BACKGROUND Inhabiting the southeast of Tanzania and the northeast of Mozambique are the Makonde. Divided into matrilineal clans, each one comprising several villages. They survive economically from farming and occasionally, cattle rearing. Makonde carvers are prolific producers of masks, statues and decorative objects. The most famous are the Lipico masks, which are used to mark a boy’s initiation into adulthood. Lipico is the name that Makonde men give to the masker of their masquerading association, who is brought from the bush into the village for initiation celebrations. The dances are accompanied by an orchestra of drummers. These masks have realistic features and are often decorated with scarification marks. They are carved with light balsa-like wood and are always worn with a cloth. The lip plug suggests that it is intended to represent a woman elder. Helmet mask- Lipiko) Makonde peoples.Tanzania, Mozambique and Kenya The Makonde developed their culture on the Mueda Plateau in Mozambique. Unusually ... morerealistic for traditional African art. This( lipiko) helmet mask possesses portrait-like and strong features. It has incised facial scarifications. Open mouth, bared teeth and large ears. They were used during mapiko dances. Dancers see through the small mouth openings in the mask. The masquerade is also the same name given to one of the stages of male initiation as the initiate is introduced into the secrets of the Mapiko. These masks were made in a secret bush location known as the Mpolo.Which women are forbidden to approach. When not used, the masks were kept within the Mpolo. BACKGROUND Inhabiting the southeast of Tanzania and the northeast of Mozambique are about 500.000 Makonde, divided into matrilineal clans, each one comprising several villages. Clan members meet only for the ancestral cult and to celebrate initiations. The Makonde believe in a world of ancestor spirits and in malevolent spirits who make an appearance during the ceremonies that close initiation rites. According to legend, shortly after the Creation, the first man, wandering around outside the bush, sculpted a female figure out of wood, and the statue became a real woman who gave him many children and, after her death, became the venerated ancestress of the Makonde. This accounts for the ancestress cult as well as the profusion of sculpted female figures, kept in huts. During this intensive months-long ritual, girls and boys were provided with knowledge and skills essential to the Makonde way of life. The Makonde practice of carving protective ancestor figures predates the colonial era. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. "MAKONDE" TREE OF LIFE Ujamaa EBONY Unique Hand Carved Tanzania Moshi 1980's
This is a unique hand carved Makonde"tree of life" Ujamaa style from Moshi. Tanzania made of ebony(ironwood) It was donated to our charity in good condition. It has been displayed in the home and has a little dust in the crevices. Because it has been cut out right from the tree, it does have raw wood edges- but that is truly part of its beauty. This was purchased in Tanzania in the Moshi Province. This is also indicated on the bottom of the carving. This statue has a central figure with four small figures surrounding it. The carving literally feels like metal, because is ironwood. Take a close look at the pictures as it shows the details up close. It is 11 ½ tall& weighs almost 1½ lbs. We will also be putting up several other gorgeous carved pieces including the Big 5 plus a whole lot more.
19” Makonde TANZANIA Many Men UJAMAA Unity CARVED WOOD Tree Of Life TOTEM
This contemporary African sculpture was made in Tanzania in the mid 20th Century. These Ujamaa(means'unity' many men' sculptures began to appear after Tanzania's independence from Great Britain in 1961. As copied from Wikipedia: Ujamaa was the concept that formed the basis of Julius Nyerere's social and economic development policies in Tanzania after it gained independence from Britain in 1961. The term has also come to be used as one of the seven principles of the African-American celebration of Kwanzaa. It has the meaning of"unity" oneness" uniting with your countrymen as one extended family" It is carved from a very heavy wood and has a dark stained and polished finish over which was applied a final red clay wash. It was then polished again to create a final unique effect that accentuates the dimensionality ... moreof the piece. Standing. It measures about 19” high, 4” wide, and weighs about 7.25 lbs. It features a total of 11 male figures carrying loads clinging on and climbing up towards the twelfth– but substantially larger- face. There are so many possible analogies for this sculpture that I wouldn’t know where to start… PLEASE see my EXCELLENT FEEDBACK and BID with CONFIDENCE! If you have ANY questions. Please ask. I'm really easy to get along with and try my best to make every transaction a pleasant experience fo r all involved! I pack VERY well and always TRY to ship QUICKLY. THANK YOU!

The Makonde are one of the most prolific art-producing cultures in East Africa. And their works are known worldwide. Though often identified with their wildly abstract and sensual"shetani" carvings which are produced for sale, they also have a long tradition of ritual art, which includes a wide variety of helmet masks, male and female ancestor figures, and an almost endless variety of utilitarian objects, such as this figural trumpet. There are also the startling female"belly" masks. Masks play a prominent role in Makonde life, and mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycles for boys, as they re-enter society as men, ready to marry. The Makonde are a Bantu-speaking group who moved into northern Mozambique from their original homelands in Tanzania. Near Lake Nyasa. There are still pockets of Makonde living

