African wooden, portrait mask, Makonde (Bantu) ,antique,
This is an African portrait. Helmet mask of the Makonde tribe. It is made of a light weight wood. This mask was purchased in the early 60's and is believed to be fairly old. There are small remnants of wax and natural fibers around the carve out of its face that were used to affix the hair to it at one point. Very few hair fibers remain, most are on the eyelids. There is a nickel sized hole on the top of its head which was there at the origin of carving(possibly to attach the piece to a spear) there is a large crack running through the hole however. Also, there is another hole on the right side of the temple. There are rubs and nicks on the jaw, eyelids, cheeks, ears, nose, lips and around the head, all are to be expected with a piece this old and made from such a fragile wood. A large square is missing from the front neck. Please inspect ... moreall photos carefully. It is approx. 13 inches from the chin point to the back of the head, 10 inches high and 9 inches from ear to ear. Again, please see photos for all details. Please inspect photos carefully as I try to display all imperfections as clearly as possible. In most cases the photo exaggerates the imperfection but not always. I am not a professional art dealer nor am I proficient in everything regarding African art but I do like to answer questions if I can. If you would like more information on the item or the previous owner please do not hesitate to ask. If you would rate this transaction anything other than four star. Please contact me first and allow me the opportunity to rectify any problem. Your satisfaction is my top priority. All African artifacts and antiques I am selling are priced considerably lower because I am liquidating most of the collection. They have always been left in the condition I received them in from the previous owner. I do not clean. Polish, dust, or repair my items because I like to keep them as close to how they were found in Africa as possible. VERY IMPORTANT! IF THERE IS MORE THAN A TWO DOLLAR DIFFERENCE IN THE ACTUAL SHIPPING AND

Makonde war trophy Mozambique
Eerie and unique head brought from Mozambique by some relatives. Who lived there in the 50s-60s. They already had it for many years, so it may be older than that, but I'm not sure. The head is approximately 20 cms. The mouth is sewn with twine and the eyes have lashes. The experts on the subject will certainly recognize what it is. So I won't go into details. It is a one of kind piece. Very rare. ag6 2.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp73%28c%3Eag6%3E2-147a85ca24f-0x113-
African Art Full Helmet style Makonde Mask
A Makonde helmet mask measures eight by eight and one half by nine inches deep. Measurements approximate. I received this from an African Art collector who was trying to weed his collection to make room for truly old and ritually used pieces. I've had it for about fifteen years but I know nothing of it's history before that. The Makonde live in northern Mozambique which was one of Portugal's few colonies. They have a history of carving and apparently found out that the tourists would buy masks and other carvings. There are a couple others on Ebay now with different facial features but the same pattern of scarification to the face. I'm assuming this was one of those tourist pieces. Which still could mean it's fairly old.An interesting piece for home or office. Please ask any questions or request more pictures before you ... morebid. I do allow a 14 day return for any reason but the buyer is responsible for the postage. I'm fairly new so for now I'm only accepting bids from the United States. This piece is being sold as is without warranty as to age, or identification.

They did not fall under colonial power until the 1920s. During the 1960s the revolution which drove the Portuguese out of Mozambique was launched from the Makonde homeland of the Mueda Plateau. Superb finely carved African wood figure probably Makonde Tanzania ebony
Superb finely carved African wood figure probably Makonde Tanzania ebony I found similar wood carvings on the web and all were attributed to the Makonde wood carvers in Tanzania. They were carved from ebony as I believe this one is. It is small. Measuring 4” tall, 4-1/4” long, and 2-1/2” wide. It still has what I assume is the original price tag of $60. This was obviously carved by a master carver because of all the wonderful detail. I have included many close-up photos so you can see the detail. It is not signed. It is in excellent condition. Please look over my photographs carefully for the best idea of condition– and email me with any questions or if you need more photos. The February 2014 online issue of Safari Magazine provides the following information: Makonde craftsmanship has no equal. The realism and life-like qualities and finely ... morehoned details in the statue and animal carvings are unparalleled; the artistic flair of the more abstract pieces is exquisite. Every detail is carefully and artistically rendered. Yet the beauty of Makonde work truly belies the conditions under which it is produced. It isn't just the work environment. It is the tools as well. These carvers craft their masterpieces with bulky, primitive implements just as their ancestors have done for centuries. Each sculpture is done'free-hand' without the benefit of drawings or pictures as guides. The work is painstaking. A large piece can take upwards of three months to complete. And may require the skills of several carvers before completed. The Makonde are one of five major Bantu tribes in this 362 830 square mile nation. Living relatively isolated on the Makonde Plateau in the southeast. They are among the least culturally affected by colonial and post colonial development. Their reputation for cultural conservatism is perhaps best known through their ebony wood carvings and sculptures. And their work is by far Tanzania's most famous and purest art form. My return policy is: Returns only accepted if I have misrepresented t

