This so-called pregnant belly mask comes from the Makonde people. Women play an important role in Makonde mythology and art. The legend is that a man carved a figure of a woman. Fell asleep, and awoke to find that the statue had come to life. She gave him many children, and later became a venerated ancestress. The Makonde have an ancestress cult. Female body masks, depicting a torso with breasts, pregnant belly, and sometimes scarification patterns, promoted fertility. This female body mask was part of the costume of a special ndimu masker called a mwalindembo presenting a young pregnant woman. The mask was worn by a man and his performances emphasize the difficult of childbirth. For more information. See Kerchache's ART OF AFRICA.  I have examned this piece and agree with the description. This is an absolutely stunning Makonde Mapiko Mask which we picked up during the second half of 2012 in Southern Tanzania and Northern Mozambique. It ... moreis an authentic ritual item which shows signs of considerable ritual use. And measures nearly 12 inches square or 12 inches x 12 inches. This mask is a highly collectible piece due to its authenticity. There is an age crack on the left side of the mask which looks to have been repaired 25 to 30 years ago. The mask is structurally sound. Yet well-weathered. It is between 40 and 50 years old which qualifies it as a bona fide antique. Note: This is not a reproduction. Nor a piece which was fabricated for the purpose of resale. This is an actual ceremonial mask used in Southern Tanzania and Northern Mozambique for ritual and ethno-spiritual purposes. Mapiko Masks are used during a tribal celebration which involve large numbers of the Konde People(Makonde) The initiates become figures of fear when they don these special and frightening masks. The Mapiko ceremony of the Makonde can be seen in Northern Mozambique and Southern Tanzania. Pr. 9" hand-carved AFRICAN Ebony? Tribal Bust Statues, Tanzania; Makonde Tribe?
You are bidding on a pair of individual busts or statues in an Ebony wood; These I was told were very old about 20 yrs. ago; but I can only tell you what I was told and I do believe they are Ebony. From Tanzania; hand-carved by the Makonde Tribe. The ones I have seen on Ebay seem to be all 6" tall; where these are 9" tall and the base is 3" wide. The only thing I can see is the one crack and it has not changed since I got it. Adds patina. You can tell by the feel of them; they feel real and the carving is something else. No stickers or tags to back me up by I feel good about these two beauties. Thankyou for stopping by Owls-Treehouse; almost all of my items are pre-owned. I do flat rates on shipping most of the time.except west coast) add $2.50 to flat rate quoted. I will describe the items to the very best of my abilities. ... morePlease ask questions. As I do forget what is important to the buyer sometimes. I will do a return(your cost) if I am way off of the mark on description; but otherwise no returns; these are pre-owned treasures that have alot of life left for others to enjoy. If the item is new; I will describe it as such. Motto:Treat others the way you want to be treated"

Info about Makonde ... moreand Tree of Life(Ujamaa) The Makonde reside in the Mueda Plateau stretching from southeast Tanzania to northern Mozambique. Separated by the Rovuma River. Today, they live in various parts of Tanzania, Mozambique and Kenya. Although the Makonde of Tanzania are Muslim and those of Mozambique are either Catholic or Muslim, the society was traditionally matrilineal. This means that husbands had to move to the villages of their wives and the offspring of couples belonged to the mothers. The Makonde are noted for their exceptional wood carvings in African blackwood. Or mpingo. The most notable carving theme is"Tree of Life" or"people poles. These intricate carvings reference ujamaa, brotherhood, cooperation, family, and togetherness, depict a column of intertwined human figures, often appearing as though locked in dance. The idea is that from one block of wood comes the unity of the family, society and ancestors. The older generation is depicted on the bottom, supporting(literally and symbolically) later generations. The central figure is usually a mother surrounded by many clinging children. This theme has its roots in the creation myth of the Makonde, in which a

