The Makonde of Tanzania and Mozambique are one of the most prolific art producing peoples in eastern Africa. One of the most prominent of these arts are the life size helmet masks called Lipico which are worn on the top of the head partially covering the face and slightly tipped upward so that the dancer can see. Masks play a prominent role in Makonde life serving to mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycle for boys as they move into manhood. The Lipico masks show a wide range of Makonde life and society as they depict initiates. Villagers, coastal Arabs and colonial officials. Makonde will embellish their masks with human hair and beards, insert pegs for teeth, will whiten the eyes and in a quest for realism often show human deformities. US You don't see these on the market very often with the bark cloth attachment still attached to it. This particular mask is a very classic example of this type of mask. I wish I could say that it is old and has had extensive use. But what I can say about it was that it was definitely made by a Hemba carver who most likely carved masks of this type for traditional use. The patina shows some signs of age and wear. But I don't believe the mask is very old. There is a crack on the front of the mask that has been previously repaired and is stable. The extremely stylized chimpanzee masks are called mwisi gwa so'o a term that alludes to the"spirit-ivested object of the chimpanzee human" that inhabits the mask. The mwisi gwa so'o masqueraders wear a costume of animal skin. Barkcloth and the hair of Colobis monkeys. Their raucous dances. The face is characterized by a bulging forehead. A strong and straight nose, small circular openings in place of eyes, and a pursed mouth, the ears are pierced with twisted brass hoops. Scarification lines are marked on cheeks and forehead. The mask belongs to the category of N'tomo(N'Domo) mask. N'tomo masks serve to protect young boys during their first initiation cycle before circumcision. This style of N'Tomo mask with figure of the head and horns is located to the region of Bougouni in Mali. The number of horns make reference to specific characteristics of males(three. This is an absolutely stunning hand made Igbo crested helmet mask that comes with a stand. This piece is in overall excellent condition with some areas of surface wear. Paint loss, cracks, loss, discoloration, and various other signs of wear as can be seen in the photographs. My estimate would be that this is piece was made sometime in the latter part of the 19th century, however I am not an expert and will let you be the judge of how old the piece is. This is truly an eye catching piece that would look great displayed in any room or make a great addition to any collection. This mask comes from the Chokwe. It belongs to the famous category known as Mwana pwo and had performed during the ceremonies of circumcision and initiation of Young boys. The headdress attached to the mask is well preserved. The face shows typical Chokwe scarification patterns and expression. The smooth surface shows much handling and good age! Indeed, a delightful piece to add to a collection. This mask comes from the Chokwe people who are members of a large culture cluster living today in central Angola. Parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Zambia. This cluster is composed of a number of distinct but related peoples, the most prominent of which are the Chokwe, but the cluster also includes the Lunda, Ovimbundu, Lwena, Luvala, Mbwela, and Imbangala. As a result of the complex interaction of people the region has shared stylistic elements and figural forms based upon shared mythologies and ritual practices. Antique French Carved 19th Cent Angel Wing Satyr Mask Stand Torchiere 57" Table
Up for consideration is a fine Antique 19th Century Torchiere or lamp stand. It stands about 58" inches tall by 22 inches deep by about 16 inches wide. The top measures about 14 inches square. The piece has a hand carved Angel holding a Family Shield Crest with 3 castles Water with a crown above the Crest. The back side of the stand is plain and it's overall design is more or less that of an easel. The piece is heavy well made. Finely carved piece with great form. Above the crown is the mask of a Satyr. The carving is well done extra fine and life like details. The piece dates from about the 1870's or so. There is an age split. Prominent eyebrows, eyes and mouth pierced and relief forms on chin area. This mask demonstrates signs of use and substantial use. It comes from an old collection! This Fang mask comes with its own stand and it would hold a prominent place in a collection. The purity of its forms equals its spiritual identity. In fact. Among the Fang such masks are identified with the Ngil society. Ngil masks were worn during initiations and known for judicial and social control activities in searching out sorcerers, a process that ultimately led to their being banned by the French colonial authorities in 1910. A later development among the Fang was the appearance of a mask known as Ngontangan, the head of the young white girl" referring to early European women missionaries who arrived on the coast during the nineteenth century. The mask may have had ritual or ceremonial meaning in the past exorcizing malevolent sorcerers but appears not to carry significant symbolic weight today. The offered mask is attributed to the Ngbandi athough it comes from an area where a number of different groups living within close proximity to Ubangi-Lualaba Rivers share culture. Language, political and religious structures which influences their arts. The ridge of scarification on the nose is a significant trait in the identification of the masks from this region. The Ngbandi as well as the Ngbaka live in an area bounded by the Ubangi and Lualaba River systems with the Ngombe scattered along the Lualaba River The Ngbaka moved into the area inhabited by the Ngbandi and as a result both groups share sculpture forms and the details of scarification that often leads to some confusion as to the attribution of their masks. The top is decorated with cowrie shells and the bottom or the chin area has a series of brass bells attached to the remain of a costume made out of cotton cloth and vegetal fibers. The face has big downcast eyes. And pointed nose and a very large open mouth. The surface shows traces of use. This mask is identified as Dan mask, but it could come from the Wee or Guere people. Representing a Ge. Who is a spirit, this mask would serve as a visible symbol manifesting power, principles, and as a"spirit of the bush" to maintain social order, initiate the young and punish wrongdoers. Gorgeous BIG African mask made of hand painted wood and straw/grass. This measures approx 29" high sitting on it's stand. The grass almost touches the bottom so I'd estimate it at 28" total if you include the grass. Excellent vintage shape. A few small scuffs and some paint wear on a few high points. Overall very nice.especially the paint! No thin areas of grass.nice and full. There is a crack from the wood drying on the center back of the head. This is on a nice metal stand and is just gorgeous to display. Recently out of a huge estate here in Boise Idaho. Most of the items have been in long term storage. The date on the newspapers some of this stuff is wrapped in dates to the 1950's! I do not know the exact age of this item but I know it's not a modern piece. Antique Late 1800's Ido Period Samurai's Mempo Yoroi Mask On Metal Stand: Very cool antique late 1800's Ido period Samurai's" Mempo Yoroi Mask" on metal stand. The item is in excellent condition for its age. Made of steel it is structurally in great condition shape& detail wise. The major part of the mempo which covers the cheeks& chin portion has heavily rusted from age but does not take away from the appearance at all. Definitely gives it a story to tell. Beneath the brown rust& patina is remnants of the original silver color. The nose portion is made of the same material as the rest of the mask. But has not rusted as much as the rest it. It is original to the time period but it is unknown whether it is original to the mask itself. The entire mempo is very interesting looking with its menacing grimace ... moreand is very strong for its size. The metal stand completes the display& the mempo simply rests on a metal armature, it can easily be removed is you wish to display it otherwise but I think the metal of the stand complements the metal in the nose& offsets the rust very nicely& classy. The use of masks with human figures and other superstructures on top is more common among the Dogon. The figure as well as the facial mask are quite impressive. Satimbe represents Yasigi(or Yasigini. Yasiguini) the sister of the masks, the only woman admitted to the Awa male society. Satimbe represents Yasigini, the sister of the masks, the only woman admitted to the Awa male society. This traditional Satimbe Mask dances during the Dama funeral rites, during the Sigi ceremony organized every sixty years to celebrate the spirits of dead.This is an excellent example of a Satimbe covered with encrusted patina. Its carving is unique, especially the figure on the top. This mask comes from an old collection. It would stand out in any collection. Oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs.
