Minor cracks and chips. GREBO"Grebo" means"leaping monkey people. a reference to their flight from a former homeland near the Sahara. Their major economic activity is producing palm oil and palm kernels for export. The culture of the Grebo. A little-known ethnic group inhabiting the coastal region of eastern Liberia and the bordering forestlands, was shaped in a considerable degree by their neighbors to the north, the Kran and Dan. Unlike the other people living in Liberia, and Cote D'Ivoire the Grebo are not structured by the Poro society. They are ruled by a chief known as bodio who lives in near total isolation and also assumed the function of grand priest. The Grebo sculpt several types of masks. The masks appeared during rituals reserved for initiates and at the time of festive occasions. When the whole population was able to see them. The war masks designed primarily to terrify, appeared during battles, in the dances beforehand, and at the funerals of warriors. Figures are rare. Their style is closely related to Dan. Vintage/Antique Javanese Wayang Topeng Wood Mask w/Stand- Rare Craftsmanship
I got this mask with two others. Back in 2007-8, I bought them from a second hand dealer of antiques/vintages items on the island of Java in Indonesia, They claimed to have gotten them from a theater group They took such great care in getting them to me that they made a custom handmade wooden box to ship them all in. The stands came with the masks when i bought them FYI. I would love to sell all three of the masks to the same person. If you choose to buy all three, I will take an extra 20% off the total price. I am unsure of the character represented here. A king I believe. Dalem This is my favorite of the three. A lovely shiny golden gilding done. Far as I can tell from the fact that the gold is not tarnishing after all these years is that its true gold-leafing. Which is very expensive and attests to the quality of the masks. Looks to have ... morebeen in a area of higher moisture at some point and has 1-2 ridge-lines on the cheek where it then shrunk. One would expect to see a tiny tongue like leather strap nailed into place inside the mask if this was danced. as the dancers bit onto the masks to secure these. One might also look to see if there was a twine/rubber strap combo if this was more of a festive mask not meant to be danced by the Topeng elite. With both means to secure the mask missing. It makes me ponder their intended use. They seem like they are either"examples" for carvers to follow, or some that were never finalized. That said. Their extremely high craftsmanship make me feel near certain that one of, if not the best, Javanese cravers of the time period made these. They are definitely not tourist trade items. I dont think they are antique yet. Vintage is probably more accurately. Somewhere between 10-20 years old. Wood has been carved to the point of being" super thin" I have never seen a finer example, All the carving lines and paint details are super-fine, Stand is included in the sale. These are exceedingly rare to come across that are in this grade. Stands appear to be a mis-match

This ... moreface mask with its expressionistic sculptural forms and well carved details conveys some of the'body art' so well developed among the Lulua. Among the Lulua, earlier known also as the Bena Lulua, masks are rarely experienced and where known are given short definitions of how they are used such as during the circumcision of young boys or other rites of passage. This lack of information is due in fact that there are simply few masks recorded among the Lulua. This is a rare example of its kind and would be of good addition to any collection. On stand, Africa Additional ... moreInformation: This face wooden mask completed by an impressive headdress decorated with cowrie shells and beads is from the Leele people. The headdress is very similar to those found on some Kuba masks. The Leele(or Lele)live in the confluence of the Sankuru and Kasai Rivers in territory which adjoins the land of the Kuba. They have a number of similarities with the Kuba. And share the same language and history. Their sculpture and utilitarian objects such as cups, containers, pipes and musical instruments, show clear Kuba influence. One of the most popular creations of the Leele artists is the Itumbwa or rubbing oracle. Made in the form of a human or animal, it was used as a divination device. Like the work of Kuba artists, the Itumbwa is covered with geometric patterns. Masks made by the Leele differ somewhat from the Kuba masks. Made of wood. The Leele mask is adorned with red pigment, and the eyes and nose region is covered over with metal plates forming multiple lines of eyebrows. The flat face of the mask is heightened with the addition of a headdress of raffia textile, decorated with cowrie shells and beads. Keloid(linear scarification) is found on some Leele masks. L

Baule art is sophisticated and stylistically diverse. Non-inherited. The sculptor’s profession is the result of a personal choice. The Baule have types of sculpture that none of the other Akan peoples possess. Wooden sculptures and masks allow a closer contact with the supernatural world. Baule statues are usually standing on a base with legs slightly bent, with their hands resting on their abdomen in a gesture of peace, and their elongated necks supporting a face with typically raised scarification and bulging eyes. Damage/Repair, Minor cracks. Chips, and scratches in places, Additional Information: A scarce mask from a little-known people. The Biombo live just to the south of the confluence ... moreof the Lulua and Kasai Rivers. And mingle with both the Kuba and Eastern Pende, who have greatly influenced the appearance of their masks. Reportedly they use their masks during or after circumcision ceremonies. Though this mask shows both Pende and Kuba influence, it has a style all its own, distinct from that of their neighbors. The rectangular mouth even shows elements of the Songye, and is atypical for the Biombo, who normally craft small, pointed, tubular mouths for their masks. The triangular incising, contrasting pigments, and ubiquitous regional features present here have caused many Biombo masks to be misidentified. See Cornet's A SURVEY OF ZAIREAN ART. Collectable / Rare Dan Kpelle Mask on Custom Stand, Liberia / Ivory Coast
FOR SERIOUS COLLECTORS. This auction is for a rare Dan Kpelle mask from Liberia/ Guinea. The mask was obtained through a trade. Previous owner of the mask is a Harvard University professor who obtained the mask back in 1987. The Dan masks were used during initiation ceremonies. These types of masks are made and worn exclusively. By male dancers. Dan masks are unique and only carved by initiated members of the male Poro society. The mask served to protect the young initiate against destructive or evil forces from the time of initiation, till he one day enters the spirit realm. The Dan people classify surroundings into two realms- the village with all inhabitants(human realm) And the forest(bon) spirit realm) where the spirits reign, and wild animals roam freely. The forest is regarded as sacred. And crossing the boundary between the human ... morerealm, and the spirit realm, may only be done by saying a prayer and wearing materials from both worlds. This creates a link between the two realms. The mask depicted above is a perfect example of the materials. Once the male mask dancer dons the mask. He is transformed into a spirit. The mask dancer goes into a deep trance during rituals and brings forth messages of wisdom from his forebears. The messages is inaudible and in uncontrollable utters, a wise man accompany the dancer during the ritual and translates the messages. The messages are often words of great wisdom, prescribing a way of life that will lead to longevity, health and prosperity. This Dan mask measures 10" in height by 6" at width. From base 14" Materials: wood. Aluminum sheeting circling the eyes, unique twisted nail top of mask. COmes with custom wooden base. P LEASE NOTE: PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS OF PURCHASE.
