ANTIQUE LEGA WOOD CARVED FIGURES FROM CONGO
These come from a large estate of African art and were collected in the 1950's. I am not sure of the exact tribal attribution but according to the auction info these are from the Ivory Coast region of Africa and are around 100 years old. I am not an expert on African art so this is the best I can do with a description at this point other than saying that there are a few small environmental cracks in the wood and a small chip in the female figures head dress. The wood is heavy and strong though and has a nice even patina. The tallest of the two pieces stands approximately 12 inches tall. These have such wonderful personality and both stand on their own. They almost look alive at times! Very interesting pieces of art. I can see why Picasso was so taken by these types of carvings! Thanks for looking. Please see all photos for best description ... moreI can offer on these. And please ask if you have any questions I may be able to answer.

Pair of Lega Tribal Ancestor Figures Probably 19th Century
A Good Pair of Lega Tribal Kneeling Ancestor Figures in Dark Patinated Hardwood. Probably 19th Century This is a great pair of kneeling ancestor figures. Most probably Lega Tribe and probably late 19th Century or early 20th Century- The male figure has a long beard and that the female has a deep collar These came from a collection, mostly of good 18th century Chinese ceramics and, perhaps strangely, some 19th and early 20th century African tribal pieces. Each figure is carved in a kneeling position and each has hands clasped to the front. The male, around his beard, the female around her waist. The hollow gently curved carved shafts are plugged at each end and contain some form of rattling material- these are not in any way loud. They just do rattle- but not always. They are not made in a single piece, rather, the base of the male figure ... moreis a separate piece and the female consists of head torso and base in three pieces. They are dark stained or patinated. The material is a very hard wood Each has a height of approx 13.7 cm. They are in good used condition. With wear to the patination as can be seen. There is no restoration. Please study the close up pictures below for full details. Shipping within the UK is 5 GBP. Shipping to Europe is 7 GBP. Shipping to the US is 12 GBP The buyer pays full shipping costs. Payment by Bank Transfer. Visa/Mastercard, UK personal cheque in Pounds Sterling. Shipping subject to clearance. Info about Lega people: The Lega people(or Warega) are an ethnic group of the Democratic Republic of the ... moreCongo. As of 1998 their population was about 250.000. The Lega people traditionally live in small village groups. With no central authority. Within a community, a chief inherits his position on a patrilineal basis, and his close relatives have highest rank. Counterbalancing this hereditary structure, the Bwami society also regulates social and political life. This society has seven levels for men and four for women and is open to all. An initiate advances through the ranks through a complex system of instruction, payment and initiation, achieving increasing status. A member of the highest level is recognized as a Kindi, a social leader with great moral authority. The Lega people are polytheistic. Their gods include Kalaga. The promiser; Kenkunga, the reassembler; Ombe, the hidden; Kaginga, the incarnation of evil. Kaginga assists sorcerers, but Bwami membership can protect an individual against the evil doings of witches. Figures like this one are used during ceremonies of the Bwami Society. An initiation, and instructional society that govern and advise on moral and ethical conduct. The complex system of instruction, initiation, and advancement for both men and women in the Bwam

