Luba arts counts amongst the finest that Africa has to offer. Artists occupied a privileged place in the hierarchy. The Luba artist carried a ceremonial ax on his shoulder. Luba or Neighbors Half Figure DR Congo African Miniature
Title, Luba or Neighbors Half Figure DR Congo African Miniature, Type of Object, Carving. Miniature, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Luba or neighbors(Zela. Zula, Tumbwe, Kasongo) Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 9.5 inches H.x 3.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Fair. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, cracks in base, Additional Information: A half figure with cavity in the head. The surface shows a worn ... moredark patina. The figure is identified with the Luba or neighbors(Zela. Zula, Tumbwe, Kasongo) from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Among these peoples miniatures like this belong to the category of power figures commissioned by the ritual specialists(Nganga) and used by individuals for protection against evil forces, and for their wealth and well-being. Such miniatures are kept in individual shrine to ensure good long-term relationship with the spirit and get permanent blessings from him. The history of the Luba can be traced back at least 500 years. And they have dominated much of southern part of the Congo during most of this timespan. While there are dozens of art-producing peoples of Congolese origin who have contributed significantly to the recognition of West African art, the Luba, along with their closely related neighbors the Hemba, are debatably the most important of them all, with many masterpieces scattered throughout the world. In fact, much of the art from the southern half of the Congo will contain Luba elements, showing that indeed imitation is the highest form of flattery. The Luba, like most African peoples, fashion a wide variety of everyday objects out of

Damage/Repair, Patina worn away. Large cracks(splits)throughout from head, neck, torso, stool, and base; dents, chips, scrapes and scratches in several places, patina worn off. Additional Information: ... moreThis well used female figure sitting on a stool comes from the Luba people or from a small sub-group surrounding the Luba. Many of Luba sculpture depict a female person. It is through woman that the continuity of the clan is ensured. It is through woman that the ancestor reveals himself anew in the child" see Neyt. F. Luba, 1994) The woman gives life and nourishes the community. Female figures are considered to embody the spirits guarantor of fecundity and well-being of members of the community. The Luba excel at the veneration of feminine beauty and motherhood. And much of their skillfully crafted artworks, like this exquisite headrest, reflect this ideal. The use and function of this sculpture remain unclear. It is possible that this sculpture was used as a memorial figure. The surface shows that the figure was painted several time and used during an extensive period of time. The history of the Luba can be traced back at least 500 years. And they have dominated much of southern part of the Congo during most of this time span. At the height of their expansion their empire stretched east all the way to Lake Tanganyika. Luba Society is still a large culture, numbe

