Lega Mask Idimu Bwami Society DR Congo African
Title, Lega Mask Idimu Bwami Society African Congo, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Lega, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 9.75 Inches, Overall Condition, Good: Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Scratches on the surface and the back. Chips on the rim to the back, Additional Information: Lega sculptures are usually carved in a highly distinctive style. With a heart-shaped concave face with a slightly ... morebulging forehead, slit ‘coffee-bean’ eyes and an open narrow mouth. This mask shows long use and much wear with remnants of color defining the face and enhancing its overall design. Lega masks such as this are known as Idimu, sharing with other Lega masks general characteristics. However this Idimu mask most likely belongs to a Kindi, a senior member of Bwami. The complex system of instruction, initiation, and advancement for both men and women in the Bwami society uses masks and figures to document the various levels of Bwami and to serve as badges validating the initiate’s knowledge of the secrets of Bwami and of their rank. Through time Bwami initiates earn the privilege to wear and display masks that might be worn on their arms or faces or simply exposed on racks or on the ground indicating their rank before other Bwami society members. For the Lega the ultimate goal is to reach the uppermost level of Bwami where one would be recognized as a Kindi, a leader and also a moral and social authority to be honored with the right to wear or carry certain masks. 74670* All content. Congo: Old Tribal used African Protection figure from the Lega.
Large Old and Rare Tribal us. Congo: Old Tribal used African Protection figure from the Lega. Hand carved from wood. With color pigments. Height: 19 cm. ed African mask from Igbo. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These ... moresocieties exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. Proportions are true to

African tribal Lega figure -------- Tribal Eye Gallery ---------
After many years of collecting and selling tribal art. I have amassed a large body of work and have now opened an Ebay gallery. With an artistic background, I feel I have a good eye for quality. The majority of this tribal art has been gathered from extensive searches throughout Europe and from the many contacts I have built up over the years. If you would like to enquire about areas of interest that you cannot see in the gallery. Please contact me. Until I know the exact location. I am only able to give a' guesstimate' in my listing. This Lega figure. Republic of Congo(formerly Zaire) is circa mid 20 th century. Possibly earlier. There are feathers rising from the top of the head. Above a heart-shaped face which is coated in pigmentation. Vegetable fibre is wrapped around the neck and below this is a metal hoop. There are old redundant ... morewormholes and wear to the wood. But the piece is solid. Measures-19.5 inches/ 48 centimetres tall plus- 5 inches/ 13 centimetres for the feathers Please contact me if you require delivery costs to your location. Postage costs obviously vary. Depending on where the item is due to be sent, so, please understand, until I know the exact location, I am only able to give a' guesstimate' in my listing. Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo(see ethnographical notes below) Provenance: Private Collection. Melbourne, Australia. About The Lega Tribe The 100.000 to 250,000 Lega inhabit the virgin forest of eastern DRC, between the great lakes and the Lualaba River, next to Luba people. The Lega do not possess a centralized political organization, and both men and women aspire to moral authority by gaining high rank in the bwami association. They live in the autonomous villages collectively situated at the summit of a hill surrounded by a palisade. They practice a mixed economy involving agriculture. Hunting and fishing. Division of labor is gender based and akin to the economic patterns of other tribes living in the forest environment: ... moremen hunt and clear new land and women cultivate manioc and other crops. The function of the bwami is to regulate the social. Religious, and political life of the Lega. It is conveying ethical principles and establishing social norms. Circumcision was an indispensable process that allowed entrance into the bwami. It was accompanied by the teaching of proverbs and instruction in the handling of objects endowed with moral and practical significance. The bwami was divided into several levels. To pass to the next level. A series of initiations, gifts, and payments were needed; and this meant that one had attained a certain wisdom and acquired a personal moral sense. The great ceremonies organized for the accession to the highest level would require that entire villages be constructed to house the clan of the candidate and members of the other clans who often came from very far away to participate in the festivities. The objects are frequently moved around in various containers and grouped in large number for ceremonial displays; for this reason. There is no large Lega art. Originally Lega art was primarily wooden. But little by little, ivory came into use. Later ma
