With some of the original paint still intact! This piece of folk-art was carved by men of Abelam society of the East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea. In this farming society. Yam growing plays a significant role. The growing of large yams determines that status of individuals, as well as entire villages. The best yams become the focus of a harvest festival, during which ancestral spirits are believed to temporarily inhabit the yams. This wooden mask was attached to a yam, and represented the face of an ancestor. An excellent example of vintage New Guinea tribal art! It is quite large. Measuring over 16 inches from top to bottom, and weighing 2.5 lbs. The face is primitively ... morecarved, with exaggerated eyebrows and a smiling mouth. This piece was collected by my grandfather. Who was living in Sumatra at the time, and traveled to Papua New Guinea in the 1960s. He bought several pieces of tribal art, including masks and figurines. Being offered is a nice old antique Abelam yam mask from Papua New Guinea. This item comes from a collection that was formed in the 1940's so this mask would predate that. The mask is 14" tall and 10" wide at the widest point. Bird face features large yellow eyes with a blue border and red head. The open work feature at the top was white at one time but much of that dye is gone. Blue rim around the top. The mask is tightly woven and is in great condition overall. It measures approx. 11" x 13 1/2" x 3" and is in good condition, minor spider webs in the clay though not structural, mostly along the outside of the clay and along the nose line. This mask was given to the previous owner by the villagers in 1961 when he was working for the government and traveling throughout the region from Tahiti. The cook islands to New Guinea in an official capacity. It is from 1961 or earlier and most likely from the 50's. It is a middle Sepik river gable mask. Pandanus, mud and pigments. It has a center tooth which is interesting. I have been told that masks of this age are worth from $1400 to $10,000. Starts at $10.00 with no reserve. Measures roughly 29 1/2 inches tall. Being offered is a nice old antique yam mask from the Abelam region of Papua New Guinea. This mask comes from a collection formed in the 1940's so it is at least that old. The mask is 11 1/2" wide and 12" tall. The mask is formed of wicker like material in a circular pattern held together with braided vine running completely across the mask. Eyes. Ears, a nose and mouth have been formed abstractly on the mask, the eyes inlaid with cowrie shells. There is remnants of dye on the mask. The outer rim of the mask has small feathers inserted.
