Lega Idimu Mask- Democratic Republic of Congo Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Vegetal fibers, pigment, patina Height 22.8cm( 9in) without raffia collar ... moreKudi Gallery Collection. Provincetown, MA Ex-Private Collection. Naples, FL, 2006 Acquired at auction in Naples. Florida. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes In the 16th century the Lega began their long migration from modern day Uganda into their present location. They were a warlike people whose fierceness inspired those. With whom they came into contact, to adopt many Lega customs. In the 17th century they attacked the Rwandan outpost of Rutshurer on their way to Maniema, just west of Lake Tanganyika, dividing and conquering the people who lived in the region. Many cultural traits have been assimilated into the surrounding cultures, and the Lega still dominate the region today. The Bwami society is the context for the production of most Lega art work, which includes wooden statuettes and masks. Lega masks fall into the category of Bwami initiation objects. The Lega further divide them into five types according to material, size, and form: lukwakongo, kayam-ba, idimu, muminia, and lukungu(Biebuyck 1973,164) They serve as an important mark of rank, identifying the owners as members of specific Bwami levels. This serene Lega mask was formerly of a private Naples family collection. The auction specialist noted the consignor's father was an avid collector of African art and purchased the mask in 2006 from the Kudi Gallery in Provincetown. The mask has some minor age cracks and chips. All stable and typical of traditional use. Good condition. Appropriate for age, origin and medium. Reference a close example from the Fowler Museum Collection in Los Angeles. CA(see last photo or reference on the Fowler Museum Website) WE WILL SHIP WORLDWIDE* If you are outside the USA. This African mask belongs to the category of muminia, rarely encountered and very little represented in the collections of African art. Compared to lukwakongo ... moretype masks, this one has larger dimensions. These masks are used during the initiations leading to the second grade of the highest bwami of the lutumbo lwa yananio ranks. The guardian of this mask was an initiate of the highest level of the second highest grade of the Bwami. He belonged to the Banamusiga groups, a lineage group incorporated in the Beiankuku. This mask was an object of "collective ownership" as the only one of its kind in a large ritual community, comprising eight ritually related clans. This mask has been transmitted over several generations by narrow, direct and agnatic descent.

Clean geometry of primitive Lega masks. This unusual, hypnotic mask juxtaposes three nasal edges separating the eyelids, giving the illusion of three ... morefaces. Three mouths indicated by hollowed-out rectangles asymmetrically fill the lower area. This sculpted work indicated the stage that its holder had reached within the Bwami, a learning society composed of different grades, and which was joined by the wives whose spouse had reached the third level, that of the ngandu. Beautiful patina of abraded use, mate. At the Lea, the Bwami society open to men and women, organized social and political life. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, worn cloth, Additional Information: A finely carved face mask embellished with red and white paints. Its perimeter is surrounded with cotton cloth and plaited vegetal fibers The use of cotton cloth and the red paint are unusual for the Lwena. But the coffee-bean eyes, the pointed nose as well as the fine mouth are of Lwena style. Isolated groups of Lwena have historically settled alongside, and mingled with, villages in the southern DRC, so it is not too surprising to see one of their African masks display sparse Congo minimalism more aligned to the Lega and Lele than the artistically formal Angolan groups, like the Chockwe. This attribution is by no means a given, but the charm and surprising power of this African mask is undeniable. It is a fascinating example of the profound and far-reaching influence of masking traditions from the southern Congo. This mask would add some colors to a collection. The Lwena people. Neighbors of the well-known Chokwe people, share much with the Chokwe in the forms of their art and culture, however Lwena art is less varied consisting primarily of masks and female figures. For example the complex facial markings combine Chokwe patterns with added Lwena variations. 87081* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add U

