They are male or female, generally measuring between 20 and 70 cm, standing, legs bent on circular bases, with numerous scarifications, sometimes wearing a headdress. The whole is of great stylistic variety. In Treasures of Africa / Tervuren, page 370, we learn that the position of the hands on either side of the navel underlines the relationship between the holders of the figurines and their predecessors. BACKGROUND The Luba empire was founded in 16th century in the Upemba depression by King Kongolo and rapidly expanded the kingdom to encompass all the territories on the upper left bank of the Lualaba River. DRC. Luba artists created numerous objects that related to the royal court activities. Prestige objects were usually decorated with female figures which are omnipresent in Luba art. As the Luba Empire extends over a vast territory, there are a large number of stylistic variations. Aside from masks and statues everyday objects were also produced. Some of the prestige objects are anthropomorphic caryatid stool, bow-stand, spear, staff, pipe, axe, neck-rest and terracotta. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or heddle- pulley which is after all only a functional object for the purpose of weaving seemed to me then and today as beautiful as a Greek goddess. The fetish moved me as deeply as the bobbin by its silent tragic dignity and its air of profound meditation. GUARANTEE AUT

Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Luba, Materials, wood, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, 16.75 inches x 3.25 inches x 3 inches Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, cracks in heads and faces. Cracks and chips in board, Additional Information: This is a challenging piece to identify. The heads in each side of this board show features that related this object to the Luba. It is not easy to a function of this board. Could it be a divination board? There is not traces of rubbing to confirm this function. It could not be a stool because it's too slow. It is possible that this could be a low headrest. Despite its unusually large size, this is a well-carved example. Luba always carve their headrests with great ... morecare reflecting the importance of these artifacts to the owner. Headrests like this were personal items used by their owners as pillows to protect their neck and for their comfort while resting or lying on the mat. They were also used to protect their ceremonial coiffure. As François Neyt noted. Symbolically these headrests are the support of life itself. They also prevent bad dreams. The Luba excel at the veneration of feminine beauty and motherhood. And much of their skillfully crafted artworks, like this exquisite headrest, reflect this ideal. The history of the Luba can be traced back at least 500 years. And they have dominated much of southern part of the Congo during most of this time span. At the height of their expansion their empire stretched east all the way to Lake Tanganyika. They are still a large culture, numbering about 1,000,000, and their influence remains significant. While there are dozens of art-producing peoples of Congolese origin who have contributed significantly to the recognition of West African art, the Luba, along with their closely related neighbors the Hemba, are debatably the most important of them all, with many masterpieces scattered t

Arts of Africa - Luba Chief's Staff - DRC - Congo - 61.5" Height x 5.5" Wide
Democratic Republic of the Congo The Luba number 1 million. The vast Luba territory. Comprising the entire southeastern part of the DRC, as far as Tanganyika and Lake Mweru, is uniform as regards language and culture, but racially mixed. Although the history of the Luba people is one of violence and warfare, their artistic style is characterized by harmonious integration of organically related forms. The splendid artistic achievements of the Luba are due to a felicitous intermingling of different racial and cultural elements, and to the high standards prevailing at the court. Luba arts counts amongst the finest that Africa has to offer. Artists occupied a privileged place in the hierarchy. The Luba artist carried a ceremonial ax on his shoulder, an emblem of prestige and of dignity of his position. Some apprentices would be recruited from ... moreamong the deformed, who could neither hunt nor be warriors and who were believed to have a close connection with magic. Among the characteristics of Luba sculpture are: intricate hair-dress. Often in the form of a cross, or falling down like a cascade; a grooved diagonal band separating the hair-line from the forehead; eyes shaped like coffee-beans; small simplified‘cat’s ears’ ornamental cicatrices in relief on the body; the surface elaborately worked and polished. The traditional carvings are for ancestor and spirit cults, for initiation, medical and divination purposes. The favorite theme in sculpture was woman since, according to the Luba myth, vilie was the first woman spirit. Founder of the clan and guarantor of fertility and the lineage. Women were cult guardians, and the royal wives played an important role: sent as emissaries to the chiefs of neighboring ethnicities, they would contract profitable political alliances based on marriage. Some figures are freestanding, almost always in a frontal position, often with their hands on their breasts; others are kneeling, sitting, or standing figures whose upraised hands serve as supports for bowls, seats, and neck rests. RARE OLD AFRICAN CEREMONIAL AXE ATTRIBUTED TO CHOKWE or LUBA - ZAIRE/D.R. Congo
I purchased this axe from a trader at Kisangani market in Zaire(now renamed Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1987. Kisangani market was one of the busiest markets I have encountered in Africa. You could buy there anything you wanted to(and much more you did not) That was the only time I have seen a tribal axe being offered for sale and that was probably because it was damaged. Elaborately handcrafted axes are worn over the shoulder by important Luba tribesmen as symbols of status and power. The fact that the blades of such axes are blunt indicates that they were not meant to be used as weapons but as emblems of prestige. The ceremonial axe has been used for centuries by the Luba people much as a king's scepter in other cultures. Similar axes were also used by Chokwe in south western part of Zaire. The haft part of this axe looks very ... moremuch like the Chokwe haft. The axe's haft is made of one piece of light colored wood. Considerably darkened by age patina, with the top and bottom part stained black. The blade is made of iron which was already rusted when I bought it. I have made no attempt to clean it, since it has been in my possession. There is a little movement to the blade in the haft, most likely because of the missing bit of wood at the top of the blade. The first 7 photos were taken in daylight and the remaining, in artificial light. Dimensions:16 ½" 41 cm) length. 8" 20.5 cm) width(measured at the widest point) During the time I worked and lived in Liberia I started collecting African art. Both traditional and contemporary, I continued enlarging my collection when, few years later, I returned to work in Africa, in Zaire. I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. All such items, which I am selling now on Ebay, were either purchased by me or received as gifts from my coworkers or missionaries I worked with while in Africa. The authenticity of items used in tribal rituals is notoriously difficul

