He is quite well endowed which leads us to think that he is a virility or strength statue. His face looks like a long. Large mask with fierce eyes with cowrie shells. He has a raffia beard all along the edges of his face. The top of his mask has a second smaller face with cowrie shell eyes. He has very pointed ears, and a reasonably proportionate body. It's 26.75" long and 10" at its widest(at it's little ears) It has great raised eyebrows and whiskers that are like handles. The eyes have inlaid shells. The edge of the mask as in the 6th photo. Are ribbed. It's painted a great pink, white and black. It's in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or breaks. I purchased this at an estate auction and am uncertain of its age. This is a real deal. Authentic Chambri spirit mask carving from Papua New Guinea. I sourced it when I stayed on the Chambri people's island for a few weeks. Hard to date these pieces, but I was told it was about 30 years old when I got it in 2002. In Chambri culture(middle Sepik) spirit masks are made after the passing of a relative. No two of these masks are exactly the same. This mask was bought directly from a spirit house in the village of Kilimbit.one of three villages on a small lake island that make up the Chambri people, a tribe of around 1,000. This was no paid Sepik boat tour that stopped by a local village store.this mask came from a remote place populated by a very small ethnic group, with whom I had the honor of being their guest for over two weeks. Iatmul Mei Mask - New Guinea 1965-75
This classic mei mask comes from the Iatmul People of New Guinea. It represents a stylised male ancestor and has the typical long nose that terminates at the bottom in a birds head and is decorated with mud shells pigments and tuks. There appears to be a repair to the nose near the septum and also near the bird- I have showed close ups as it looks like an old repair. There is also some loss to shells and the tuks is broken. It was collected by Klaus Pinker a German born architect and actor working in New Guinea from 1965-75. One appendage, a set of Kissi currency and a packet of unknown magical substances on the top between the two horns. The face is concave with a domed forehead. It shows a short nose and two small holes in place of eyes. The mask does not have a mouth. The mask comes most from the Toma or Loma people of Liberia. Among the Loma people of Liberia who are identified as the Toma in Guinea. The male secret society known as Poro is the primary association for the initiation of all males and the means whereby social control is exercised. Powerful leaders of this secret society have badges of office and certain symbols reserved to them to influence initiates.