The Lega do not possess a centralized political organization, and both men and women aspire to moral authority by gaining high rank in the Bwami association. They live in the autonomous villages collectively situated at the summit of a hill surrounded by a palisade. They practice a mixed economy involving agriculture, hunting and fishing. Division of labor is gender based and akin to the economic patterns of other tribes living in the forest environment. Men hunt and clear new land and women cultivate manioc and other crops. The function of the Bwami is to regulate the social, religious, and political life of the Lega. It is conveying ethical principles and establishing social norms. Circumcision was an indispensable process that allowed entrance into the Bwami. It was accompanied by the teaching of proverbs and instruction in the handling of objects endowed with moral and practical significance. The Bwami was divided into several levels. To pass to the next level, a series of initiations, gifts, and payments were needed; and this mean

AUTHENTIC AFRICAN TRIBAL ART PRIMITIVE LEGA MASK from ZAIRE / D.R. CONGO 1987
I acquired this mask in Zaire(now renamed to the Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1987. Dimensions: approx. 11 ½" long. 7" wide, 4" deep. Weight approx. 1 lb 7 oz. During the time I worked and lived in Liberia I started collecting African art. Both traditional and contemporary, I continued enlarging my collection when, few years later, I returned to work in Africa, in Zaire(now Democratic Republic of Congo) I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. All such items, which I am selling now on Ebay, were either purchased by me or received as gifts from ... moremy coworkers or missionaries I worked with while in Africa. RARE VINTAGE PIN : LEGA NORD symbol politician - Foundation, December 4, 1989
RARE VINTAGE PIN LEGA NORD symbol politician Foundation. December 4, 1989 SOME HISTORY The Northern League almost never claims ethnic reasons for the independence of Padania. But the indigenous speeches of Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto, Trentino, northern Marches, of parts of Friuli-Venezia Giulia(on the southern coast, in the west and the east of the region) of the Aosta Valley(at least two non-Franco-Provençal speaking communes: Verrès and Pont-Saint-Martin) and of northern Tuscany(Lunigiana, Garfagnana other areas bordering with Emilia-Romagna, and the enclave of the commune of Camaiore) plus those, spoken outside the Italian State, of the Principality of Monaco, San Marino, Canton Ticino, southern Grisons, Istria and in the politically French territory from the Italian border to Monaco are- according to ... morescholars like H. Lausberg, whose classification of Romance languages is the most widely accepted- dialects of one language. He called it, obviously without meaning that it's a part of the Italian linguistic system, Northern Italian" using a word easy to be misunderstood, but in 1982, before that the Northern League was born, the linguist G. Hull named it"Padanian" and the land where it's spoken"Padania" in"The Linguistic Unity of Northern Italy and Rhaetia"unpublished thesis presented at the University of Sydney) However most Northern League supporters don't know this and this party puts Italian(and other languages) speaking areas into its state project, like central and southern Tuscany, where standard Italian originated. Moreover, here is the URL of a site(in Italian and Padanian) where the meaning of the word"Padania" VERY INTERESTING and SPECIAL!
Lega Zoomorphic Mask, Estate Purchase
A charming and well-made zoomorphic mask from the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. With signs of use. The rendering of the eyes shows some Bembe influence, which means the piece likely comes from the southern Lega. I purchased this piece from a Montreal estate reseller. This mask measures 11 1/2 inches tall, 7 inches across, and 4 1/2 inches deep. The stand is for photography only and is not included in the sale. International bidders are welcome. But I require that they pay via Paypal.