Vintage Luba Female Sitting Stool from the Congo
Vintage Luba Female Sitting Stool from the Congo. From around the mid 20th Century Stools such as this are important and prestigious objects among the Luba. This explains why they are always carved with big care and attention on details. The allure of caryatid figures reinforces the definition of prestige object attached to the stools. These caryatid carvings are used exclusively by chiefs and important elders. And are not objects intended for daily use. The chief sits on a stool when he is invested, and afterwards when he mediates between the world of the living and the world of the ancestors. The stool is the medium for these spiritual contacts, and thus vital to a chief carrying out his royal duties. Although the Luba trace their heritage through men, royal objects such as this stool most often utilize female forms. In that respect, this ... morestool supported by a female is of great interest. It demonstrates beautifully the essential role of art in both social life and ceremony. The Luba are one of the dominant cultures of the Congo, and perhaps number around one million. They are debatable the most recognized and respected of all the art-producing cultures in central Africa. I have many items listed right now from the Congo region of Africa. I have many statues. Masks, baskets, musical instruments and even a rug. All the items are handmade in Africa and most are vintage and there are some very rare pieces. AFRICAN LUBA-HEMBA CALABASH GOURD FETISH SUPERB PATINA SECOND QTR 20TH CENTURY
This old Luba-Hemba Calabash(Gourd) fetish with an attached female figure holding her breasts probably dates to the 2 nd quarter of the 20 th century. Notable elements of this attractive carving include an elongated(Alien”like) head and coiffure/headdress. A protruding navel and raised scarification on the stomach area. The carving has a rich shiny black patina lightening to a reddish brown in the raised areas. The gourd itself has some cracks and has been reattached to the woman’s torso with wire in a rather crude. Makeshift fashion. This is the shape the piece was in when I got it. Perhaps. The future owner can do a better job of retying the gourd to the carving using better materials. The seam between the figure and the gourd would originally have been covered either with decorative fiber or with feathers or both. The carving’s left arm ... morehas been reattached at the wrist and at the shoulder. The face is serene and composed yet very powerful and the squared shoulders radiate strength and womanhood at its most confident. This is a superb piece of African art even with its minor flaws. For your reference. I have included a picture with two related examples from an auction catalogue. VERY OLD FETISH LUBA COUPLE ENCRUSTED LIBATION PATINA RARE 19th to 20th C
Carved representations of couples hold a special place among African tribal statuary. This is a very rare old Luba carving of a couple- probably created to promote fertility and to provide psychic protection. In many African societies. Combined male and female figures often represent the archetypal primordial couple of creation. In this piece. Not only are the male and female figures carved together out of a single piece of wood, but they are also depicted with arms outstretched towards each other’s necks in demonstration of their union. The carving has a thick black encrusted patina from past sacrificial libations. An intact fetish bundle sits over the heads of the carved couple and each figure has a string of old beads around the waist. There is an old break about halfway between the extended overlapping arms but this has been professionally ... morerepaired and is noticeable only upon very close inspection. This beautiful old“double” Luba statue comes from my family’s private ethnographic collection. Formed on-and-off since about 1910 or 1915, starting with my grandfather. I would conservatively volunteer a late 19 th or early 20 th century dating for the piece. But it could very easily originate well before that. Height w/stand = 7.5” Width(statue only) = 4” Thickness(statue only) = 2.75” Statue will be delivered with the mounting, as seen in the photos. I am currently downsizing and selling part of my personal collection of ethnographic and related materials in order to help pay for my next major project( relocating to a new residence. SMALL LUBA HEMBA PROTECTIVE FETISH FIGURE ENCRUSTED SACRIFICIAL PATINA
This is a small. Beautifully carved female fetish figure with hands resting on its abdomen in a position of repose. It shows shiny black patina on its raised. Exposed areas including the forehead and breasts while other parts of the body are heavily encrusted with old sacrificial material. The figure’s head has a striated coiffure and is mounted with a gently flaring conical finial for storing fetish material. This miniature’s well-detailed face is probably one of its most alluring features. Small carvings such as this were often carried by individuals to assure their prosperity. Well-being and protection. Such fetishes were prescribed by village healers or diviners to counteract illness or danger. They may also have been kept on premises in order to enhance their owners’ psychic or spiritual powers. It is often more difficult to identify ... morethe tribal origin of a miniature carving simply because its diminutive size tends to lacks a wealth of details which can be used as identification landmarks. When I showed this piece to an African gentleman who appraised tribal art for a living. He suggested that it was the work of Luba or Hemba carver probably dating to the mid-20 th Century. Its height is 8.25” without the base. The base is included in this auction. Unusual Luba/ tabwa stool w/ kneeling figure 10x 6 1/4"
Unusual stool probably made by the Luba people of Africa. The hairdo is similar to that used by the Tabwa people. The kneeling male figure has an elongated head and hands supporting his chin. The face is very naturalistic and gives the impression of someone in deep thought. The seat of the stool itself is supported on the figure's back rather than the arms as is most common. This is an intriguing piece; shows signs of use. And was obviously made by an outstanding sculptor. It is wonderfully carved from a single block of wood. It measures: 10 inches high with a 6 1/4 inch diameter seat. ``d.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fvo%7B%3Dd70f%2B%3E%60%60d-13f5c56087a-0x101-

DR Congo Additional Information: Interesting Luba little female with hairstyle in cascade. The representation of women is omnipresent in the art of the Luba. This demonstrates the respect and importance that Luba artists lavish on women. Though the vital role of women in any society is obvious. The sculptural and ritual emphasis placed upon them by the Luba is not completely understood. It is thought, however, that the artisitic dominance of the female form originated somewhere ... morein Luba mythology. The world's greatest museums and private collections are filled with Luba sculpture, as the beauty of some of their finest pieces transcends those of almost any other African culture. For such a small group, their impact on the art world has been extraordinary. 72569* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Direct. The carved head with its serene face has facial features typical of the Luba sculpture. Luba always carve their headrests with great care which reflects the importance of these artifacts to the owner. Headrests like this were personal items used by their owners as pillows to protect their neck and for their comfort while resting or lying on the mat. They were also used to protect their ceremonial coiffure. As François Neyt noted. Symbolically these headrests are the support of life itself. They also prevent bad dreams. The Luba excel at the veneration of feminine beauty and motherhood. And much of their skillfully crafted artworks, like this exquisite headrest, reflect this ideal. The history of the Luba can be traced back at least 500 years. And they have dominated much of southern part of the Congo during most of this time span. The image of a female figure holding a bowl is found among a number of stylistically related groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo either one of the Luba subgroups or neighbors subtlety influenced by Luba art and symbolism. The different forms and styles of Luba influenced sculptures generally served a common purpose as?objects of power? Ritual and ceremony. This figure and bowl serves to recognize the rank of a chief or senior lineage head as it would be a chiefly container of some prestige or serve local diviners holding various objects and substances required for divination.
