Lobi Standing Female Shrine Figure Bateba Large 27 in. African
Title, Lobi Standing Female Shrine Figure Bateba Large 27 in. African, Type of Object, Figure. Shrine Piece, Country of Origin, Burkina Faso, People, Lobi, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 27 inches H. x 5.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Fair to Good, Damage/Repair, Age cracks in places, Additional Information: A magnificent example of large Lobi statuary. With a timeless surface. The face is pure folk-art magic. It would be tough to find a more prototypical example. Undoubtedly an important piece to the village, it would have held a special place in the shrine. The Lobi, who live in Burkina Faso and Ghana, revere spirits known as Thil, and build a variety of shrines dedicated to them. The"bateba, which range in size from four to twenty inches, are believed to embody the Thil spirits. They are looked upon ... moreas living beings, charged with special powers, who move, fight against witches, and have intercourse with each other. They are a link between the villagers and the Thil, and thus are essential to the harmony of the village. Lobi art, crude and earthy, yet profound in its own way, has gained increasing popularity among collectors. As the Lobi have always known, refinement and decoration are not required to stir the heavens, or move one's soul. Recommended Reading: See AFRICAN ART: ITS BACKGROUND AND TRADITIONS. By Wassing. 6086 Lobi Bateba Phuwe shrine figure display included
ARTE AFRICANA Lobi(Lobiri-Miwa) Lobi Phuwe shrine figure. Material: wood. Blood, sacrifical patina. Origin. Burkina Faso XX Century Size: 22.5 cm, 25 with wood display Thanks for your visit Check out my other items or only Auction B Background The Lobi migrated into Burkina Faso from present day Ghana around 1770. And many of them crossed the border into contemporary Côte d'Ivoire over the next hundred years or so in search of uncultivated lands. Although Lobi villages are often very independent and so politically disorganized, they managed to put up a strong resistance to French colonialization. The Lobi carve numerous types of objects. Ranging from those used every day to figures that embody religious ideals. The figures(bateba) are recognized as living beings, which are placed on the shrines of thila ... moreand are able to communicate with one another and to fight off witches. I t is bIt is believed by the Lobi that at one time they lived in a metaphorical Garden of Eden at one with the god and wanting for nothing. However. As their numbers began to increase men began to fight one another over women, and as a result the god turned his back on them. Not wanting them to be completely lost, the god sent forth thila to take care of the people. The thila are contacted through a diviner who delivers their messages, demands, and prohibitions to the people. The village thil is embodied in a village shrine but, since thila may leave the shrines, they are often uninhabited. Below the thila cosmologically, yet above men, are numerous bush spirits. The Lobi are able freely to distinguish between the bush spirits and the thila based on a series of factors, which at first seem quite confusing to the outsider. 19th Century Lobi People Burkina Faso Stool Two Male Heads Primitive Antique Art
I was given this as a gift many years ago not knowing a lot about this piece. I had to do some serious research to find out from hence it came. It is a three legged stool with two male heads. The 2 heads symbolize either two sons or. Most likely, an exceptional person in the village. It was carved from one piece of wood. It is 2 t long, 7 1/2 inches wide and around a foot high. It weighs 7 to 10 pounds. After searching the Smithsonian and various African galleries for similar pieces, I found out it was a Lobi People from Burkina Faso in Africa. Can I tell you its exact age? No. But the wood has hardened into an almost petrified state(at least to me) and darkened with age. There is no knife, machete or other crude utensil that could probably slice into this wood now(but I could be wrong) This alone gives me the idea that its anywhere from ... more100 to 300 years old. It is a beautiful piece of antique roughly hand crafted primitive art. When I was cleaning the stool, I noticed that a child(I guess) had penned a 2 inch line on top of the seat. I tried to clean with soap and water, but it was a no go. Whoever purchases this piece may be able to get it off. I'm not taking any chances due to the fact that I'm not a specialist. I am setting this auction at an incredibly low starting bid. The value of this work of art is anywhere from $350.00- $900.00