Makonde style is recognized here by the facial scarification patterns often found on masks and figures and interpreted as an indicaton of mature status of man and woman spirit represented. The male anfemale figures represent the primordial ancesters. Early Makonde myths tell that the first man on earth was alone and made a figure of a woman out of wood and after he slept the sculpture had turned into a real woman to accompany him in his journey. Therefore women are honored as sculptured figures. The carving of the figure with its symmetrical balance of scarification patterns to a well-defined face reflects the carver’s sensibility to balance the symbolic imagery of the figure and natural representation. Besides its fair condition this stool remains an interesting and classic Makonde piece that would standout in any collection. 74824* All content. Vintage African Ebony Wood Carving Sculpture Makonde People Tanzania Unusual
An unusual African Carving. From the design. I am not quite sure of its original purpose or significance. Some has told me that they think it was done by the Makonde People in Tanzania. I have looked up other carving from this area and this certainly appears to be the case. I believe that the wood is Ebony. The well carved head is set off by a towering headdress. Very stylised legs and hands. Please see all of my pictures for the details in this charming wood carving. Size is approximately 14 1/2" tall, so it is quite a large piece. African tribal mask, Makonde childbirth dance, ethnographic art, home decor Z/2
Among the Makonde of South Eastern Tanzania initiation is still one of the most important ritual cycles. The female body mask was part of the costume of a special masker called amwalendembo that was intended to represent a young pregnant woman and was always worn by a male masquerader together with a matching female face mask. The sedate dance dramatized the agonies of childbirth. This mask measures 2 3.5" tall by 1 2" wide. It is in good condition showing only natural wear for it's age. The beautiful colors showing through the belly are unique and dramatic but also give the impression of life within. Warmth and magic! This is a real beauty!

Makonde Hand Carved Ebony Warrior Stands Over 18" Tall
Recently I had the pleasure and thrill to attend the Living Estate Sale of a retired CEO of a Fortune 500 Corporation. In the 1980's. As a Vice-President, he traveled the world extensively. He brought home many fine pieces of art, and I made every effort to obtain as many affordable and great items to bring to the store! For auction is a Maconde Warrior Statue which stands over 18" tall! He carries two spears(which detach) and has a sword at his side. One can see age in his bearded face. A look of resolve. A bit of history about Maconde carvings. There are roughly 1.300,000 Maconde, living is mostly Tanzania and Mozambique. They have been known for decades and master carvers of Ebony, very hard and very dark wood which grows in Eastern Africa. The Maconde have a proud history of independence. they maintained their freedom, avoiding ... moreslavers from the new world, the Middle East, and other parts of Africa. Only in 1920's did their land become Colonized by the Portuguese. Then their carvings became known to the world, and they used the sale of these carvings to partly fund the revolution in the 1960's which drove the Portuguese out! Today. Maconde carvings are found worldwide, they are produced on a mass scale and at many levels of quality. Consider it like painters in the United States, many do it for fun, or for a little profit. Very few are masters. A common term used to describe a Maconde carved masterpiece is to call it"Museum Quality" Now, I can't claim to be an expert, and I've researched as much as I can. What I've mostly learned is the best way to judge a Maconde carving, is to look at it closely. I'm sure a trained eye could do"better" but any eye can do something! So, I urge you, look at the pictures closely. Observe even the details in the base, the hair.how smooth is the skin? I know that these two(another one being listed later) sculptures were the retired CEO's pride and joy. I spoke not only with the person running the estate sale. But his housek

