LOBI THIL WORSHIP POST STATUE LOBI THIL WORSHIP POST STATUE Type of object: Post Material: wood. Pigment Ethnic Group: Lobi Country of origin: Burkina ... moreFaso Condition: Item is in good condition. Heigth: 47 inches(121 cm) The post was used to carry a recipient for tribal animist sacrifices. About the Lobi and their Art The Lobi carve numerous types of objects. Ranging from those used every day to figures that embody religious ideals. The figures(bateba) are recognized as living beings, which are placed on the shrines of thila and are able to communicate with one another and to fight off witches. It is believed by the Lobi that at one time they lived in a metaphorical Garden of Eden at one with the god and wanting for nothing. However. As their numbers began to increase men began to fight one another over women, and as a result the god turned his back on them. Not wanting them to be completely lost, the god sent forth thila to take care of the people. The thila are contacted through a diviner who delivers their messages, demands, and prohibitions to the people. The village thil is embodied in a village shrine but, since thila may leave the shrines, they are often uninhabited. Below the thila cosmologically, yet above men, are numerous bush spirits. The Lobi are able freely to distinguish between the bush spirits and the thila based on a series of factors, which at first seem quite confusing to the outsider. Sculptors. Who live off farming, devote only part of their time to sculpture; their period of apprenticeship may be reduced, so that the objects are of variable quality, often quite mediocre. The Lobi do not use masks, but create male and female spirit figures called bateba and heads sculpted on top of a post planted in the ground. Bateba is considered as a living being and may see, communicate, and intervene on behalf of its thil spirit. Lobi figures are between 2” and 35” high. In every house a small shrine room is set apart for the worship of ancestral spirits. Shrines are built to the thil spir

Title, Lobi Bateba Thil Shrine Figure 24 inch African, Type of Object, Figure. Shrine Piece, Country of Origin, Burkina Faso, People, Lobi, Materials, ... moreWood, Approximate Age, mid 20th century, Dimensions, 24 inches H. x 4 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, shallow cracks. Chips, and dents in places, Additional Information: A magnificent example of a Lobi shrine piece. With a timeless surface. Undoubtedly an important piece to the village, it would have held a special place in the shrine. The Lobi, who live in Burkina Faso and Ghana, revere spirits known as Thil, and build a variety of shrines dedicated to them. The"bateba, which range in size from four to twenty inches, are believed to embody the Thil spirits. They are looked upon as living beings, charged with special powers, who move, fight against witches, and have intercourse with each other. They are a link between the villagers and the Thil, and thus are essential to the harmony of the village. Lobi art, crude and earthy, yet profound in its own way, has gained increasing popularity among collectors. As the Lobi have always known, refinement and decoration are not required to stir the heavens, or move one's soul. Recommended Reading: See AFRICAN ART: ITS BACKGROUND AND TRADITIONS. By Wassing. Old Lobi Wood Polychrome Altar Fetish of a Sacred Bird- AFRICA An old Lobi wood polychrome fetish figure of a bird. Carved out of a heavy weight wood. ... moreThe neck is adorned with cowrie shells; traces of blue European paint remain. The carving is naturalistic and possibly represents a turtle-dove. One of the animal subjects often depicted in Lobi sculpture. The sacred bird is honored and revered by the Lobi and may form part of the diviner’s altar. Or may be placed at the family’s altar, taking a place next to the founding ancestors. Once they have gained their place at the altar, they are never again moved, as they have bee“planted” there and must be respected for the pact that they have made with the ancestors. Altar sculptures of birds are characteristically very naturalistic and size is true to nature. As the true forms of the bird are represented; posture, however, is dictated by the thil, or supernatural spirit, and instructions are provided to the diviner, or fetisher. At the altar. Food will always be present beside the turtle-dove, as seeds, wild comestible berries are central to the cult of the fetish. Nice encrusted patina. Bateba are believed to embody the spirit of the thila. And once the bateba is placed at the sacred altar, he or she, becomes active. The Lobi dwelling could have several altars dedicated to the placement of various and different thilbia(spirits incarnated as statuettes) There may be various stages prior to a thil being incarnated as a statue of wood, metal, or clay. The Lobi view the intermediary bateba figures on a level superior to human beings. Whom they resemble, but inferior to the village protective spirits or thila, from whom they derive their powers. Lobi statuary sets itself aside from the majority of African statuary. In that there exists a large variety of forms and individualistic styles. As is the case with the majority of Lobi bateba. Lobi Bulbous Flute Burkina Faso African SALE Was $49
