Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the ... moremasks are representative of spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. The energy and existence of these spirits is said to exist deep in the forest where the trees grow tall and dense. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated from the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. You will be bidding on a vintage hand carved wooden African mask. It is carved from one piece of two-toned mahogony. This mask was purchased in Kenya in the early 1990s. It is a shiny. Smooth reddish-brown with a light brown natural strip on each side. This mask measures about 15" by about 5 1/2" The eyes have slits that go through as well as the mouth, so a person could breathe and see with the mask up to their face. This mask would be held to the face by hand rather than any kind of strap. It has a man intricately carved on the forehead as a decoration. OLD AFRICAN BAULE IV COAST WOOD MASK CROWN
For sale is an old African Baule painted and carved wood mask from the IV Coast. It is approx 13" L X 4” D& 6" W and weighs 493 grams. It has what looks like crown(faded blue color) with a comb in it(natural wood) on top of the head. The patina definitely has some age to it and I believe it is mid 20th c. Mid Century - African Wooden Tribal Mask - Handcrafted
This is a very light weight. Mid century, African tribal mask. It came from my uncle's estate. He was a pilot and traveled extensively and purchased nice mementos as he did so. This wooden mask weighs less than 4 ounces making it easy to hang. It is nicely detailed around the eyes and on the crown. Since it was on display in his home, there are two small holes in the back of the mask that were used for picture hangers. There appears to be a slight dent in the wood on the chin of the mask. It may just be a wood flaw. Overall nice condition considering age. Please see the photos for details. Quite striking and very unique.

LARGE OLD AFRICAN BAULE IV COAST PAINTED CARVED WOOD MASK
For sale is a large old African Baule painted and carved wood mask from the IV Coast. It is approx 30" L X 5" D& 6 1/4" W. It has what looks like a bird& some species of ungulate on top of the head and a snake head on the bottom of the mask. The patina definitely has some age to it and I believe it is mid 20th c. It is in very good condition with some minor paint loss due to age which can be seen in the photos. There are no repairs which is unusual for a mask of this length and age. It is uniquely Marka by the brass sheet covering the face and by its delightful curve shape and design. Ntomo is originally a Bamana initiation association taken over by the Malinke for boys several years before their circumcision and admittance into adulthood. It is the beginning of formal education. Where youths learn the rudiments of social and spiritual life and begin to develop as individual social beings. Janko is a similar initiatory organization for girls. Ntomo maskers wear simple cotton costumes, sometimes with raffia attached and test one another by striking each other with sticks to develop forbearance in future life. Certain features of the mask are symbolically interpreted: the small mouth indicates the value of silence or of thinking before speaking; the long nose expresses the metaphorical capacity to smell the good and bad qualities in people. The carving at the top of the forehead reaching down to the side of the face represent womenâs hair with U shaped forms indicating the ears at the sides of the eyes. They are also known as the Warega. Living in small village groups. They have no centralized authority, but govern themselves through a communal association known as"Bwami. This association is composed of male and female members, who strive to advance up through the various ranks of Bwami, a long process which involves challenges as well as proof of knowledge. The ultimate goal for the initiate ... moreis to reach the highest level. And become a"Kindi, a position of power, prestige and influence with the village. It is during the various Bwami ceremonies that the charming and popular heart-faced masks are used. The masks are transported in baskets from village to village by high-ranking elders. Lega masks are usually carved in a distinctive style, with a heart-shaped, concave face, slightly protruding forehead, narrow nose, slit eyes and a slightly open mouth, often with a rather surprised and charming expression. The surfaces of the masks are rubbed with kaolin/pembe each time they are used, and thus acquire their striking white appearance.
