Lega Idimu Mask- Democratic Republic of Congo Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Vegetal fibers, pigment, patina Height 22.8cm( 9in) without raffia collar ... moreKudi Gallery Collection. Provincetown, MA Ex-Private Collection. Naples, FL, 2006 Acquired at auction in Naples. Florida. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes In the 16th century the Lega began their long migration from modern day Uganda into their present location. They were a warlike people whose fierceness inspired those. With whom they came into contact, to adopt many Lega customs. In the 17th century they attacked the Rwandan outpost of Rutshurer on their way to Maniema, just west of Lake Tanganyika, dividing and conquering the people who lived in the region. Many cultural traits have been assimilated into the surrounding cultures, and the Lega still dominate the region today. The Bwami society is the context for the production of most Lega art work, which includes wooden statuettes and masks. Lega masks fall into the category of Bwami initiation objects. The Lega further divide them into five types according to material, size, and form: lukwakongo, kayam-ba, idimu, muminia, and lukungu(Biebuyck 1973,164) They serve as an important mark of rank, identifying the owners as members of specific Bwami levels. This serene Lega mask was formerly of a private Naples family collection. The auction specialist noted the consignor's father was an avid collector of African art and purchased the mask in 2006 from the Kudi Gallery in Provincetown. The mask has some minor age cracks and chips. All stable and typical of traditional use. Good condition. Appropriate for age, origin and medium. Reference a close example from the Fowler Museum Collection in Los Angeles. CA(see last photo or reference on the Fowler Museum Website) WE WILL SHIP WORLDWIDE* If you are outside the USA. Title, Lega Passport Mask DR Congo African, Type of Object, Passport Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Lega, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate ... moreAge, 20th Century, Dimensions, 7.25 inches H. x 3.25 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Worn patina. Stains from water, Additional Information: A Lega passport mask. The Lega people live near the northern end of Lake Tanganyika on the banks of the Lualaba River in the DR Congo. They are also known as the Warega. Living in small village groups. They have no centralized authority, but govern themselves through a communal association known as"Bwami. This association is composed of male and female members, who strive to advance up through the various ranks of Bwami, a long process which involves challenges as well as proof of knowledge. The ultimate goal for the initiate is to reach the highest level. And become a"Kindi, a position of power, prestige and influence with the village. It is during the various Bwami ceremonies that the charming and popular heart-faced masks are used. The masks are transported in baskets from village to village by high-ranking elders. Lega masks are usually carved in a distinctive style, with a heart-shaped, concave face, slightly protruding forehead, narrow nose, slit eyes and a slightly open mouth, often with a rather surprised and charming expression. The surfaces of the masks are rubbed with kaolin/pembe each time they are used, and thus acquire their striking white appearance. Though fairly common, Lega masks continue to be incredibly popular with collectors. The social and political life of the Lega(also known as the Warega) is regulated by the Bwami society. To which both men and women belong. There are seven levels for men, four levels for women. Masks were used for initiation to one of the first two levels of the Bwami society. The white sections were repainted with Pembe each time they were danced. The mask was worn by the initiate and also displayed on a fence. Small masks like this were used as badg

In fact, composed of a cluster of ... moretribes(Bushoong, Ngeende, Shoowa, etc. which each represent a different historic subgroup and each had a representative at the court of the Kuba king. The Kuba Kingdom produces a vast array of objects- both for court and rituals. Three main types of mask are known– although great variations exist among subgroups. The piece here is known as Ishyeen Imaalu– a mask from Northern Kuba territory used in initiation rites. As well as for funerals. It shows the striking features of Kuba masks, including a pointy forehead, a large, stylized nose, and protruding eyes. The cut here is very sharp making for a powerful looking mask. It is covered with black, red and white pigments in geometrical motives, typical of the Kuba. The inside of the mask also shows a nice patina from use and it has its complete hairdo, made of fabric, beads and feathers. Dimensions are 15x7x11.

