Damage/Repair, Rusted patina Lobi Iron Snake Currency. African Metalwork Additional Information: A hand-forged iron snake coming from the Lobi. The Lobi live as farmers and spend much time in their fields.They have produced numerous iron. Brass, and bronze figures currencies and and jewelry depicting the snake. This can be understood as the snake is very often associated to the Lobi mythical beings. Also, the Lobi encounter numerous serpents, including the Bites viper and the Boa Constrictor. To protect them from the dangers that the snakes represent forged iron snakes were either worn on their person or placed on personal altars. In addition to examples such as this serpent that probably served as an altar object, women will attach smaller sinuous, flat-modeled images of serpents to the sides of their legs just above the ankle reaching up the leg close to the knee. Generally placed on the outer side of the leg they may often be on the inside of the leg or both sides as well. The bodies will be displayed with a sinuous set of curves as though the snakes were moving through the grass. In many cases, the heads are simply defined as a triangular shape with the mouth possibly noted with a thin line beaten into the side of the face. The Daagari share language and culture with their neighbors the Lobi. Little is known about their art. And since the Daagari have recently converted to Islam art objects are extremely rare. The squat form of the male figure with its abstracted face and light colored wood shares with certain stylistic traits with the Fante of coastal Ghana, however there is a great deal of distance and time between the Daagari and the Fante. The closest prominent art-producing peoples to the Daagari are the Lobi with whom this figure shares some style elements. That it is an old figure cannot be doubted, and there are indications that offerings were poured over the head in the not too distant past. Many figures depicting the snake have been made by the Lobi from various materials. The snake is very often associated with Lobi mythical beings. In order to protect themselves from the snakes. Forged iron snakes were either worn on their person or placed on personal altars. The head of the snake is simply defined as a triangle. The body most often has markings on it’s back and a tapered tail with an overall undulating shape. Used both as protection and currency some had two or even three heads. The length of the snake is 15" It is in perfect condition. Age unknown.

In Burkina Faso and other West African countries. A diviner was consulted whenever turmoil erupted and a problem was persistent. Inverted Y-shaped, wooden sculptures, such as this figure, were created by a carver as a diagnostic aid. They are classic examples of the extreme stylization of the human figure as found among the Dagara people, and related Lobi people of Burkina Faso. The term"bateba" translates to a"wooden carved figure" The Lobi people live in a vast geographical area that stretches from Burkina Fasso. To the Ivory Coast and into Ghana. Villages are spread out over wide areas and are made up of several compounds. The Lobi community is not organized on the basis of kinship or political ties and lacks any kind of centralized political authority in the form of a chief king or council of village elders. Instead the members of the community are united by common adherence to the cult of a nature spirit called“thil” pl thila) and the rules that determine correct social behavior in the community are the rules ... morethat the spirit dictates through the diviner(thildar) The thila are invisible spirits of nature with certain supernatural abilities and powers that they can use for malevolent or benevolent ends. Each village has a particular spirit(dithil) that is responsible for the entire village. Social behavior is regulated by these thila. Whose will is passed to ordinary people by priests and diviners. Wooden or clay sculpture, called bateba, act as an intermediary between a particular thil and the Lobi community. Lobi bateba figures have a wide degree of style and are made for a wide range of purposes. In Lobi communities anyone can learn to carve. It is not limited to people with specialized training. Lobi bateba figures are believed to be able to act in behalf of their owner. They are considered a living being and have the ability to act out against forces that could harm it’s owner or bring good things to it’s owner depending on it’s intended purpose.
