Damage/Repair, Rusted patina Lobi Iron Snake Currency. African Metalwork Additional Information: A hand-forged iron snake coming from the Lobi. The Lobi live as farmers and spend much time in their fields.They have produced numerous iron. Brass, and bronze figures currencies and and jewelry depicting the snake. This can be understood as the snake is very often associated to the Lobi mythical beings. Also, the Lobi encounter numerous serpents, including the Bites viper and the Boa Constrictor. To protect them from the dangers that the snakes represent forged iron snakes were either worn on their person or placed on personal altars. In addition to examples such as this serpent that probably served as an altar object, women will attach smaller sinuous, flat-modeled images of serpents to the sides of their legs just above the ankle reaching up the leg close to the knee. Generally placed on the outer side of the leg they may often be on the inside of the leg or both sides as well. The bodies will be displayed with a sinuous set of curves as though the snakes were moving through the grass. In many cases, the heads are simply defined as a triangular shape with the mouth possibly noted with a thin line beaten into the side of the face. Lobi stools are carved from a heavy, dense wood and their simple, abstract forms carries great visual power and the shiny yellowish patina with trace of red powder and wear show some use and age. The Janus heads extending from the seat is finely carved. Its general form allowed the Lobi men to carry it on their shoulders when not being sat upon. Lobi stools such as this were used by men to sit on. They also were used to beat upon the ground when an elder approached as a sign of respect for the older person. The Lobi gorgeous three-legged stools can be crude and undecorated. Or have animal or bateba-like heads or figures like on this example. Wonderful Older carved Lobi African Reclining Stool Nice Lines Rich Patina NR
For sale is a Lobi reclining stool that I bought at an estate sale about 8 years ago in the Washington DC area. It’s a beautiful piece with lots of character. Take a look at the photos. The Lobi are an ethnic group that originated in what is today Ghana. This is a used piece with nice patina and wear from where the user sat. It’s carved from one piece of wood and in some places is several inches thick. It has three squat legs– two in front and one in back. The reclining neck piece as a notched. Zigzag design and looks a bit like a geometric animal is you look at it one way and a guitar neck if you look at it another. You can see the worn blade marks in some places from the axe or adze used to shape its surface. In some places the wood is over 3 inches thick. At the tallest it stands about 10.5 inches tall(26.7 cm) and it’s about 20 inches ... morelong(50.1 cm) and 5.5 inches wide(14 cm) This has some age and use to it… in a good way. The wood is worn smooth on the face from being sat on. There are some scratches. But most of them are smoothed from the usage. There are some tight cracks(see the photos) but everything is very solid. There are two holes through the body that I think were old knots and probably there from its creation. And, one edge has gnawing from termites or something similar. The photos show everything. And I'm also selling an interesting pair of Yoruba bronze male female figures. If you have any questions. And many of them crossed the border into contemporary Côte d'Ivoire over the next hundred years or so in search of uncultivated lands. Although Lobi villages are often very independent and so politically disorganized, they managed to put up a strong resistance to French colonialization. They revere spirits known as Thil. Shrines are built to these spirits under the instruction of a sorcerer and placed either on the roof or inside the home and are filed with objects such as vessels, abstract iron figures, stone and wood figures known as Bateba, which are believe to embody the Thil spirits. Lobi art also consist of much utilitarian objects including flutes, containers and stools. These stools are sometimes decorated with human or animal head. The Daagari share language and culture with their neighbors the Lobi. Little is known about their art. And since the Daagari have recently converted to Islam art objects are extremely rare. The squat form of the male figure with its abstracted face and light colored wood shares with certain stylistic traits with the Fante of coastal Ghana, however there is a great deal of distance and time between the Daagari and the Fante. The closest prominent art-producing peoples to the Daagari are the Lobi with whom this figure shares some style elements. That it is an old figure cannot be doubted, and there are indications that offerings were poured over the head in the not too distant past. Brass, and bronze figures currencies and and jewelry depicting the snake. This can be understood as the snake is very often associated to the Lobi mythical beings. Also, the Lobi encounter numerous serpents, including the Bites viper and the Boa Constrictor. To protect them from the dangers that the snakes represent forged iron snakes were either worn on their person or placed on personal altars. In addition to examples such as this serpent that probably served as an altar object, women will attach smaller sinuous, flat-modeled images of serpents to the sides of their legs just above the ankle reaching up the leg close to the knee. Generally placed on the outer side of the leg they may often be on the inside of the leg or both sides as well.
