Vintage, Unique Lega Bwani Mask with 4 Eyes/10 1/2"H
Unique. Vintage Bwani mask, from the Lega people of Zaire(the Democratic Republic of the Congo) Wood with original, aged white, hardened pigment which is worn off the nose and brow areas of the face from age and use; 4 open, slit eyes; holes around edge with some type of flat plant material wrapped through them; rectangular mouth with serated teeth on the bottom, and seration as well inside the top of the four eyes; oval shaped mask but eyebrows give it the heart shape of traditional Lega masks; 10 1/2" H. A beautiful. Old, unusual, and I would guess rare"4 eye" mask that I haven't seen in my research of Lega material. I have seen several double face Lega masks and perhaps there is some relationship between these and the one mask with four eyes. Maybe someone more versed in Lega materia could answer this. Thanks in advance. ... moregsrx_vers_525(GS 6.6.5(525) RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d72f%2Bi%3Ahtpqto%3E%7B-14009627e6d-0x101-

Lega figures are called"iginga" and are said to express in visual forms the knowledge and codes of moral behavior in the Bwami society active among the Lega. This one with raised arms is known as Iginga Katanda. According to Daniel p. Biebuyck(1994. P.126) the term Katanda carries with it the identity of someone who is lazy and sexually promiscuous as can be seen by the holes in the body or the ‘mat’ torso. This figure represents the social disorder that a person with these qualities can inflect upon a people and the village and therefore is a reminder of good behavior and proper morals. The person is compared to the red ants. Called Katanda ke ibazi, that destroyed everything on their ways. Bwami is found at all levels as it binds Lega society and culture together. Each senior male will have a number of figures that are displayed or worn symbolically indicating moral and positive traits of behavior. The senior men will also mentor younger initiates. Incredibe LEGA Tribe Fetish Statue-D.R.Congo
INCREDIBLE, LEGA Tribe Fetish Statue(D.R.Congo) This unique piece with characteristic heart-shaped face and small mouth. Was used by‘Bwami’ Society members, in initiation ceremonies. Item Description Tribe: LEGA Tribe. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. The LEGA people live nearby the northern end of Lake Tanganyika on the banks of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and are also known as the Warega. Living in small village groups. Usually situated at the summit of a hill surrounded by a palisade and have no centralized authority but govern themselves through a communal association known as Bwami. The position of chief is held by the oldest member of the clan who must also hold the highest grade within Bwami society. The LEGA. Like many African societies, are organized into levels into which individuals progress ... moreas their age and wisdom increase. There are five levels in the society and the level that any individual has achieved is identifiable by the objects he is permitted to own. The highest level, the most accomplished and learned adults, are permitted to own small mask-like items to mark their status. The next level down is identified by ownership of maskettes. They are brought with their owners when the society meets. They can be worn attached to clothing, carried by a handle, or simply dragged by the raffia beard, which can be easily replaced. Their masks as well as statues are characterized by the small mouth which presumably relates to temperance in speech, the heart-shaped face and round scarification and many have traces of paint or white clay on them. The faces are rubbed with such white clay– pembe, each time that they are used and thereby acquire the white patination, that enhances expression. This statue is carved out of a single piece of hard-wood and it has rich. Glossy, brown patina except for a face which has white‘pembe’ on it. The body is covered with linear as well as dotted decorations(done with red hot iron) legs are short and stocky and feet pretty clumsy

Faux Ivory 19th Century African Fertility Fetish Lega Republic of The Congo
Interesting faux ivory 19th century African fertility symbol. At least that was what I was told by the previous owner. And that it was used for insertion into a woman to insure her fertility. I don't know if all that is true or not. An Ebay collector of African informs me it is Lega, from the Congo. It weighs a little over 135 grams and is 4 1/4" tall. It looks like an alien to me. Any educated information on it would be appreciated. Shipping is a flat $9.50 Priority insured in the US. Thanks for looking.