You will see with the different masks we list that they really stand out and not ordinary masks. Beautiful pieces that will look nice in your home. We did not plan on having to downsize and sell most our art, so we DON'T have much INFO if any on these. I will list them as where I BELIEVE they came from but IT IS ONLY MY OPINION. Again, they are very nice pieces. This one we believe came from D R ... moreCongo. Please bid on them for the beauty in the art and how well it is carved! Makonde Anthropomorphic Pipe Nyungwa African
Title, Makonde Anthropomorphic Pipe Nyungwa, Type of Object, Figural Pipe for Smoking, Country of Origin, Tanzania. Mozambique, People, Makonde, Materials, Clay and Metal, Approximate Age, Mid 20th Century, Dimensions, Height 8.5 inches, Overall Condition, Good. Most ofour pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, cracks in foot and in stem. Chips in places, Additional Information: Not only is this a well sculpted figure. It is also a smoking pipe. Tobacco plays a prominent role in Makonde ... morelife used for trade and pleasure. Anthropomorphic pipes were used by elders reflecting their social status and rank while sitting in the chitila, the local men's house where events of the day were discussed or reflections upon past events experienced as young men. The Makonde are known for their art and sculpture and their skill at embellishing objects of everyday use. This pipe shows a seated partial figure or torso with stylized arms connecting to the knees that also served as a carrying handle. The metal stem of the pipe emerges from the lower part of the torso. Finely sculpted pipes literally carved out of clay and later fired were most likely the products of Makonde women potters. This view is reenforced by the fact that the decorative patterns are similar to those found on pottery made by Makonde women. The decorative patterns consist of ladders of cross hatching with zig-zag lines moving around the pipe bowl where the tobacco was placed. The masterfully worked clay body of the pipe was modeled and carved producing crisp edges and finished surfaces. The rounded coconut shell equally serves as a visual pun shaping the buttocks of the seated figure. Few objects captur
Antique Carved Tribal Pipe- Calabash - Tchokwe or Makonde Tribe? Gourd and Bone
For your consideration is an antique/vintage tribal pipe. It seems to be a gourd with carved bone and brass. Because it is apparently rare. The exact origin is unknown. My research found that could be from the Tchokwe Tribe of Zaire or, a Makonde Calabash Pipe from Mozambique. Tanzania. Either way. It is a very old, very unique piece of cultural art. The bone pieces have carved faces in them and there is brass wire wrapped around parts of it. Please email with any questions. Carved to be held under the arm and used to create rhythm while dancing in a Makonde marriage/fertility ceremony. Masqueraders would wear Matumba body masks and Lipico helmet masks in a dance bidding the couple good health. Happiness and an abundance of children. The Makonde belong to the Bantu group of people. Originally living in Mozambique, but have migrated into Tanzania too. The Makonde identified with the developed sculpture traditions originating from Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique. On the high Plateau of Cabo Delgado, more like a fortress than congenial home, the Makonde were both isolated and insulated. The ... moreplateau had a thick thorny bush called Konde, hence'people of konde' or Makonde. Here, they escaped the slave trade and ethnic skirmishes. This province is regarded as the original home of the Makonde. The greater part of the Makonde migration took place between the second and third quarters of the nineteenth century and occupied the Newala plateau where the majority of the Tanzanian Makonde live today. The cylindrical trunk of this imposing trumpet shows two breasts indicating that the sculpture represents a female figure. In addition. The entire trunk is beautifully covered with elaborate geometric motifs. Details on the head helped identify this great piece of art as a Makonde trumpet. The Makonde are one of the most prolific art-producing cultures in East Africa. And their works are known worldwide. Though often identified with their wildly abstract and sensual"shetani" carvings which are produced for sale, they also have a long tradition of ritual art, which includes a wide variety of helmet masks, male and female ancestor figures, and an almost endless variety of utilitarian objects, such as this figural trumpet. There are also the startling female"belly" masks. Masks play a prominent role in Makonde life, and mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycles for boys, as they re-enter society as men, ready to marry. The Makonde are a Bantu-speaking group who moved into northern Mozambique from their original homelands in Tanzania. Near Lake Nyasa. There are still pockets of Makonde living in Tanzania today, and the two grou

