BACKGROUND The Fang constitute a vast mosaic of village communities. Established in a large zone of Atlantic equatorial Africa comprising Cameroon, continental Equatorial Guinea and nearly the whole north of Gabon. Historically the Fang were itinerant, and it is relatively recently that they have settled into this broad area. The Ngil masks are tied to the association of Ngil, which played judiciary and political roles among the Fang, assuring peace and hunting witches. These masks had the task of punishing those guilty of vices and criminals. The characteristics of the face do not express a composed serenity, but the deformation of anatomic characteristics reveals its superhuman character. This character is also reasserted by the use of white; for the Fang it is the color of death and of spirits. The accentuated vertical development of the mask is underlined by the long line of the nose. The calm expression of the Ngil, masks stands in striking contrast to the extremely frightening, threatening character of the masked performers who only performed at night in the light of torches. These masks were a part of paraphernalia of a hierarchically-structured male society

TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The Age of Louis XVI by Alvar ... moreGonzalez Palacios. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 158 pages. Publisher: Paul Hamlyn; 1969) The arts during the reign of Louis XV were a perfect reflection of the exuberant spirit of the times. The leader of this eighteenth century“permissive society” was Madame de Pompadour. The King’s mistress. She had a decisive influence on the arts, as on everything else, giving them, as the author remarks, just that exquisitely graceful and feminine touch which still fascinates us today” This feminine touch is best seen in the asymmetrical swirling lines of the Rococo style which dominated the decorative arts in the first half of the eighteen century. Whorls appeared on the magnificent furniture as lavish ormolu mounts on commodes and writing tables. And on the silver candlesticks and entrée dishes that twist and twirl. Even Boucher’s coy nudes are painted with the same voluptuous contortions. The splendid illustrations bring out the vitality and charm of all the arts; painting. Sculpture, architecture, furniture, porcelain, tapestries and silver; while the author, Alvar Gonzalez-Palacios fills in the fascinating background of the period. CONDITION: Lightly read hardcover in price-clipped dustjacket. Hamlyn/Cameo(1969) 158 pages. Pages are pristine; clean. Crisp, unmutilated, and tightly bound; except that the front and back endpapers show slight age toning/tanning from contact with the dustjacket. Looks like the book was read once or twice, then put on a bookshelf, forgotten. Cloth covers are immaculate. Dustjacket shows mild edge and corner shelfwear including a diagonal one inch tear(neatly mended) at the top edge of the back side. The dustjacket's spine is also somewhat sun-faded, and the inside, lower corner of the front side of the jacket is price-clipped(a tiny corner cut out of the inside flap so the publisher's price no longer shows(as if it was

Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. ... moreI love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey mask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer. Title, Luba-Hemba Male Figure Holding Bowl Bearer DR Congo African Miniature, Type of Object, carving. Figure, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic ... moreof Congo, People, Luba-Hemba, Materials, Wood Approximate Age, 20th Century, Dimensions, Height is 11 inches, Overall Condition, good, Damage/Repair, crack in base, Additional Information: This standing male figure holding a bowl comes from the Luba-Hemba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The figure recalls the famous bowl bearers from the Luba-Hemba. But the theme of bearer with bowl is common to the Luba and related peoples such as the Zela and Songye. The rerepresentation of male is very rare among the Luba. This could imply the figure was made by a Hemba artist and for use by the Hemba. Among the Hemba such figures are considered representation of ancestors. Among the Luba-Hemba. The bearer figure play the role of intermediaries between the living and the Vidye spirits of the spirit world. TThe function of the figure is to call. Beg or implore these spirits to protect, rescue and assist the living. The Vidye spirits speak through the mouth of the bear figure. Through these sculptures the diviner calls for the help and assistance of the Vidye spirits, the divinities of the divinations. Recommended Reading: Francois Neyt. Lovely Baule African Mask I .Coast
Lovely African Baule Mask I.Coast approx 14" h by 6" shows old termite treated holes the overall Good condition Additional Information: This mask from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast belongs to a special grouping known as ‘portrait masks’. Called “ndoma” by the Baule. Portrait are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as “Mblo”. It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. There are no holes around the mask(except for two recent holes on the top used for hanging the mask) which means the mask was not wore on the face, but probably has a headpiece or a wall mask. The “Mbola” ... moredance reflects feminine virtues, elegant dancing steps and celebrates her beauty. These masks are danced to entertain during days that the Baule do not work and they will also appear to honor important visitors to the village. The refined and finally carved face may be similar to the person for whom the mask was originally carved to represent. The closed eyes and pursed mouth indicate propriety and respect in keeping the eyes downcast with a sense of reserve that a mature woman will cultivate. The slight scarification along the eyes and mouth and on the forehead may be for magical purposes for an aesthetic statement. The costume would have been attached to the mask by cords that was threaded through the holes at the back of the mask. a;06d2.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp73%28%3Ea%3B06d2-13e90a7655f-0xf4-