Shortly after the Creation, the first man, wandering around outside the bush, sculpted a female figure out of wood, and ... morethe statue became a real woman who gave him many children and, after her death, became the venerated ancestress of the Makonde. This accounts for the ancestress cult as well as the profusion of sculpted female figures, kept in huts. In the traditional homelands of the Makonde the primary source of food comes from slash and burn farming. Crops include maize. Sorghum, and cassava. This is often supplemented by hunting. The precolonial Makonde lived in dispersed settlements. Each settlement was composed of a small number of households headed by men belonging to a matrilineal kinship unit called a likola. A likola was said to derive from a common female ancestor. Revered as a life-giver and protector, who was represented by figurines only a few inches tall. Carved from soft wood, the images were embellished with traditional body decoration: the face and torso had geometrical designs, and the upper lip exhibited the lip-plug worn by Makonde women of the time. People often carried such carvings with them on long journeys. For example, a man going out to hunt might have tied one to his back or hip to protect him from danger. Other carvings served educational purposes. One of the most

Today, they live in various parts of Tanzania, Mozambique and Kenya. Although the Makonde of Tanzania are Muslim and those of Mozambique are either Catholic or Muslim, the society was traditionally matrilineal. This means that husbands had to move to the villages of their wives and the offspring of couples belonged to the mothers. The Makonde are noted for their exceptional wood carvings in African blackwood. Or mpingo. The most notable carving theme is"Tree of Life" or"people poles. These intricate carvings reference ujamaa, brotherhood, cooperation, family, and togetherness, depict a column of intertwined human figures, often appearing as though locked in dance. The idea is that from one block of wood comes the unity of the family, society and ancestors. The older generation is depicted on the bottom, supporting(literally and symbolically) later generations. The central figure is usually a mother surrounded by many clinging children. This theme has its roots in the creation myth of the Makonde, in which a woman was the first human ancestor. African Style Mask in Primitive Style – Makonde of Mozambique / Tanzania Style
Beautifully crafted mask art piece. In what appears to be a primitive or naïve style, done in ceramic. I am told by an expert that this is likely from the Makonde of Mozambique/ Tanzania and appears to date from the mid to late 20th century. To me. This mask is reminiscent of the very old masks and evokes a sense of awe and wonder. The eyes and mouth are cut through(pierced) There are two small holes on the upper and lower portions for hanging. There are some areas of natural wear. As shown on the tip of the nose. There are scaration marks incised into the piece– which appear to be symbolic. The piece measures about 7.5” high x about 8.5” from ear to ear. It has a string attached for hanging. Truly stunning and beautiful piece!

ANTIQUE TERRA COTTA ART MAKONDE MATERNITY FEMALE FETISH TANZANIA EAST AFRICA
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer an Antique Terra Cotta Maternity Fetish Figure from the Makonde people. Tanzania, East Africa. The Makonde are almost the only ethnicity in East Africa to create fairly naturalistic sculptures– primarily maternity figures, or so-called Fetish figures, which are intended to ensure the fertility of the women through apotropaic functions. This extraordinary zoomorphic example is made of terra cotta and measures 4 inches in width by 4.5 inches in depth by 6.25 inches in height(10.16 cm by 11.43 cm by 15.87 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with the late 19th to early 20th century, including small scrapes and cracks that are a normal part of the patina. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a fine collector’s piece for anyone involved in African art. The Makonde ... morepeople are Bantu-speaking people of East Africa that successfully resisted predation by African. Arab, and European slavers and live in southeast Tanzania and northern Mozambique. They did not fall under colonial power until the 1920s. Their society is based on village units with no centralized political authority. They have a matrilineal system of inheritance. The Makonde developed their culture on the Mueda Plateau in Mozambique. On top of the plateau are dense thickets from which the Makonde get their name“thicket-covered plateau” Tradition tells of their descent from the child of a mythical creature, half human, half animal, which never shaved or cut its hair, and tells of his wife whom the mythical creature had carved out of wood and became alive. Makonde art in the form of masks and figurines relate to this myth, especially to the first female ancestors. This accounts for the ancestress cult as well as the profusion of sculpted female Fetish figures. GJPaw Auctions has been in the Art business for over 25 years and is now expanding its operation to eBay. Our goal is to bring the same experience and excitement of collecting that we have been delivering in-person to co

UNIQUE SOLID EBONY HAND CARVED carving Africa African MAKONDE antique tribal art
Lost Treasures of Africa We are proud to offer this solid ebony dark Makonde carving or statue. This amazing sculpted piece has been worked directly from the grain. And is over 100 years old, and a true African antique. The beauty of this particular type of grain is known all over the World. And it is the most highly prized grain available, used especially in carvings, statues and figurines. It is hard. Heavy and dense, amongst the densest of all woods in fact. It is also one of the most expensive grains in the world. And regularly priced above all other African timbers. It is both the real deal and the only deal for most genuine collectors. This village'bust' or head. Shows superb carved detail, and provides intricate facial expression and character. An excellent example of its type. It was carved using a single piece of wood; is ... morejust under 40cm in height and around 25cm in width. Being made of a single piece of timber, it would have been extremely difficult and labour intensive to carve and comes in at approx 5KG in weight. So quite heavy for its size. The Makonde people from whom this carving was derived. Speak ChiMakonde. Their statues are now found in art collections worldwide. This specific example was sourced from a private family collection found in the rural areas south of Dar Es Salaam. And was passed down through at least 6 generations, with dating likely to be around the 1890's. It is an extraordinarily beautiful item originating from a remote mountainous part of Tanzania. An intricate and highly detailed statue. It will become a natural talking point in any room in which it is housed. The successful bidder will not be disappointed. Questions are welcome.Further discounts are offered for purchasing 2 or more items in one order International buyers should enquire about postage prior. Feel free to check out our other stunning and very unique pieces of artwork. Solid ebony carvings and tribal artefacts

