It belongs to the famous category known as Mwana pwo and had performed during the ceremonies of circumcision and initiation of Young boys. The headdress attached to the mask is well preserved. The face shows typical Chokwe scarificaction patterns and expression. The smooth surface shows much handling and good age! Indeed, a delightful piece to add to a collection1. As stated. This mask comes from the Chokwe people who are members of a large culture cluster living today in central Angola, parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Zambia. The mask is carved ... morein a dense wood. The mask presents a large face with a prominent forehead. A concave face divided into two by a straight nose. The two ears are pointed andeach eye is represented by a square. The mask has no indication of mouth.The face is embellished by incised motifs. A well carved mask showing some age! It would stand out in any collection of African masks. Suruku mask is worn by adult Bamana males during the initiation of young men into adult status. All Bamana males advance through various levels of initiation and secret knowledge and the Kore mask appears for only the most senior of men representing their personal struggle to achieve knowledge and wisdom. The symbolism of this mask identifies it as a suruku mask of the Kore society. Suruku masks are seen as a combination of human and hyena features. Hyenas are thought by the Bamana to represent foolish behavior reflecting an uninformed view of the world. Very much like the young male initiates. We found this interesting little piece among dozens of full-size masks at a collector's estate sale. The miniature mask appears to be a resin casting. Nicely hand finished to look like a wood carving. The mask measures about 2-3/8" long. Displayed on a metal rod above a square black base. The Punu people reside along the upper Ngoumie River pertaining to a tribe known as the Shira. This Punu mask represents the spirit of an ancestor and as well represents the idealized beauty of Punu women. Commonly found throughout western and central Gabon. They are portrayed with their traditional high domed coiffure with two sided braids, protruding lips, arched eyebrows, narrow eyes, closed mouth and diamond shaped scarification marks found on the forehead. Typically they are layered in white Kaolin clay to represent the spirits of dead ancestors during funerals, similarly to the practice of Yoruba Eggungun ritual ceremonies. Antique WW1 German Gas Mask on Metal Display Stand Rare (Ca. 1914) WW2 Vintage
Antique German World War 1 Gas Mask. The mask is in excellent condition for its age. This was made in 1914 in Germany and used during the Great War(WW1) The stand was rigged from an old metal mask stand I modified. Not very professional looking but it does the job; it is held by duct tape. Please note the stand if you choose to use it for the display may need to be re-taped or if you have the skill set welded. The gas mask is made of a canvas or cloth like material. And the original brown color has accumulated some staining. The lenses are in tact as well as the inner metal workings of the goggle. The O2 tank is of course empty and hollow. The tank has accumulated a nice patina. The elastic straps as well are in good condition. The canvas of the mask is somewhat stiff due to age, but still quite pliable. In the pictures the mask is stuffed ... morewith craft paper to hold its shape for the perfect pose on the base. Altogether, this piece is an incredibly important piece of history and makes for a fine addition to any military enthusiast's collection. Elaborate costume still attached! Indeed a mask of high quality with evidence of use and good age. And it has its own stand! This is the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. Such masks were worn during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. According to Hersak(1985: 168) kifwebe masks are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture.
