This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, ... moreas the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. The artistic diversity of the Bamana is without doubt one of the most astounding. And confounding, of all West African groups. It is interesting that perhaps their closest rivals in complexity are their neighbors to the north and east, the Dogon, with whom they share certain stylistic similarities. Complex religious, funerary, initiation, and agricultural rites have resulted in an enormous pantheon of ritual objects. When collectors think of Bamana, the image of a"chi wara" often leaps to mind. These stunning, zoomorphic headdresses, danced during the planting of crops, employ the carved head and horns of antelopes, as well as zig-zag, open-work designs, reportedly representing the path of the sun. A basketry, cap-like structure is attached to the bottom so that it can be worn. Other recognizable masks are not as well understood, and their use reflects the mind-boggling complexity of the predominantly animist Bamana religion. Among these are the animal-form masks such as this, often quite abstract, used in the"kono" and"kore" societi

Like many groups throughout West Africa, have traditionally celebrated the harvest of important crops, like yams, with masked dances. Masks with hinged jaws are used by both the Ogoni and their neighbors the Ibibio for harvest festivals, as the movable lower jaw would make a happy, clacking sound when the dancers jumped up and down. Identification and attribution of masks from the Niger Delta region can be difficult, since they were often carved by members of adjacent cultures for sale/trade to their neighbors. It is well-known that a number of Delta peoples, including the Ogoni, have used Ibibio carvers extensively in the past. The lives of the Ogoni have been severely disrupted by the pollution caused by oil drilling in their historic homelands, and this has caused thousands of them to move inland and disperse. As a result they have abandoned many of their ritual ceremonies, and their masks have become highly collectible. For a fabulous photographic display of the masks from the Niger D

No comparative example has been found. This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) could come from the Akan people of the Ghana and Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante. They are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools and hung n the wall. Such masks are said to represent the heads of defeated enemies and are shown with some evidence of local scarification which is rare among the Akan but often shown on terracotta sculptures. It is difficult to determine the age of this Brass mask however the attention to detail and the facial features show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman. The literal translation of"kponyungo" is"funeral head mask. and it is used not only for funerals but also for anti-witchcraft ceremonies. The mask combines the features of numerous important totem animals. Including antelopes, buffaloes, crocodiles, warthogs, hornbills, chameleons. Some scholars think the toothy mouth represents a baboon, others a crocodile. The mask is used to ward off the evil embodied by the forces of the bush. And is danced by the"Poro" as well as other societies. The Senufo are the dominant culture in Cote d'Ivoire, and they extend across the border into Mali. They have interminged with other peoples like the Bambara and Lobi, and some of their artworks show their influence. The Senufo carve numerous male and female figures in a variety of positions. As well as many remarkable masks. Most adhere rather strictly to a known set of proportions, but some can be quite abstract. It is thought that most important Senufo sculptures are produced by"professional" carvers known to the village, and this accounts for the rather standardized artistic traits

Museum quality F rom a private collection This a very elegant and classically beautiful example of this type of Pende mask and it resembles somewhat the Giwoyo mask in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum Of Art. This mask is one of the best that I have ever seen. I do know beyond question that it is old. But I am unsure of the use factor, although to my eye there is some evidence. It was collected in mid 70's and is better than any I've seen made for the market in recent years, which tend to be rather ugly and small in size by comparison. Possibly older example of the famous"Gunyege" or"Zakpei" racing masks of the Dan. It is possible that the bells and fabric below the mouth are a fairly recent addition. These so-called"racing" masks were historically used in a serious game of chase, where the runner being chased, the mask-wearer, would be beaten if caught. The roles would then be reversed, and the captor would don the mask and, in turn, be chased. These games continue today, but are now forms of entertainment, and actual violence is rare. It is known however that the Dan were heavily preyed upon by slave raiders in the 17/18th century, and the creation of Liberia in 1847 was marked by the repatriation of large numbers of them. These returning ex-slaves eventually outnumbered their relatives in the Ivo

They have played a central role in 20th century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and West Coast. According to a legend, during the 18th century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels.