Title, Lobi Carved Flute BULBOUS Burkina Faso African, Type of Object, Flute. Whistle, Country of Origin, Burkina Faso, People, Lobi, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, 10 inches H. x2.5 W. Overall Condition, Fair to good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, chips. Cracks, scratches, Additional Information: A wooden flute in bulbous shape. The surface shows signs of long use. One of the most common musical instruments found ... moreamong the various people of Burkina Faso is the top blown flute. Flutes are widely traded and therefore often difficult to attribute to one group or another. Lobi. Bwa, Bobo, Nuna, Senufo, Gurunsi, Mossi and so forth have produced similar flutes. Our example came with the label of Lobi flute. This is a well used example from the wear around the mouthpiece and on the surface. Across Burkina Faso flutes such as this were during mask dances. For hunting or war. Whistles such as this are played either singly or in concert with other instruments such as the long chord drums, the calabash drums, horns, iron gongs, finger bells, and small bells. The player will hold the flute close to the lower lip and blown across to produce a pleasant high pitched tone. Often used by men and boys during ceremonies and dance masks they are integral parts of social life and serve to provide musical support to important rites of passage for young and old. They accompany ceremonies in close association with local languages which are tonal and match language patterns. BACKGROUND The Lobi migrated into Burkina ... moreFaso from present day Ghana around 1770. And many of them crossed the border into contemporary Côte d'Ivoire over the next hundred years or so in search of uncultivated lands. Although Lobi villages are often very independent and so politically disorganized, they managed to put up a strong resistance to French colonialization. They revere spirits known as Thil. Shrines are built to these spirits under the instruction of a sorcerer and placed either on the roof or inside the home and are filed with objects such as vessels, abstract iron figures, stone and wood figures known as Bateba, which are believe to embody the Thil spirits. Lobi art also consist of much utilitarian objects including flutes, containers and stools. These stools are sometimes decorated with human or animal head. The type with three leg supports implicate phallic connotation. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I b

Lobi People Burkina Faso 3 Legged Stool w/ Two Male Heads Primitive Antique Art
I was given this as a gift many years ago not knowing a lot about this piece. I had to do some serious research to find out from hence it came. It is a three legged stool with two male heads. The 2 heads symbolize either two sons or. Most likely, an exceptional person in the village. It was carved from one piece of wood. It is 2 t long, 7 1/2 inches wide and around a foot high. It weighs 7 to 10 pounds. After searching the Smithsonian and various African galleries for similar pieces, I found out it was a Lobi People from Burkina Faso in Africa. Can I tell you its exact age? No. But the wood has hardened into an almost petrified state(at least to me) and darkened with age. There is no knife, machete or other crude utensil that could probably slice into this wood now(but I could be wrong) This alone gives me the idea that its anywhere from ... more100 to 300 years old. It is a beautiful piece of antique roughly hand crafted primitive art. When I was cleaning the stool, I noticed that a child(I guess) had penned a 2 inch line on top of the seat. I tried to clean with soap and water, but it was a no go. Whoever purchases this piece may be able to get it off. I'm not taking any chances due to the fact that I'm not a specialist. I am setting this auction at an incredibly low starting bid. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp73%28e013%3F%3E%3A-13edfd706b3-0xf8-