Pigment, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 18 inches H. x 5 inches W. Overall Condition, Fair. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, bad crack in face. Cracks in head and torso, crack to the back, scratches in places Additional Information: The arts of the Lega(Warega) are well-known ... moreby collectors. And highly regarded for their naive, abstract appeal. The bulk of Lega artistic output is reserved for use by and for members of the"Bwami" Society.Figures representing humans, like this small"iginga, complete with short arms and hands, with tooth, are rare. These small figures, used in the higher levels of Bwami, are normally much more abstract. Bwami is a complex organization consisting of multiple levels, and is open to both men and women. It forms the essential component of political, social, and religious life. Within Bwami, artworks are used in conjunction with proverbs, anecdotes, and performances to form complex, layered metaphors which teach moral values. For examples of"iginga, see Cornet's A SURVEY OF ZAIREAN ART-THE BRONSON COLLECTION. According to Cornet, These figurines are often part of an initiation basket owned collectively by a clan, and used in the ritual display of objects in the LUTUMBO LWA KINDI rite. This association is composed of male and female members who strive to achieve advancement in the various ranks of Bwami in which advancement is dependent upon the initiates ... morepassing through a number of ranks to achieve status and prestige and recognition as moral individuals. For the Lega the ultimate goal is to reach the uppermost level of Bwami where one would be recognized as a Kindi. One who exercises moral suasion and is a leader in society. The complex system of instruction, initiation and advancement in Bwami uses masks and figures to document the various levels of Bwami and to serve as badges validating the initiate s knowledge of the secrets of Bwami and of their rank. Wolfz-Gallery African Lega Rare Hand Mask Measurement(inches) Height: 11.25; Width: 7; Depth: 5.25. Weight: 1 lbs. 1 ozs. Materials: Wood and pigment Condition: For the condition see the pictures. Description: Wolfz-Gallery African Lega Mask. Note: Rare handle on rear of mask- it is held in hand while danced in tribal ceremonies. Additional Info. The 100.000 to 250,000 Lega inhabit the virgin forest of eastern DRC, between the great lakes and the Lualaba River, next to Luba people. The Lega do not possess a centralized political organization, and both men and women aspire to moral authority by gaining high rank in the bwami association. They live in the autonomous villages collectively situated at the summit of a hill surrounded by a palisade. They practice a mixed economy involving agriculture, hunting and fishing. Division of labor is gender ... morebased and akin to the economic patterns of other tribes living in the forest environment: men hunt and clear new land and women cultivate manioc and other crops. The function of the bwami is to regulate the social, religious, and political life of the Lega. It is conveying ethical principles and establishing social norms. Circumcision was an indispensable process that allowed entrance into the bwami. It was accompanied by the teaching of proverbs and instruction in the handling of objects endowed with moral and practical significance. The bwami was divided into several levels. To pass to the next level, a series of initiations, gifts, and payments were needed; and this meant that one had attained a certain wisdom and acquired a personal moral sense. The great ceremonies organized for the accession to the highest level would require that entire villages be constructed to house the clan of the candidate and members of the other clans who often came from very far away to participate in the festivities. The objects are frequently moved around in various containers and grouped in large number for ceremonial displays; for this reason, there is no large Lega art. Note: Mask/

PAIR OF AFRICAN-STYLE TALL BOOKENDS - BOBO MBUTI LEGA KWELE MANGBETU TANZANIA
A appealing pair of tall. Approx. 17" African or African-style bookends acquired at an estate liquidation. Bookends are not identical(reverse or mirror images) and can be used or displayed individually. They do complement one another nicely. Though, and work perfectly, especially with XL and/or tall books that are often problematic in shelves or on desktops. The bottoms of these bookends have a cork underlayment to protect furniture surfaces and prevent slippage. They are lightweight. The pair totaling no more than 2.5 to 3 lbs. My guess is that the bookends are faux African rather than authentic African tribal pieces. But I am no expert on the subject and make no guarantees either way. One plus is that I have yet to encounter another bookend or set of bookends identical to these; I am reasonably confident that these are individually ... morehand-crafted and not mass-produced pieces. What I can state with absolute certainty is that these bookends are both pleasing to the eye and functional(they work great! Bobo, Medje/ Mangbetu. Kwele. Mbuti. Lega and Tanzanian are just a few African tribal peoples/cultures whose artwork(wood carvings. Sculptures, masks, and more) seems to gel with the look and features of these bookends. However, I can not be certain which, if any, of these specific cultures is represented by these"sitting men" bookends. Maybe YOU will take up the reins. Good luck bidding on this attractive& fun pair of African-style bookends! U.S. bidders/buyers only. Please. We do not ship internationally or overseas. Sorry.
LEGA FIGURE - DROC
Lega Figure. DROC All Lega art in Western collections was once owned and used within the structure of the Bwami society. A voluntary association for men and women. The Lega peoples are unified not by chiefs but by Bwami, which cuts across clans and territories. The society safeguards the moral and social code necessary for the Lega to live together in harmony. A first encounter with a work of Lega art can have meaning for any viewer. In addition to the impressive grace and sophistication of the abstracted sculptural forms. There is something inexplicably understandable in the smooth, buttery surfaces of the expressive features of a carved wood face. To the Western viewer, the gesture or posture of a figure may communicate notions that seem familiar yet hard to put into words. When the members of the Bwami society needed a sculpture carved ... morewould give the artist the requirements for the statue and the artist would have a great deal of artistic freedom in determining the final appearance of the object. Many figures have a varied degree of form and style. And unless the original context of the object was known it is impossible to determine its specific use or function. This fine example measure 12.5 inches tall and 4.25 inches wide. It will be shipped on this custom wooden stand.
