Papua New Guinea clay ceramic mask / amulet from upper sepik river. Pre 1970.
This is a clay ceramic mask/ amulet from the Upper Sepik River. Most likely from the Washkuk or Kwoma tribes of Papua New Guinea. It is approximately 8 inches tall and comes with a simple custom wood and soldered copper wire stand. It was most likely a shamanistic item used ritualistically to promote a bountiful yam harvest. The protrusion behind the face shows ware consistent with being used as a handle. This item was obtained from the family estate of an anthropologist and is not a tourist item. Ceramic items from this culture are very rare and are usually confined to cooking items. Tribal artifacts from this region pre 1970's are regarded as significantly old. Old New Guinea rare Longnose Mask; Papuan Gulf?/Sepik
For sale this very characterfull and rare type of mask with a long nose from New Guinea. I believe this mask is from either the Papuan Gulf or the Blackwater river area. It is composed of rattan. Clay and a hard'booneshield' Remarkable with this combination is that like 80% of the thinner clay and pigment are still in good condition as well as the long(vulnerable) nose and even some feathers suspending from the tip! It comes on the nice stand also from which it can be(easily) taken off. I estimate it at savely 1920's or before. Ah also the original casuarifeather"beard" is still present Condition; very good considering its composition; some clay loss/cracks and some near its mouth secured with(wood-glue. See the 3rd pic. Huge Vintage Sepik River New Guinea Tribal Mask - 40 Inches High
Vintage Sepik River New Guinea Tribal Mask Approximately 40"x14"x8" Purchased in Papua New Guinea in 1971 Sepik River New Guinea mark purchased by my late foreign correspondent father in Papua New Guinea in 1971. I was with him when the purchase was made. But I was 11 years old at the time so I have limited knowledge of the details. It was part of his private collection since its original purchase. It may be much older than that, but I have no way of knowing or authenticating that. It hung on in a prominent position in my parents' non-smoking home for the rest of their lives. Since their passing it has adorned the wall of my(also non-smoking) home office. It's a great piece. In excellent condition, carved from a single tree. The detail is amazing, with large cowrie eyes and shells inlaid and what I've seen referred ... moreto as mine ore colored paint. The raffia fringe is still intact(expect some of it to shed in transit, but it will be very carefully packed) Please see the pictures for details and condition. We're downsizing houses and it's time for someone else to enjoy this beautiful one-of-a-kind piece. It would also be great in the right corporate office. Rare Tribal Body Mask with Beads-African-New Guinea Etc
For your consideration is a tribal body mask. I do not any knowledge in this area and have never sold one. Therefore. I will have to leave it up to the experts to determine the particulars such as origin, age, style, tribe, and the like. I do believe the mask has some age to it. If I had to guess the age I would say 1940s, but I could be off either way. I did some research online, but could not find one with beads which is why I said it was rare in the title. This mask has red and white beads and they do have some age to them. The Bidjogo or Bissagos people are spread across a number of islands close to the coast ... moreof Guinea Bissau in West Africa. It was here in 1460 that a Portuguese visitor noted a number of âwooden idolsâ in place when he arrived in what must be one of the earliest accounts of African Art recorded. The figures referred to by this early visitor may have been the well-known Iran figures that characterize ancestor or earth divinities. This early indication of the use of figures must also be reflected in a parallel masking tradition present though not noted by early visitors. Close to the Guinea coast the Bissagos have through time taken some influences from the mainland but in the main have shaped their own artistic traditions reflecting local initiation and ritual practices that includes the dancing of a number of headpieces representing various animals including cattle or fish that live in the sea around the islands. This is an unfinished. Broken carving that I brought home with me from my trip to Papua New Guinea in 2002. As you can see in the photos, one of the lower prongs is broken off, piece is in otherwise good condition. Unfinished, because it was never painted. Probably one of the more unique carvings I brought home, as it is the only one I have that is two sided like this. Dimensions are 14' x 4" Hand carved by the Chambri, a remote tribe in the lower/middle Sepik region.

Among the Loma people of Liberia who are identified as the Toma in Guinea. The menâs secret society known as Poro is the primary association for the initiation of all males and the means whereby social control is exercised. Powerful leaders of this secret society have badges of office and certain symbols reserved to them to influence initiates. Large version of such masks were worn horizontally on the head and held by the projecting horns. Some of these horizontal masks appeared during initiations of youths into manhood while others were held in the menâs secret Poro Society precinct in the âbushâ where they were kept hidden from the uninitiated. The present piece is a rare example of passport masks attributed to the Loma or Toma. The well-known passports mask come mainly from the Dan. But. A little research suggests that this mask was made in New Guinea. Although I have no definitive knowledge about it. The mask measures 17.5" from top to the bottom of the chin, with the handle adding another 5" in length. At its widest, it is 12.5" across. The beard is made of a grass-like fiber, with the longest strands measuring about 22" Condition of the mask is as pictured— generally good, with the beard loose at the bottom of the chin. Please note that the mask has been drilled with eyelets for hanging; and that the beard fibers are shedding at an alarming rate This is a very commanding and handsome artwork.
