure. Tribal handcarving. Hand carved and very large 62" x 14" x 6" seen on pictures up to photo 11 included. On photo 2. You see such a hook ... morein use in a hut along the Sepik river. Collected years ago in Kandigai Village. Upper Sepik region, Papua New Guinea. This suspension large Hook Statue was hand carved to accommodate benevolent spirits. Out of local wood, with eyes of inserted nassa shells and a little skirt of local fiber. He is sticking his tongue out to intimidate evil spirits that would hang around the men's house. Hooks are used along the Sepik as the rest of PNG for both secular and ceremonial purposes. They are suspended in the men´s house and in individual houses to hang valuables or ritual items. They each belonged to individual clans. This one has symbolic meanings because it is both sexes. Other photos are of natives of papua New Guinea. A man's house where such hooks hang, and hook hanging in a house on the sepik that we took while there. Food hooks are used functionally to preserve food: Food goods are hung from the hook in bilums(woven bags) to keep it safe from rats and mice. Suspending food from the food hook discourages vermin.
