Leopard's teeth, and human scarification markings painted in red and white, with blue outlines. The designs and colors are rich and lovely. The mask is in very good condition for its age on the front. But does show signs of use, especially where the ropes were tied to the sides and top of the mask to hold it to the dancer's head. The sides are worn down, and the hole on the top that used to hold the ropes around the head is cracked. However, this is normal wear and tear, and adds to its authenticity of a real, used, African object. I purchased the object myself. In this exact condition, in the late 1980s in Ivory Coast. Possibly south-central in an area of mixed people. There is so much to choose from in this area of the Gabon. From Mitsogo, to Fang, Ngom, Pove, Vuvi, Njem, and that doesn't even doubt the smaller groups that are hanging around hoping something will fall from their larger neighbors tables! One can see Vuvi or northern Shira-Punu style, and Tsogho sources in it. We believe it has a lot to do with the TSogho tha with anyother group. The mask presents a large face with a prominent forehead. A concave face divided into two by a straight nose. The two ears are pointed and each eye is represented by a open square. The mask has a largeopen square mouth showing carved teeth on sides. The face is embellished by incised motifs. A superb mask classic Bamana Kore society masks! Suruku mask is worn by adult Bamana males during the initiation of young men into adult status. All Bamana males advance through various levels of initiation and secret knowledge and the Kore mask appears for only the most senior of men representing their personal struggle to achieve knowledge and wisdom. The symbolism of this mask identifies it as a suruku mask of the Kore society. Suruku masks are seen as a combination of human and hyena features. Hyenas are thought by the Bamana to represent foolish behavior reflecting an uninformed view of the world. Very much like the young male initiates. The top shows the remain of the feathers and the surface indicates much handling and good age. The Grebo live in southeast Liberia at the border with the Ivory Coast. With the Bassa people on their west and the Bete and We to their east in the Ivory Coast. Grebo masks are best known for their influence on early western modern art being found in the collection of Picasso who obtained a Grebo mask from his dealer Kahnweiler in Paris. There is no doubt as to the influence of the Grebo style mask upon the development of western art for they are a complete example of geometry in sculpture with the long face, a long nose and tubular projectiles. Little is known about the use of masks among the Grebo other than the fact that they are said to have been worn during wars by leaders as a kind of military costume. An Ibibio Ekpo mask with a hinged jaw and encrusted patina. The oxidized color of the wood indicates that it has a good amount of age. It's got a nice metal custom stand.