African tribal Luba carved wood caryatid headrest sculpture ethnographic art 09
Luba people. Also called Baluba are a Bantu-speaking people who inhabit a wide area extending throughout much of south-central Congo. Luba headrests are intricately carved, serving as a pillow that is cool and comfortable in their tropical climate, and protecting their elaborate hairstyles by raising the head above the bed. Headrests are items of great personal attachment for the Luba people and were also seen as the seat of dreams. The Luba consider dreams as prophetic, foretelling important events, providing warnings and communicating messages from the other world. This lovely and well used headrest measures 8" wide and 7" tall. Very minor cracks and chips which are to be expected with an item of this age and amount of use and some signs of small repairs.

page ebay arscoin shop CONGO- LUBA TRIBE- 1850 AD ca. CROSS OF KATANGA USED LIKE CURRENCY BRONZE 786 gr. 23x17x1 cm A Katanga cross. Also called a handa, is a cast copper cross which was once used as a form of currency in parts of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo(DRC) in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Katanga crosses were made in various sizes, typically about 20 cm(8 inches) across, and weighing about 1 kilogram(2 pounds) The name derives from Katanga, a rich copper mining region in the south-eastern portion of the DRC. These X-shaped ingots were cast by local coppersmiths by pouring molten copper into sand molds. During its period of currency. LUBA STAFF OF OFFICE #2557 - Dem. Rep. of Congo - For African Art Gallery
Item Number: 2557 Luba Ceremonial Staff Tribe: Luba Country: Democratic Republic of Congo Material: Wood. Cowrie Shell Size: 22.75" 57.8 cm) Tall Luba staffs of office are as conceptually complex as stools. And are among the most plentiful of Luba royal insignia. They are also the most diverse in iconography because their ownership was considerably more democratic than that of stools: caryatid stools were restricted to highest-ranking political office, whereas staffs could belong to diviners, Mbudye members, title-holders, and territorial chiefs. No two Luba staffs are alike because each encodes the histories, genealogies and migrations of a particular family, lineage or chiefdom; and its motifs are mnemonic cues to assist narrators in politically motivated recollection of the past. Among the many types of staffs, misupi recall the paddles ... moreused by the ferryman who guarded critical river crossings during the height of Luba expansion in the nineteenth century. A kibango is the most ornate of staffs. With elongated forms punctuated by articulated broad sections and full female images and/ or heads at the top of or along the shafts. Luba staffs functioned as memory maps assisting the recall of important places. Events, and people of the past. They validated hierarchies of affiliation during litigation, as this staff depicts the figure of a king(represented as a woman) further underscoring the deliberate ambiguity of gender in Luba royal contexts. BACKGROUND The Luba empire was founded in 16th century in the Upemba depression by King Kongolo and rapidly expanded the kingdom to encompass all the territories on the upper left bank ... moreof the Lualaba River.

The Luba artist carried a ceremonial ax on his shoulder, an emblem of prestige ... moreand of dignity of his position. Some apprentices would be recruited from among the deformed, who could neither hunt nor be warriors and who were believed to have a close connection with magic.
