US You don't see these on the market very often with the bark cloth attachment still attached to it. This particular mask is a very classic example of this type of mask. I wish I could say that it is old and has had extensive use. But what I can say about it was that it was definitely made by a Hemba carver who most likely carved masks of this type for traditional use. The patina shows some signs of age and wear. But I don't believe the mask is very old. There is a crack on the front of the mask that has been previously repaired and is stable. The extremely stylized chimpanzee masks are called mwisi gwa so'o a term that alludes to the"spirit-ivested object of the chimpanzee human" that inhabits the mask. The mwisi gwa so'o masqueraders wear a costume of animal skin. Barkcloth and the hair of Colobis monkeys. Their raucous dances. The mask is carved ... morein a dense wood. The mask presents a large face with a prominent forehead. A concave face divided into two by a straight nose. The two ears are pointed andeach eye is represented by a square. The mask has no indication of mouth.The face is embellished by incised motifs. A well carved mask showing some age! It would stand out in any collection of African masks. Suruku mask is worn by adult Bamana males during the initiation of young men into adult status. All Bamana males advance through various levels of initiation and secret knowledge and the Kore mask appears for only the most senior of men representing their personal struggle to achieve knowledge and wisdom. The symbolism of this mask identifies it as a suruku mask of the Kore society. Suruku masks are seen as a combination of human and hyena features. The red face, however not unheard of, is less common than a more natural shade of stained and polished wood. With minimal damage to the face, while the back shows signs of age and use, this piece is ideal for a collection. Very precisely carved and striking in appearence, this mask would make a great addition to an office or home. The Baule are part of the Akan group of the Ivory Coast. Traditional Baule elements are elaborate hairstyles for women. Braided beards for men, one or both hands on belly, elaborate keloid scarification, almond shaped eyes, serene faces. This beautiful mask probably falls into a special grouping known as portrait masks. These portrait masks are said to portray an honored person of the village or a personal ancestor who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as Mblo. The Wee have been variously known in the past as the Kran in Liberia and the Nguere or Guere in Ivory Coast. Though close in terms of geography and culture to the well-known Dan people in the region they are separated by language(Wee are Kru speakers and the Dan are Mande speakers) Both the Dan and Wee have dynamic masking associations known as Poro that initiate the young and regulate society. Poro is an exclusively restricted menâs society. However masks between the Wee and their Dan neighbors are divided into male and female categories based on their form and details. This mask features a chimpanzee-like face with very angular details including a domed forehead. Triangular pierced eyes, jutting cheeks, and a large nose. The surface presents evidence of use and wear. The rectangular holes around the edge suggest that they were carved by hand instead of drilled, which attests to the talent and care given by the artist. Or exactly what it is made from, it feels like wood but I think it's probably something like paper-mache, or perhaps that is over wood. Stand is wood, painted black. Gold covered with tiny rhinestones on the headdress. I think the face and back decorations are hand painted. I've no idea when it was made. this came from an estate auction containing a large assortment of Asian collectables, art and artifacts. This is the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. Such masks were worn during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. According to Hersak(1985: 168) kifwebe masks are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. This mask has deeply concave eyes with striking white pigment. There are elements of the famed Pumbu chief's mask: tall elongated shape, abstract long nose and curved forehead. This articulately carved helmet mask is a great exapmple of Mende masks. The elaborate hairstyle. Small face, and neck rings all are typical elements of this type of mask and are very well expressed here. The rings on the neck represent healthiness and wealth. Woman with fat are desirable within this society because they are more fertile. Many mende masks have an ornament on top, in this case, a bird. These ornaments can range from horns, to turtles, to snakes, and they each represent something unique about the woman dancing it. This piece is very well carved and has a beutiful patina. Though many works of art have come out of the Atlantic Guinea Coast region of West Africa few have as much prominence as the masks worn by the women of the Sande society of Liberia. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, General wear, Additional Information: This well carved mask completed with a red cloth eye and mouth coverings comes from the Dan people of Liberia. Also known as the Yacuba. The Dan live in politically non-centralized villages and towns ruling themselves through a complex arrangement of family lineages, menâs secret societies, and conjunct initiation ceremonies. Masks among the Dan are generally recognized under the term Ge that would roughly equate to our idea of spirits or supernatural ... morebeings or forces. Most attributed to the forest where the wild spirits live. With its forehead stained with reddish-brown cola nut coloring, red cloth covering the eyes and lips, this striking mask is known as Zakpai Ge and is an active and aggressive mask that serves a number of functions. Itâs primary role is that of a âfirewatchâ mask that insures proper use of cooking fires by women. Accompanied by drums it confronts a woman who has been using fire carelessly or a fire much too large for its purpose. It appears in a very aggressive dance and will throw sticks and things about, knock over the cook pot with their meals into the fire and may even beat the women who set the fire to cook. Not a friendly mask at all. It also in some areas serves as a war mask. When used the mask had a cloth wrap around the outer edge that covered the dancer when wearing the mask, in fact it may have been hooked onto the small at the nail at the top of the mask, The remains of Kola nut staining on the forehead is the result of ritual spitting of the cola nut as a sacrificial offering.