An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their ... morecopious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing it holds sacred. This mask originates from the Gelede cult, which focuses its attention on the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities helmet masks such as these are worn on or over the head with a raffia costume, and danced in reverence and celebration. On the'cheeks' of the face are large identifying scarification marks. It still has most of its original pigment, including white(kaolin) green, etc. Color of the pigment is faded in some areas, but still represented strongly for the most part, and the piece stands well on its own without support. Wear and age marks are in evidence as is common, including minor age cracking, rub marks, etc. but the piece does not appear to have undergone any serious breaks or repairs. This is a beautiful, prominent, eye catching standalone piece, and a highly coveted artform from the Yoruba culture! This piece measures in at 10.5" x 10.5" x 11" With a weight of three and a half pounds. MEDIUM: Wood. Pigment NOTHING we sell at African Tribal Creations is made in China. The Chokwe also pronounced Tchokwe are an ethnic group of Central Africa whose ancestry can perhaps be traced to Mbundu and Mbuti Pygmies. Large groups of Chokwe currently reside in Angola. Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their language is usually referred to as Chokwe, a Bantu language. Many also speak the official languages of their countries: ... moreEnglish in Zambia, French in Democratic Republic of Congo, and Portuguese(as first or second language) in Angola. The Chokwe were once one of the twelve clans of the great Lunda Empire of 17th- and 18th-century Angola. They eventually became independent when they refused to continue paying tribute to the Lunda emperor. Their successful trading and abundant resources caused them to be one of the wealthiest groups in Angola. By 1900 the Chokwe had dismantled the Lunda kingdom altogether, using guns they had received in trade from the Ovimbundu. Chokwe language and influence then began to dominate northeastern Angola and spread among the Lunda peoples. The Portuguese had virtually no contact with the Chokwe until the 1930s when the Chokwe traded wax. Rubber. The Portuguese then quickly brought an end to the dominance of the Chokwe people in the region. Bandundu is one of the ten provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are

Mali: Extremly Rare African Tribal used mask from the Senufo.
Large Tribal used African mask from the Senufo. Mali. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Height: 37 cm. During the 16th century. The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. They settled on the left bank of the Lualaba River, on a savanna and forest-covered plateau. Divided into many subgroups, the 150,000 Songye people are governed by a central chief assisted by innumerable secret societies. The Songye traditionally relied mostly on farming and hunting for subsistence. Because the rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs who ... morewere often buried in them. Fishing was not practiced except in times of great need. The artistic wares of the Songye, including pottery made by women and weaving and metalworking done by men, were traded extensively with their neighbors.

Large Old and Rare Tribal us. Tribal used African bird mask from the Yohure. Iv. Coast. This type of mask has protecting function. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Height: 36 cm. The Yohure are noted for their beautifully crafted masks that combine human and animal features. They have elaborate hairstyles which often include horns. Elongated faces with a high forehead, arched eyebrows and a low protruding mouth. The outline of the mask is characteristically surrounded by a serrated edge. The function of each type of mask is not rigidly fixed. The 20.000 Yohure inhabit the central region of the Côte d’Ivoire, the territory between the White and Red Bandama Rivers, to the east of the city of Bouafle. The Yohure are geographically and linguistically situated between the Baule, an Akan language group to the east, and the Guro and ... moreGban(Gagu) southern Mande-speaking peoples to the west. Depending upon their proximity to their neighbors, the inhabitants of Yohure villages are either entirely Baule or Mande speaking. Villages are generally associated with one clan. They are governed by a leader assisted by a council of elders who represent each family holding. Each family lineage traces his roots to a particular ancestor. Not only their language, but also the culture, religion and art are influenced by their powerful neighbors, the Baule and Guro. The Yohure possess a strong sense of identity and have evolved a refined art. The Yohure decorate different everyday objects with figurative representations, but first of all their beautiful masks reveal their artistic abilities. The masks of the Yohure represent human faces often supplemented by animal attributes. They have an elongated face with a protruding mouth and pierced semi-circular eyes set under a high forehead. An elaborate plaited coiffure parted on each side. Often with horns at the end, completes the image, while the outline of the mask is characteristically surrounded by a serrated edge. The masks are considered emblems of yu spirits. Very dangerous

Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many cen

TRIBAL AFRICAN SUKU YAKA MASK CONGO EX HANDLEY COLLECTION
Suku Initiation Mask- Democratic Republic of Congo Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Vegetal fibers, pigment, patina Height 34.2cm( 13.5in) without raffia collar Ex-Handley Collection. Los Altos Hills, CA Xanadu Gallery. San Francisco, CA Property from a Private Pennsylvania Collection Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes The Suku create complicated masks which are used by the initiation societies to mark the transition to adulthood. During this initiation period. Which may last a year or more, adolescent boys are separated from the village and made to undergo a series of ordeals, including circumcision, designed to measure their strength and courage. These tests often culminate in the boys' symbolic death as children and rebirth as men. Among Yaka and Suku peoples, ... morethe conclusion of mukanda-coming to manhood rites-is accompanied by performances of kholuka masks. The imagery that surmounts these masks translates into visual form the lyrics of songs that emphasize gender differences. Figural representations of humans and animals ridicule women and celebrate male virility. Contemporary works reinforce generational continuity and male solidarity by incorporating the ashes of masks danced on the occasion of preceding mukanda(Metropolitan Museum, 2011) Note this fine Suku helmet mask comes from the collection of Silicon Valley Pioneer Raymond G. Handley(1923- 2009) Handley developed the first solar powered building in Silicon Valley in the mid 1970's. After his brother. William Jules Handley, became the U.S. Ambassador to Mali, Africa in 1962, Raymond became interested in the country and wanted to make a difference in the lives of its people, drilling more than 50 water wells for Dogon villages through 300 feet of granite during the 1980's. A vibrant, adventurous and highly successful developer of Silicon Valley, Raymond became a keen collector of art and traveled extensively. His journeys took him from the highest mountains of Tibet t

Powerful leaders of this secret society have badges of office and certain symbols reserved to them to influence initiates. Large masks were worn horizontally on the head and held by the projecting horns. They appeared during initiations of youths into manhood. Sometimes, they were held in the male secret Poro Society precinct in the ‘bush’ where they were kept hidden from the uninitiated. The crude carving of the mask was consistent with the power of the mask that had magical amulets attached to it. There are some holes due to old insect damage and a crack repaired with glue on the top. Otherwise the piece is in good co

Antique Hand Carved African Whole Head Mask From Mozambique
You will be bidding on a very old hand carved wooden African whole head mask. It is carved from one piece of wood. This mask was purchased in an antique shop in Tanzania in the early 1990s and belived to have been made in Mozambique. The wood is quite light in weight. It has intricate carving designs on the forehead. Cheeks, chin, nose, and jawline. There is some hair on a portion of the head, but it appears that much of it has fallen out. It feels like real hair. This mask measures about 12" by about 8" It would have to be a small head to fit into it. One of the eyes has a tiny slit on the inside and the teeth openings do go all the way through, so a person could breathe with the mask on. This mask would be held to the face by hand rather than any kind of strap. It is very realistic. The way it is made. It could be displayed hanging ... moreon a wall or sitting on a desk. More than likely it was worn in some kind of tribal dancing. I do my best to describe items correctly. I want my buyers to be happy with their purchase. When you receive the item and are pleased with it. I would appreciate your leaving positive feedback. Then I will give you positive feedback. If there is a problem, please contact me and I will work with you to resolve it. I ship only to the United States and Canada.

Kuba Ngeende Mask Smiling Congo African SALE Was $450
Title, Kuba Mask. Smiling, Feathers, UNUSUAL Isheen Maal African Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Ngeende, Materials, Wood. Feathers, raffia, Approximate Age, Mid to second half  20th Century, Dimensions, 16 inches High x 12 inches Wide. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, Minor crack in base rim and mouth. Large crack on top of head.Large chip to bottom. Additional Information: This is an interesting mask for it shows unusual features I have ever found on Kuba masks. The hairstyle. And lthe large smiling mouth as well as the general structure of the mask(facial mask with headress) are atypical of the Kuba style. The only elements that related this mask to the Kuba are the goggle eyes with holes around as seen on Isheen Maal masks. This is an innovative product from dating probably from ... morethe second half of the 20th century. Traditional Kuba masks belong to the royal art. And most masks are somehow related to the three main characters of Kuba mythology: 1) Woot(the"first ancestor, akin to Adam) 2) Woot's brother, and rival for the love of 3) Woot's sister-who ended up with Woot. This one was probably made by the Ngeende. The Ngeende group claims to be descended from Ishweemy. One of the nine sons of Woot, the primordial founder of the Kuba Kingdom. Accordingly, the Ngeende are of special importance to the Kuba Kingdom and designated as the holders of the Kuba official charms, Muyum. They share not only a common history but also the same culture and traditions as the Kuba. Even today, they still send representatives to the Kuba-Bushoong court. The Ngeende live in small villages led by chiefs who rule with the council of elders. Understandably, their art has many congruities with the art of the Kuba-Bushoong, the Ngoongo, the Kete, and all of them produce masks. The Ngeende masks tell the story of Woot and other important characters in the foundation of Kuba kingdom. These include Bongo(Mbwoom) Mukenge which is a variant of Moshambooy, Shala-Mushampoji