CHESS SET Makonde AFRICAN TRIBAL Nude COMPLETE 2.25 KING handCARVED WOODEN Vint
Wonderful unique Chess Set! This set is smaller than most that I have seen on ebay. They are so smooth to the touch and have wonderful details. Tribal African figures. I have no idea of the age of this set. But I think it is vintage maybe 80s? All pieces are Hand carved. I don't see any damage except the tip of the one"hut" castle piece. Pawns are women as the Queen with top nudity. It's the perfect side table size. All you need is a board! I tried to find another set like this and couldn't. There were similar ones, but none with the nudity. Most likely made from Ebony and African yellowwood. Because they are hand made the sizes are not perfectly identical but very close. Another ebayer gave me this information on the set: These are made by the Makonde tribe of northern Mozambique and southeast Tanzania. the older sets ... morehave the scars that these people carve into their faces for decoration. Measurements- King 2.5" Queen- 2.5"2-3/8" Rooks 2.5" Horse?Giraffe- 2" Castles- 2.25" they vary the most and one looks to have a little missing top chip) Pawns 1.75" I have a more classic set of chess pieces up for auction. Happy to combine them! That will end a day before this set will. AUTHENTIC AFRICAN TRIBAL ART MAKONDE MASK bought in Kisangani, Zaire in 1986
I bought this mask at a market in Kisangani in Zaire(now renamed Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1986. I was told by the trader(who claimed to be from Tanzania and he did speak English. Everybody else there spoke French or Lingala) that it is a Makonde passport mask. I liked it because of its ferocious expression and it was so much more elaborately carved then any other passport mask I have come across. The pigmentation of this mask is also unusual. This combination of pigments I have only seen on other old Makonde masks. The mask is also larger then most passport masks. It is approx. 9" tall and 5" wide, it weighs approx. 7 ¼ oz. During the time I worked and lived in Liberia I started collecting African art. Both traditional and contemporary, I continued enlarging my collection when, few years later, I returned to work in ... moreAfrica in Zaire. I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. All such items which I am selling now on Ebay were either purchased by me or received as gifts from my coworkers or missionaries I worked with while in Africa. The authenticity of items used in tribal rituals is notoriously difficult to ascertain. The members of the tribe which use the masks in rituals attribute to them magical powers and are highly unlikely to sell them. Most of such items on the market were most likely obtained by theft or luted during a war. I have only one mask that I received directly from the tribe and that was after I was invited by one of my coworkers to witness a funeral ceremony. Tanzania: Rare tribal used old Makonde helm mask with real hair.
Tanzania: Rare tribal used old Makonde helm mask with real hair Hand carved from wood. Height: 28 cm. Africa-Gallery. Makonde Inhabiting the southeast of Tanzania and the northeast of Mozambique are about 500.000 Makonde, divided into matrilineal clans, each one comprising several villages. Decisions are made by a chief supported by a council. Clan members meet only for the ancestral cult and to celebrate initiations. According to legend. Shortly after the Creation, the first man, wandering around outside the bush, sculpted a female figure out of wood, and the statue became a real woman who gave him many children and, after her death, became the venerated ancestress of the Makonde. This accounts for the ancestress cult as well as the profusion of sculpted female figures, kept in huts. In the traditional homelands of the Makonde the primary ... moresource of food comes from slash and burn farming. Crops include maize. Sorghum, and cassava. This is often supplemented by hunting. The precolonial Makonde lived in dispersed settlements. Each settlement was composed of a small number of households headed by men belonging to a matrilineal kinship unit called a likola. A likola was said to derive from a common female ancestor. Revered as a life-giver and protector, who was represented by figurines only a few inches tall. Carved from soft wood, the images were embellished with traditional body decoration: the face and torso had geometrical designs, and the upper lip exhibited the lip-plug worn by Makonde women of the time. People often carried such carvings with them on long journeys. For example, a man going out to hunt might have tied one to his back or hip to protect him from danger. Other carvings served educational purposes. One of the most important events in the life of a Makonde was initiation. During this intensive months-long ritual. Girls and boys were provided with knowledge and skills essential to the Makonde way of life. Carvings sometimes functioned as teaching tools in the context. The most important carving use

Today, they live in various parts of Tanzania, Mozambique and Kenya. Although the Makonde of Tanzania are Muslim and those of Mozambique are either Catholic or Muslim, the society was traditionally matrilineal. This means that husbands had to move to the villages of their wives and the offspring of couples belonged to the mothers. The Makonde are noted for their exceptional wood carvings in African blackwood. Or mpingo. The most notable carving theme is"Tree of Life" or"people poles. These intricate carvings reference ujamaa, brotherhood, cooperation, family, and togetherness, depict a column of intertwined human figures, often appearing as though locked in dance. The idea is that from one block of wood comes the unity of the family, society and ancestors. The older generation is depicted on the bottom, supporting(literally and symbolically) later generations. The central figure is usually a mother surrounded by many clinging children. This theme has its roots in the creation myth of the Makonde, in which a woman

These statues are called the"Tree of Life" because they depict the members of an extended family. Including past and present generations, gently supporting each other, generation after generation. These 3 sculptures were purchased in Tanzania in the early 90's and have been in storage. 2 sculptures measure 11.5 inches and the third measures 10.25 inches. Each carving has been created from a single log of the ebony tree with the bark from the original log still intact. They are dusty and one of the sculptures has an arm that was broken off(it can be seen in the pictures) Aside from that they are beautiful and ready to ship.

Makonde Ceremonial Helmet Mask
I don't know a lot about African art. But will share what I was I told by a dealer friend in the DC area. This is a ceremonial Helmet Mask, which was used in a coming of age type ceremony. It has very exaggerated facial features and has human hair on the front of top. The wood is very light weight and it almost looks like it was burned to give it a dark color. Quite a bit of the color has worn off. There are 7 teeth carved into the mask in a very primitive way. The lips and eyes are very pronounced compared to the chin and the nose, which is a bit flat. There are no holes in the eyes or nose, only the mouth. The hair is patchy, only about 70% of what appears to have been original. There is a superficial hairline crack on the left side around the front of the ear. It does not appear to go through the wood, and is not loose. The mask measures ... more9 1/2" h x 6 1/2" w x 8"d.
