Nice old antique African stool from the Lobi tribe. This stool takes on a superb sculptural quality. First. You have the thick legs, a large thick one ... moreto the back and then two smaller but thick legs to the front. Rising from the neck of the stool are two heads. The faces are sublime and they have some type of headdress rising from the top. The stool is 19" long from the back keg to the top of the head and it stands 9 1/2" as measured to the top of the head. The wood has developed a very nice patina and the stool is in uncleaned condition. This stool comes from a collection formed in the 1940's so it would pre date that. Most probably early 20th century. A wonderful piece of African art. Please e-mail with any questions. Mplease view my other auctions for a great variety of swords, daggers, clubs and tribal art. Sword. BACKGROUND The Lobi migrated into Burkina Faso from present day Ghana around 1770. And many of them crossed the border into contemporary Côte d'Ivoire over the next hundred years or so in search of uncultivated lands. Although Lobi villages are often very independent and so politically disorganized, they managed to put up a strong resistance to French colonialization. They revere spirits known as Thil. Shrines are built to these spirits under the instruction of a sorcerer and placed either on the roof or inside the home and are filed with objects such as vessels, abstract iron figures, stone and wood figures known as Bateba, which are believe to embody the Thil spirits. Lobi Bateba figures may be small or very large in size. They typically have slightly bent legs with roughly carved feet and an enlarged head with a high smooth or grooved coiffure. Some type of Bateba may be carved with different postures corresponding to various Thil. Statues with single raised arm symbolize a dangerous Thil, while copulating couples or maternity figures are believed to enhance the fertility of women living in the house. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention on

Lobi Tribe Africana Knife Bell Antique Sickle Sigh Weapon Burkina Faso Africa
Authentic lobi tribe from today's Ghana region. Acquired in the forties from a major collector named coffee in NY. The item is from 1880-1920 before the tribe was dispersed. It is authentic and very unique. It is like a knife and a sickle with a bell in the handle. Out of thousands of items I picked this one of a kind item. It is very interesting and ironic that you would attack someone with a bell in the handle( kind of blow your cover) No really. I think it was for a shepherd of some kind that would hewn down wheat or another crop as he could shake the bell to call in his flock. Crude craftsmanship. In addition to examples such as this serpent that probably served as an altar object, women will attach smaller sinuous, flat-modeled images of serpents to the sides of their legs just above the ankle reaching up the leg close to the knee. Generally placed on the outer side of the leg they may often be on the inside of the leg or both sides as well. The bodies will be displayed with a sinuous set of curves as though the snakes were moving through the grass. In many cases, the heads are simply defined as a triangular shape with the mouth possibly noted with a thin line beaten into the side of the face. The tails are depicted by a tapering form and the body has the usual undulated snake form. Among the Lobi and rel

IRON FETISH OBJECT LOBI DOGON FON MUMUYE CHAMBA MAMBILA
AFRICAN FETISH POWER OBJECT. IRON. HEIGHT OBJECT: 40 cm( ca. 15.8 Inch) HEIGHT WITH BASE: 46.5 cm( ca. 18,3 Inch)
*** A VERY POWERFUL & EARLY LOBI BATEBA ***
A VERY POWERFUL& EARLY LOBI BATEBA* Country: Burkina Faso Description: A haunting Lobi Beteba bust with an extremely old and weathered patina. Strong facial features with arms to the side and hands resting on the belly. A very strong piece. The Lobi people inhabit an area at the meeting point of three countries: Burkina Faso. Ghana and Ivory Coast. The Lobi migrated to Burkina Faso in successive waves from northwestern Ghana, from the 18th to the end of the 19th centuries. In the past they were hunters and gatherers, now they are farmers, struggling for existence in the dry avannah. They are still moving southward, in search of more fertile soil for their slash and burn agriculture. They also raise goats, sheep, cattle and a great variety of fowl. During the dry season, when they cannot work in the fields, men build and repair houses ... moreand granaries, carve wooden sculptures and make musical instruments, such as the balophon. Women make pottery and baskets and work the marketplace. Like most West African peoples. The Lobi believe that the universe is composed of a creator god, a host of supernatural creatures, and living and dead human beings. The structure of the universe is pyramidal. God, Tangba, is at the pinnacle, human beings are at the base. Under Tangba are the Thila, spirits with human characteristics. Below the Thila, but above human beings, are the spirits of the bush, the Kontuossi. The Lobi relate to the supernatural world– the Thila and the Kontuossi– by means of the Bateba, statuettes of wood, clay or metal, made by village craftsmen. From the moment they are offered to a Thil or set upon an altar, they are thought to be living beings, able to protect humans and help them in many ways. Bateba range in size from a few inches to a few feet. Larger Bateba are placed upon village altars. Smaller figures. For personal use, are placed upon the household shrine, carried about in the clothin

Old Lobi African Bateba Statues Bêtise Wood Burkina Faso
Old Lobi Sacrificed Wood Bêtise Divination Couple-AFRICA An old and ritually sacrificed Lobi bateba mating couple possessing a superb plastic quality and striking realism. The nomenclature bêtise Lobi or bangala is abstractly given to this type of bateba by African dealers. As it is a rather simplistic manner in which to describe the mating bateba. Bateba are prescribed by the village fetisher who has been advised by the thila or protective village spirits. The bateba couple is intended for a man who may have difficulty in finding a female mate. This couple figure will be placed at the household altar or brought to the fetisher. Once the couple is placed at the altar. It becomes active. The Lobi household could have several altars dedicated for the placing of various and different thilbia- spirits incarnated as statuettes. There ... moremay be various stages prior to a thil being incarnated as a statue of wood, metal, or clay. The Lobi view the intermediary bateba figures on a level superior to human beings. Whom they resemble, but inferior to the thila from whom they derive their powers. It is noteworthy to mention that Lobi statuary sets itself aside from the majority of African statuary. In that there exists a large variety of forms and individualistic styles. Traces of sacrificial patina. Very minor age cracks- Collected in Burkina Faso. The Lobi are known for their sculptural dynamic figures with upraised arms called Batela Yadawara or sad Batela or Bateba Ti Puo(dangerous Bateba) Lobi carvers were inventive and apparently expressive in their sculptures. Diviners seek to determine the cause of events and to propitiate the spirits use Bateba figures contacting them through offerings and magical formulae. Recommended Reading: Giovanni Franco Scanzi. Interesting African "carved wood statue / dressed woman" (congo - lobi - art)
This is a beautiful African wooden statue of a woman. From circa early to mid 1900's. Hand carved to perfection as you can see in the pictures. She measures 10" 25cm tall. She has colorful tribal bead jewelry and is still in GREAT condition. A rusty brown color dress fits her well. So are the beats. The lady where I bought this statue from told me she picked her up in Congo(Africa) back in the 60's. This statue. As you can see is very old, but was well preserved in a beautiful home, filled up with art pieces from all over the world. This kept this piece safe and sound for all those years and it appears to be in perfect condition. I put the lighter in some pictures to give you a better idea regarding the size. This antique statue will be a wonderful addition to your world traveller ethnic home decor. Or will definitely give a ... moreglobal. Tribal touch to your more conventional decor. Feel free to ask me questions& good luck bidding on this'piece unique' from Africa.