VINTAGE AFRICAN WOODEN TRIBAL CARVING MAKONDE TREE OF LIFE ENTWINED FIGURES
A vintage African wooden carving. Possibly a Makonde Tree of Life, but I'm not certain on this. 11 inches tall and weighs 1.3 kilos. Has several unsightly glue repairs which I'm sure can be improved upon, age related cracks and traces of paint or filler here and there. Also has a hole crudely drilled into the side of the base. It leans to one side but isn't in danger of falling over. Finally there's a tar or bitumen type substance on part of the base. I've tried to show everything in the photos. Please scroll through to the end. Can't date it precisely but I'm certain it has some age. Despite the faults it's got something about it. Sorry about the fuzzy appearance of some of the photos.

And more recently the work of modern Makonde artists have been much appreciated by the thousands of visitors to Kenya and Tanzania. ... moreThe author Jorn Korn discovered modern Makonde sculpture while working on a technical aid mission in East Africa. And between the years 1966-1970 assembled his own private collection. He has selected for this book, the sculpture of five outstanding artists whose work he believes worthy of serious consideration" The brief profiles of each artist's life and his relationship with his work were compiled by the author in lengthy talks with the men themselves. BACKGROUND Inhabiting the southeast of Tanzania and the northeast of Mozambique are about 500.000 Makonde, divided into matrilineal clans, each one comprising several villages. Clan members meet only for the ancestral cult and to celebrate initiations. The Makonde believe in a world of ancestor spirits and in malevolent spirits who make an appearance during the ceremonies that close initiation rites. According to legend, shortly after the Creation, the first man, wandering around outside the bush, sculpted a female figure out of wood, and the statue became a real woman who gave him many children and, after her death, became the venerated ancestress of the Makonde. This accounts for the ancestress cult as well as the profusion of sculpted female figures, kept in huts. During this intensive months-long ritual, girls and boys were provided with knowledge and skills essential to the Makonde way of life. The Makonde practice of carving protective ancestor figures predates the colonial era. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Sho
Set of two large 1960's/1970's Makonde Ebony carvings, on custom steel pedestals
These are two large and magnificent one-piece Tanzanian ebony wood carvings. Which have been treasured, and are in very good condition. These carvings have been lovingly and professionally custom mounted on milled and brushed-finish stainless steel pedestals. Providing a regal and museum-like presentation. Each upper and lower slab and each pillar of these pedestals is a machined solid piece of stainless steel. The materials and machine shop work alone for these two mountings would probably cost upwards of $600 nowadays. Two large diameter wood screws secure each carving from below. In a secure and well engineered fashion. These pedestals represent custom work, done to order, in a machine shop here in El Cajon, CA, in the 1970's. It could not have been better executed. I consider the height of the pedestals to have been optimized for ... morea floor display. The carvings themselves are very fine pieces, with some attractive blonde highlights naturally occurring in the wood. It's worth nothing that the smaller piece has textured and checkered/tooled areas which are unpolished and which(by design) have an"in the rough" appearance. This, combines with the blonde highlights in the wood, and should not be mistaken for weathering or poor condition. The textured areas contrast nicely with the two polished faces in the carving. This is as it should be, and was the effect intended by the artist. There is a crack in the right side of the base of the taller"Tree of Life" sculpture, which runs up into the arm of one of the human figures, and ends there. There is another crack in the right front of the base which seems to end there. I understand that this is not unusual in these types of carvings. The cracks do not appear to threaten the structure of the sculpture. There is also a very small ding in the top of the upper steel platform of the same sculpture and a small white paint transfer on the elbow of one of the human figures on the lower right side of the carving, which I'll let someone who knows m

The Makonde are one of the most prolific art-producing cultures in East Africa. And their works are known worldwide. Though often identified with their wildly abstract and sensual"shetani" carvings which are produced for sale, they have a long tradition of ritual art, which includes a wide variety of helmet masks, male and female ancestor figures, and an almost endless variety of utilitarian objects, often of great beauty. The Makonde are a Bantu group who moved into northern Mozambique from their original homelands in Tanzania, near Lake Nyasa. There are still pockets of Makonde living in Tanzania today, separated by the Rovuma River. Despite the proximity of the two groups, they consider themselves culturally distinct, though ideas and artistic traditions are shared. Their first contact with Europeans did not occur until 1910 and, even then, European influence was minimal. Their coastal location hints at an involvement with Swahili slave traders in centuries past, although this is not certain. Recently, enclaves of Makonde have been found living in and near larger cities in Kenya. Recommended Reading: See Kahan. A TANZANIAN TRADITION. I have examined