The Igbo ethnic group inhabit a heavily forested region of south-western Nigeria. And subsist via farming, merchant trading, hunting, and fishing. As a society, the Igbo have a long established cultural hierarchy and are divided into some thirty three diverse subgroups, which at least in part explains the diversity of art found among them. Secret societies abound within the Igbo communities, and are responsible for change as well as tradition in the social and political life ... moreamong the people. As a collective people, they display a remarkable artistic diversity, shared among dozens and dozens of mask varieties, as well as an innumerable variation in figures. The piece is carved with a base, and stands on its own without support, though it does lean and support would be advisable. Large groups of Chokwe currently reside in Angola. Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their language is usually referred to as Chokwe, a Bantu language. Many also speak the official languages of their countries: English in Zambia, French in Democratic Republic of Congo, and Portuguese(as first or second language) in Angola. Using guns they had received in trade from the Ovimbundu. Chokwe language and influence then began to dominate northeastern Angola and spread among the Lunda peoples. The Portuguese had virtually no contact with the Chokwe until the 1930s whe

It comes from a region of stylistic interchange and intermingling of people over an extended period of time although we strongly think this could be a Kwele mask. This is a well carved mask in which the sculptural form plays an important role in the visual impact of the mask. Masks among the Kwele appeared during initiations to validate and bring initiates into full membership of the men Bwiti secret society or they acted to impose sanctions for social control. The costume would have been attached to the mask by cords that were threaded through the holes at the back of the mask.   African Dan, We, Kran (Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire) Koagle,Monkey,Chimpanzee Mask
Koagle(Monkey. Chimpanzee) mask from the We or Kran people of the Dan region of Liberia or the Cote d' Ivoire. 6" H. Carved in traditional simple style with prominent forehead, sunken eyes, and protruding, open mouth. Masks of this type were once used to incite agressive behavior in men about to go into battle. They were later used. And are used today to to teach good behaviour as the animalistic behaviour of the dancers wearing these mask parallels the unpredictble actions of the ape while they dance and act wildly, chaotically, and irresponsibly. Mask appears to have some age and patina to it. And the African trader I bought it from said it was a slightly older, maybe a mid-late 20th century piece. gsrx_vers_474(GS 6.4.2(474)

Beautiful Songye African Mask
A beautiful wood and pigment mask from the Songye tribe of The Democratic Republic of the Congo. It appears to be a female mask since the center ridge is not pronounced. It is in good condition with a single small split in the wood at the back of the top of the mask which is in keeping with the age and use of the piece and is not visible from most viewing angles. Please refer to the last photo regarding the split and to the photos in general for overall condition. The mask is approximately 14" tall. Approximately 6 1/2" wide and approximately 6 1/2" deep. A beautiful example of African design, it is a well-crafted and graphically dramatic object. I provide shipping insurance for purchase and welcome questions and comments. Thanks for your interest!

REPRICED: VTG AFRICAN HELMET MASK CHOKWE , NDEBELE , MENDE ? COWRIE SHELL & BEAD
Offered for your consideration… African Helmet Mask Decorated with raffia hair. Cowrie shells, beads Ì Description: This auction is for an African helmet mask. It has a full head of“hair” made of raffia type material; across the forehead is a band of cowrie shells decorated with alternating light blue and cobalt blue beads that are. I think, made of glass. The face is beautiful, with elaborately incised cheeks, and the mask displays a clenched fist beneath the chin. The mask is approximately 15" high, and approximately 11" wide at the top. As to where this mask comes from. After hours of online research I still don’t know. It has elements of masks made by the Ndebele tribe of Bulawayo. Zimbabwe; and also of the Mende masks, the Bundu or Sowei masks of the Sande Society of Sierra Leone and Liberia; and of the Chokwe tradition ... morefrom Angola. Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia. Condition: This mask is in very good vintage condition. The condition issues are twofold: there is a crack in the wooden face that has been repaired(pictured) and(probably due to careless storage previously) the straw“hair” is flatter on one side than the other. Thank you for considering adding this piece to your collection! Terms The most important thing to me in doing this work is your satisfaction with the goods and services you’ve received from me. For this reason. I request that you read the terms set out below… if we understand and respect each other, we are certain to have a happy and memorable experience together! By placing a bid. The religion associated with Bwa wooden plank masks is focused on the spirit Lanie whose power is manifested through the wooden mask. Bwa people are predominantly farmers.
