They were a warlike people whose fierceness inspired those. With whom they came into contact, to adopt many Lega customs. In the 17th century they attacked the Rwandan outpost of Rutshurer on their way to Maniema, just west of Lake Tanganyika, dividing and conquering the people who lived in the region. Many cultural traits have been assimilated into the surrounding cultures, and the Lega still dominate the region today. The Bwami society is the context for the production of most Lega art work, which includes wooden statuettes and masks. Lega masks fall into the category of Bwami initiation objects. Item is a mask carving from West Central Africa- possibly the Congo It was given to me by an African friend in the 1980s Item was old when I got it-19th or 20th century. Rare old Bena Lulua Mask with headdress. The Lulua(luluwa) people are in fact a collection of small groups whose home bordered by the larger Luba state and the related and. With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. With a heart-shaped concave face with a slightly ... morebulging forehead, slit âcoffee-beanâ eyes and an open narrow mouth. This mask shows long use and much wear with remnants of color defining the face and enhancing its overall design. Lega masks such as this are known as Idimu, sharing with other Lega masks general characteristics. However this Idimu mask most likely belongs to a Kindi, a senior member of Bwami. The complex system of instruction, initiation, and advancement for both men and women in the Bwami society uses masks and figures to document the various levels of Bwami and to serve as badges validating the initiateâs knowledge of the secrets of Bwami and of their rank. Through time Bwami initiates earn the privilege to wear and display masks that might be worn on their arms or faces or simply exposed on racks or on the ground indicating their rank before other Bwami society members. The Yela as well as the Mbole. Komo, Jonga. Lengole, and Metoko belong to the Central-Eastern Equatorial Forest stylistic region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As for their northern neighbors, the Mbole, the art among the Yela is centered around Lilwa association. Figures are geometric and have the usually forest heart-shaped face. The most known ones depict hanging men figures which are the central carvings in this association and found among both the Yela and Mbole. Little is known about the Yela masks. The use and function of the Yela masks are unknown. According to Marc Felix, Yela masks belong to the Ekanga secret society and are kept in a special basket in the meeting lodge of this very secret society. In the 16th century the Lega began their long migration from modern day Uganda into their present location. They were a warlike people whose fierceness inspired those. With whom they came into contact, to adopt many Lega customs. In the 17th century they attacked the Rwandan outpost of Rutshurer on their way to Maniema, just west of Lake Tanganyika, dividing and conquering the people who lived in the region. Many cultural traits have been assimilated into the surrounding cultures, and the Lega still dominate ... morethe region today. The Bwami society is the context for the production of most Lega art work, which includes wooden statuettes and masks. Lega masks fall into the category of Bwami initiation objects. The Lega further divide them into five types according to material, size, and form: lukwakongo, kayam-ba, idimu, muminia, and lukungu(Biebuyck 1973,164) They serve as an important mark of rank, identifying the owners as members of specific Bwami levels. This serene Lega mask was formerly of a private Naples family collection. The auction specialist noted the consignor's father was an avid collector of African art and purchased the mask in 2006 from the Brenner Collection. Two squared eyes and an open mouth. The simplicity of the face is countered by the dramatic two animal horns ending in human heads. In most Kayamba masks the horns are simple shapes but here the artist choose to embellish the horns with heads. Kayamba masks appear in a number of localized traditions and were used to illustrate proverbs or sayings and during performances with music. Among the Lega masks serve the Bwami Society, an initiation, and instructional society that governs and advises on moral and ethical conduct. There are a number of holes surrounding the edges of the mask that would have had grasses or a costume attached to it. If the Kayamba attribution is correct this is indeed an uncommon mask. Chips and scratches in places, Additional Information: The Lega people live nearby the northern end of Lake Tanganyika on the banks of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and are also known as the Warega. Living in small village groups they have no centralized authority but govern themselves through a communal association known as Bwami. This association is composed of male and female members who strive to achieve advancement in the various ranks of Bwami in which advancement is dependent upon the initiates ... morepassing through a number of ranks to achieve status and prestige and recognition as moral individuals. For the Lega the ultimate goal is to reach the uppermost level of Bwami where one would be recognized as a Kindi. One who exercises moral suasion and is a leader in society. The complex system of instruction, initiation and advancement in Bwami uses masks and figures to document the various levels of Bwami and to serve as badges validating the initiate s knowledge of the secrets of Bwami and of their rank. Initiates earn the privilege to wear and display masks that might be worn on their arms or faces or simply exposed on racks or on the ground to other Bwami society members indicating their rank. Lega masks are usually carved in a distinctive style. With a heart-shaped concave face with a slightly protruding forehead, a narrow nose, slit eyes and a slightly open mouth. The faces of the masks are rubbed with white clay(pembe) each time that they are used and thereby acquire the white pagination that color the face and enhance the various decorative designs as in this mask of dots around the face with lines under the eyes.
