Lega Bwami Passport Mask. Lega people, Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire. Lega masks of this type were used as initiation objects in the Bwani ... moresociety. They were not worn on the face but either hand held or attached to a fence or a wall. Wood w/ kaolin pigment; Rafia attached to the bottom; 6" L. without rafia. Great"Picasso" look to this! Mask. And a few others I will be listing, came from the collection/estate of a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer in African art and other ethnographic material. I was told that he had been collecting African art since the 1960's, and much of his collection was donated to various museums. I was lucky to be able to acquire a nice collection of the passport masks. gsrx_vers_418(GS 6.0.6(418)

Damage/Repair, worn cloth, Additional Information: A finely carved face mask embellished with red and white paints. Its perimeter is surrounded with cotton cloth and plaited vegetal fibers The use of cotton cloth and the red paint are unusual for the Lwena. But the coffee-bean eyes, the pointed nose as well as the fine mouth are of Lwena style. Isolated groups of Lwena have historically settled alongside, and mingled with, villages in the southern DRC, so it is not too surprising to see one of their African masks display sparse Congo minimalism more aligned to the Lega and Lele than the artistically formal Angolan groups, like the Chockwe. This attribution is by no means a given, but the charm and surprising power of this African mask is undeniable. It is a fascinating example of the profound and far-reaching influence of masking traditions from the southern Congo. This mask would add some colors to a collection. The Lwena people. Neighbors of the well-known Chokwe people, share much with the Chokwe in the forms of their art and culture, however Lwena art is less varied consisting primarily of masks and female figures. For example the complex facial markings combine Chokwe patterns with added Lwena variations. 87081* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add U

Lega Idimu Mask- Democratic Republic of Congo Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Vegetal fibers, pigment, patina Height 22.8cm( 9in) without raffia collar ... moreKudi Gallery Collection. Provincetown, MA Ex-Private Collection. Naples, FL, 2006 Acquired at auction in Naples. Florida. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes In the 16th century the Lega began their long migration from modern day Uganda into their present location. They were a warlike people whose fierceness inspired those. With whom they came into contact, to adopt many Lega customs. In the 17th century they attacked the Rwandan outpost of Rutshurer on their way to Maniema, just west of Lake Tanganyika, dividing and conquering the people who lived in the region. Many cultural traits have been assimilated into the surrounding cultures, and the Lega still dominate the region today. The Bwami society is the context for the production of most Lega art work, which includes wooden statuettes and masks. Lega masks fall into the category of Bwami initiation objects. The Lega further divide them into five types according to material, size, and form: lukwakongo, kayam-ba, idimu, muminia, and lukungu(Biebuyck 1973,164) They serve as an important mark of rank, identifying the owners as members of specific Bwami levels. This serene Lega mask was formerly of a private Naples family collection. The auction specialist noted the consignor's father was an avid collector of African art and purchased the mask in 2006 from the Kudi Gallery in Provincetown. The mask has some minor age cracks and chips. All stable and typical of traditional use. Good condition. Appropriate for age, origin and medium. Old Bena Lulua Mask with Headdress. Songye Yoruba Luba Baule Dan Lega Yaka
Rare old Bena Lulua Mask with headdress. The Lulua(luluwa) people are in fact a collection of small groups whose home bordered by the larger Luba state and the related and. With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. Stand not included. Thanks for looking!

In the 16th century the Lega began their long migration from modern day Uganda into their present location. Many cultural traits have been assimilated into the surrounding cultures, and the Lega still dominate ... morethe region today. The auction specialist noted the consignor's father was an avid collector of African art and purchased the mask in 2006 from the Brenner Collection.