The Lipico masks show a wide range of Makonde life and society as they depict initiates. Villagers, coastal Arabs and colonial officials. Makonde will sometimes embellish their masks with human hair(like on this example) or with beards; they will insert pegs for teeth, whiten the eyes and in a quest for realism often show human deformities. Most of the time such masks have a lip plug, which Makonde men used to wear. The type of wood used is locally known as njala. For several splendid examples and more information. Bantu Makonde Tree Of Life Ujamaa Style People Pole Carving Mozambique Tanzania
You are bidding on an early Bantu Makonde sculpture/wood carving known as the Tree of Life or The People Poles in the Ujamaa style. We acquired this piece from a local estate& were told it was originally purchased in Mozambique sometime in the early 1960's. This style of carving originated in the Mueda plateau region of Mozambique& followed the Makonde people when they migrated into southern Tanzania. As with all Ujamaa style carvings. This one depicts a large central figure, in this case it is a woman, surrounded by her children& probably grand children. The sculpture reflects the unity& continuity of the Makonde family. This Tree Of Life was carved from a single large branch of dense black African wood& when viewed from the profile. You can see that the original wood was a curved Y- branched section of the trunk ... moreor limb. The object is carved from a single piece with some of the lighter colored sap wood showing through on the base& on some of the smaller figures. The item is about 22 1/4" tall with varying shades of black brown& a few cream colored areas. The condition is good with age appropriate wear. There are also a few stress cracks which have developed due to time& variations in humidity. The top carving has some damage to the forehead but looks to have been made that way. BACKGROUND Inhabiting the southeast of Tanzania and the northeast of Mozambique are the Makonde. Divided into matrilineal clans, each one comprising several villages. They survive economically from farming and occasionally, cattle rearing. Makonde carvers are prolific producers of masks, statues and decorative objects. The most famous are the Lipico masks, which are used to mark a boy’s initiation into adulthood. Lipico is the name that Makonde men give to the masker of their masquerading association, who is brought from the bush into the village for initiation celebrations. The dances are accompanied by an orchestra of drummers. These masks have realistic features and are often decorated with scarification marks. They are carved with light balsa-like wood and are always worn with a cloth. The lip plug suggests that it is intended to represent a woman elder. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the

THE MALE FIGURE IS ABOUT 8 INCHES TALL, AND THE FEMALE FIGURE IS ABOUT 6 3/4 INCHES TALL-BOTH ARE RELATIVELY HEAVY BECAUSE OF THE EBONY. Please read the description. Wondrous RARE Vintage Tanzania Makonde Spirit Figures Hide & Wood Frame Drum!
Here is a truly exceptional vintage wood and hide frame drum from Tanzania. In quite fine condition overall, measuring app. 14" by 13& 3/4" by about 1& 5/8" thick. This fantastic bit of art and music combined shows just moderate wear, with some small defects as one would expect in handmade items of this nature. It has a warm, tangy sound, as well as some of the strangest artwork one may ever encounter in the drum world. Those of you who only know me from exonumia would never guess that I worked for a major distributor of ethnic art here in the Midwest for some years. And I will challenge anyone in the United States who can say they have repaired and literally"fixed" more African art than I have. Regardless, in also trying to be a part-time percussionist, I have picked up some strange drums over the decades, ... moreand this one is up there. I have personally handled over a hundred of this variety of square hand drum, and there was never one that had such powerful and"Art Brut"like work covering the skin. The sound is great too! Beyond the norm. $49.

Tanzania Makonde Ebony Hand Carved Giraffe
Extremely Beautiful and Rare Collectable This is a very unique and rare collectable in North America due to the size of the carving. It was personally brought back to me from Tanzania by a Missionary friend 11 years ago as a thank you. It is carved out of a single piece of Ebony. Whats particularly unique about this piece is not only the size of the carving but the baby giraffe nursing from it's mother. Carvings that are 24-36" tall are often termed as Large. This one is LARGE as just under 6 feet tall. This Makonde tribe carving of a Mother Giraffe nursing her young is 70" tall. The baby giraffe alone is 29" tall. Its a gorgeous item that pictures can't do justice with the detail that went into the piece. The color and shine of the wood down to the main on the babies neck. Shipping: The shipping will be set at a flat ... morerate as not to have to crate and weigh it in case there is a local pickup. If the actual cost to your destination is less you will receive the difference back by PayPal. We pride ourselves with our great rating on both our eBay accounts

OLD AUTHENTIC AFRICAN TANZANIAN MAKONDE BODY or BELLY MASK WITH HEAD
For sale is an authentic old African Tanzanian Makonde body or belly mask with a head/ face. It is approx. 30" L X 10' D& 12 1/2" W. These masks were worn in dances that accompanied the return of boys from bush camp. The mask represents a pregnant young woman. This is a really old piece as can been seen from patina& areas of black paint: I believe it is early 20th c. It has some wood material loss around the edges; some tracks from insects(long ago) on the belly but they do not go through the wood(as can be seen in the photos) which gives the mask character; otherwise. It is in quite good condition for its age. This genuine early belly mask would be a great addition to any African art collection. Thank you for looking and please browse my store.
