Face and neck, large chip in base, shallow cracks, horn cracked and chipped, old insect damage arrested, Additional Information: An interesting Songye figure in the form of a Janus with two heads. A pair of arms and a pair of legs. The janus represent a male and female. The remain of a raffia skirt can be seen around the waist. The figure is covered with a black dark patina! The horn enserted in the head was used to hold magical substances. Such figures belong to the category of Nkishi(plural Mankishi) usually recognized by the presence of magic elements attached to the figure the surface. These Magic elements known as"Bishimba" give the figure its magical power. Many groups in the greater Congo area. In the past many Songye objects have been misattributed to the Luba and vice versa. History: Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo. Who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. The Lomani River divides Songye territory and marks the boundary of the areas invaded by the Luba. As a result of these geographic and political differences there emerged of two distinct social structures among the eastern and western Songye and two stylistic differences in art forms between the two areas. This is a classic Luba– Hemba figure that would stand well in any collection. The image of a female figure holding a bowl is found among a number of stylistically related groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo either one of the Luba subgroups or neighbours subtlety influenced by Luba art and symbolism. The different forms and styles of Luba influenced sculptures generally served a common purpose as?objects of power? Ritual and ceremony. This figure and bowl serves to recognize the rank of a chief or senior lineage head as it would be a chiefly container of some prestige or serve local diviners holding various objects and substances required for divination. Both faces have a vertical row of brass tacks on the nose reaching to the forehead. The complex and elegant hairstyle of the larger female figure must be noted as a major factor of Luba aesthetics. This is a beautiful antique Luba face mask from the Katanga region in South East DRC. The Luba is a large tribe whose establishment as an organized power can be traced back to the 16 th c. The Luba Empire then expanded through the 19 th c. before eroding in part due to the European colonization. As a major center of power. The Luba civilization produced a vast number of political and royal insignia(staff, spears, knifes, axles, cups, headrests, stools, etc. as well as masks. Eastern Luba refers to a group located at the most eastern part of Luba territory– of mixed origin(Luba, Hemba, Buyu) and at the time vassals of the Luba King. Eastern Luba also carved a variety of objects(of power and ritual) and masks– which incorporate elements of the main Luba group and from the other originating tribes. Luba actually produced round face masks– sometimes ... moreassociated to the Kifwebe of neighboring Songye. The piece here is round in shape- with a thin nose forming a tiny crest on the upper part of the mask. It has slit eyes and mouth. The mask is entirely covered in small striations except for a zone around the eyes and mouth that is covered with a brown patina. This is an unusual mask. It shows a slight(indigenous) restoration on the chin. Dimensions are approximately 12x10.

Stains, chips, Additional Information: A superb kifwebe mask with a large r face and finial striations painted in red and white. Facial details include a long nose extended to the crest. Large downcast eyes in blackand tubular mouth. Kifwebe of this kind are particularly found among the Luba eastern. The Kifwebe tradition which exists among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba-Songe admixture. Kifwebe masks originated from the Songye and were adopted by the Luba. Among ... morethese two people masks such as this were made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square and protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red like on this example. They served not only to indicate a chiefâs or titleholderâs rank and social status but equally served as abstract devices to indicate the chief's lineage history. Genealogy, their ancestors and serves as a residence of the spirits. The designs and figures can be read by the chief and the spiritual medium that blesses the staff and loads it with magical and ritual properties. The couple at the top of this staff reflects the unique nature of Luba chieftain for it is thought by the Luba that the kingâs spirit is split between the female and male bodies and thus chiefly power is shared and interdependent. Sometimes. These motifs form a complex symbolic narrative related to the king, his history, his roles and responsibilities. It is a particularly distinctive blending of sculpture and function in that it is a drum to be played and a figure to be admired. Slit drums found throughout Africa are carved form a solid piece of wood and then laboriously hollowed out. This drum has a central slit with a narrower slit along each side parallel to the center rectangular opening.