AUTHENTIC AFRICAN TRIBAL ART LEGA BWAMI MASK 10" from ZAIRE / D.R. CONGO 1986
I purchased this mask in Zaire(now renamed to the Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1986. I do not know when it was made but it did look old when I purchased it. Lega Bwami Society Figure, African Arts, African Statues
Item: Lega Male Bwami Society Figure Specifications: 33 x 12.5 x 9 cm Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo. see ethnographical notes below) Medium: Timber Carving& kaolin clay paint LEGA(BALEGA. BALEGGA, REGA, WALEGA, WAREGA) Democratic Republic of the Congo The 100.000 to 250,000 Lega inhabit the virgin forest of eastern DRC, between the great lakes and the Lualaba River, next to Luba people. The Lega do not possess a centralized political organization. And both men and women aspire to moral authority by gaining high rank in the bwami association. They live in the autonomous villages collectively situated at the summit of a hill surrounded by a palisade. They practice a mixed economy involving agriculture. Hunting and fishing. Division of labor is gender based and akin to the economic patterns of other tribes living in the forest environment: ... moremen hunt and clear new land and women cultivate manioc and other crops. To pass to the next level. A series of initiations, gifts, and payments were needed; and this meant that one had attained a certain wisdom and acquired a personal moral sense. The great ceremonies organized for the accession to the highest level would require that entire villages be constructed to house the clan of the candidate and members of the other clans who often came from very far away to participate in the festivities. The objects are frequently moved around in various containers and grouped in large number for ceremonial displays; for this reason, there is no large Lega art. All Lega art is used within the context of the bwami society. Originally Lega art was primarily wooden

WONDERFUL FETISH - FETICHE LEGA - CONGO AFRICAN TRIBAL ART.
Rare and small object of witch doctor. Petit objet de féticheur. Origin Congo Ethnie LEGA. H: 6.9" Hauteur: 17.5 cm.
Lega Bwami Figure, Approx 25" High (Congo)
Could anything be more elegant and serene than this Lega figure? Quite tall at over 2 feet high. The lanky body is in no way stick-like as are some East African figures of this type, but a succession of rich curves cascading downwaed to earth. The legs are relaxed, flexed with a sense of springy life. Dabs of white pigment have been used to bring the figure further to life. This is an ancestral figure. He clasps his belly in an embrace that includes his progeny. His progenitive role is emphasized by the navel and phallus. Both essential to the balance of the piece; they remind us that he(like all of us) is part of a line of descent. Statues of this sort were owned by high- ranking members of the bwami cult and were in a sense teaching observers about dignity. Serenety and moral probidity. This is an outstanding fine work of art in any culture. ... moreThe product of a master carver. di,RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d72f%2Bishhov%3C%3Edi-14978a9e7d0-0x10e-

This one is without arms and legs and the torso restes on a cylindric. Among the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of Congo carved wooden figures are used during ceremonies of the Bwami Society. An initiation, and instructional society that governs and advises on moral and ethical conduct. The complex system of instruction, initiation, and advancement for both men and women in the Bwami society uses masks and figures to document the various levels of Bwami and to serve as badges validating the initiate’s knowledge of the secrets of Bwami and of their rank. This appealing white faced figure with a marvelously abstracted body represents a major figure and perhaps a ‘judge’ among senior members of the Bwami Society. Lega sculptures are usually carved in a highly distinctive style, with a heart-shaped concave face with a slightly bulging forehead, slit ‘coffee-bean’ eyes and an open narrow mouth. Figures may be completely covered with white clay called ‘pembe’ or simply as in this figure have the face highlighted through the use of coloring material. Recommended Read

LEGA AFRICAN TRIBAL MASK WOOD TRIBAL AFRICAN ART 37 CM BY 26 CM. A little bit more information on Lega people:The 100.000 to 250,000 Lega inhabit the virgin forest of eastern DRC, between the great lakes and the Lualaba River, next to Luba people. Division of labor is gender based and akin to the economic patterns of other tribes living in the forest environment: men hunt and clear new land and women cultivate manioc and other crops. The function of the bwami is to regulate the social, religious, and political ... morelife of the Lega. It is conveying ethical principles and establishing social norms. Circumcision was an indispensable process that allowed entrance into the bwami. It was accompanied by the teaching of proverbs and instruction in the handling of objects endowed with moral and practical significance. The bwami was divided into several levels. To pass to the next level, a series of initiations, gifts, and payments were needed; and this meant that one had attained a certain wisdom and acquired a personal moral sense.
