This is an imposing two faced wooden surmounted by two carved horns and a median hairstyle. Janiform masks are commonly found among the Marka, the Bamana and the Malinke. In all these cultures, such masks are probably related to the N'Tomo initiation masks worn by young boys. Marka masks are usually covered with brass sheet. The present mask is decorated with cowrie shells and covered with a heavy encrusted patina, which tells the mask was receiving sacrificial elements as part of a shrine. Its imposing shape and its worn surface make this piece desirable! The Marka, living in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso are neighbors of the Bamana.
