The powerful neck supports a head with a pointed protruding snout, and this line extends upwards, beyond the long sharp ears, in a gentle curve ending with the vigorous towering horns. These finely-shaped antelope heads are colorfully ... morepainted with large triangles in white, brownish-red, black, and light-blue, and the triangles are filled in with rows of spots. The headdress represents Yirige. The culture hero, who drove away evil spirits at the first tilling of the land. Mask dancers descended from heaven repeat the deeds of the hero-founder Yirige and his children. The mask also appears at the death ritual following the mourning period. The mask. Which to an observer seems impossible for a dancer to balance, is fastened to the head with a plaited basket or by some other way. Other masks are rare. DOGON WALU ANTELOPE MASK #1991 - For African Art Gallery
DOGON WALU ANTELOPE MASK#1991 Tribe: Dogon. Country: Mali. Material: Wood. Pigment, fiber. Size: 20" 50.8 cm) Tall. Item: 1991 Condition: Good. Provenance: Ex. James E Adkins Collection. Florida, USA) The Dogon Walu mask resembling an antelope or gazelle has two horns and a box like composition for the"face" The Dogon associated this mask with the first animal they killed in the days when they were hunters. And, by extention, with their first ancestor. The Dogon walu mask is used in funerary masquerades and cyclical agricultural rites. The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, ... moreand onion. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! The Bete of the Ivory Coast live along the Sassandra River in large villages organized according to family lineages. Like neighboring peoples such as the We or the Dan and especially the We whose influence can be seen in this mask. The Bete carve and use masks of extraordinary form and inventiveness to represent the untamed forces of nature. The present mask is simply carved with sober details. Tabwa masks are rare and little is known concerning their use and functions. The literature points out three types of masks among the Tabwa. The first category is represented by the anthropomorphic wooden helmet mask like this with headdress nicely decorated with diamond and other patterns. Scarification patterns around hairstyle line, in temples, and in cheeks. This category represents the female ancestor(Musangwe) symbolizing fertility. The name Musangwe is related to sexual promiscuity. Our mask falls into this category. During the masquerade, Musangwe is always accompanied by the male mask(Kiyunde) which constitutes the second category. This second type is a zoomorphic mask representing a buffalo. There is no precise information to confirm if these two masks perform the primordial or mythical couple. The third type of masks was discovered more recently. Masks of this category are made of glass beads stitched onto raffia cloth. The functions of these masks are not known for sure. But they all are related to either the Mbudye or the Butwa society. They are probably involved in ritual dances linked to fertility, the birth of twins and ancestor cult in the Butwa

DOGON LION MASK#2081 Tribe: Dogon. Country: Mali. Material: Wood. Size: 13.5" 34.3 cm) Tall. Item: 2081 Condition: Good. Provenance: James E Adkins Estate Collection. Florida, USA) There are nearly eighty styles of Dogon masks. And for the most part they all utilize the use of various geometric shapes in their design, independent of the various animals they are supposed to represent. Most masks have large geometric eyes and stylized features and are often painted or colored with various substances. The Dogon continue an ancient masquerading tradition called"Dama" which commemorates the origin of death. Dama memorial ceremonies are held to accompany the dead into the ancestral realm and restore order to the universe. In these ceremonies there are a large number of performers, often a few hundred, and it is considered absolutely ... morenecessary to the ceremony. In the case of the dama, the timing, types of masks involved, and other ritual elements are often specific to one or two villages and may not resemble those seen in locations only several miles distant. The masks also appear during baga-bundo rites performed by small numbers of masqueraders before the burial of a male Dogon. The better known Kanaga and sirige masks are followed in the dama ceremony by masks that evoke the behavior of some of the animals that inhabit the regions where the Dogon live and hunt. They include among others- antelopes. Hares, lions, hyenas, cows, birds and monkeys. The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, and onion. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habi

Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) representing Serpent heads Pendant. African Adornment. The item is about 2 3/4 x 2" In excellent antique condition. Amulets and Talismans: One of the most powerful forms of magic of African culture is that of the amulet or talisman. This can be used to attract love. Life, health, economic well-being and all types of benefit. Moreover, once consecrated, the amulet can be used to protect from spiritual predators and any kind of damage used by opposing dark forces. Since the dawn of man the various regions of African have looked to occult sciences and sacred truths. To this end. Esoteric traditions have begun ... moreto blend quickly. These may offer tribute to the Gods or to Nature, depending on the various branches of African magic, Palo, Obeah or Voodoo. They may also offer later syncretic traditions; as a result you may find Catholic Saints or other figures in Voodoo amulets and talismans. Many would consider the making and consecration of amulets and talismans one of the most important. But difficult, parts of the practice. As a result, those who were able to consecrate such amulets were often considered the wisest and most important of the practitioners. They were greatly respected and feared, both for their spiritual prowess and their ability to deal with the hidden psychological condition of others. If we study the different lines that divide these beliefs; Voodoo. Candomble, Palo, Obeah, etc. we often find more similarities than differences. The spirits, histories and rituals are similar or in many cases exactly alike. We also find roots in rituals of ancient African origins, as well as the initial tools intended to help spiritual growth and the realization of personal desires. Talismans were often created in these ancient rituals. Secretly consecrated with the power of a divin

Liberia: Extremly Rare Tribal used African mask from the Bassa.
Extremly Rare and Tribal used African mask from the Bassa. Liberia. Hand carved from a single piece of colorful painted wood. Height: 38 cm. The Bassa. One of the largest Kru-speaking peoples in the central coastal region and adjacent hinterland of Liberia, have been strongly influenced by the Mende-speaking neighbors, especially the Dan and Kpelle. Their economy is based on rice which they cultivate around small villages which have a population around two hundred. Bassa artistic tradition has been also influenced by their north-eastern neighbors, the Dan, who live on the Côte d’Ivoire. The Bassa have several female and male societies, including chu-den-zo. To whom gela( geh-naw) masks belong. Bassa carvers are famed for their gela masks worn during the no men's society ceremonies when the wearer of the mask moves with feminine and ... moreelegant grace. The masqueraders entertain the spectators when initiated boys return from bush camp. When important guests visit the village, and on other festive occasions. The dancer wears the mask. Which is attached to a woven framework, on his forehead, and looks through a slit in the fabric which is part of the costume that covers his head and upper body. Because they are fixed on a framework, the interior of most such masks shows no signs of wear. Bassa sculptures also bare similarity to Dan and display monumental and solemn qualities combined with skillful carving. Figures of dogs carved with a human face on the side. As well as stools, are known to exist, although the purpose of the dog statue remains unknown. W e ship worldwide BUT outside Europe takes it 12 till 22 working days to be arrived.

They were said to represent the spirit of forest. The Kumu(Komo) live in the Kisangani area and have as their neighbors the Metoko and Lengola. There is a long tradition of figurative ... moreiron. Bronze and brass casting in the Western Sudan reaching back to the period of the great Empire of Mali as early as the 12 th century. The age of this interestingly cast iron mask is undetermined but it does reflect an earlier period of bronze or brass casting. The facial features on this mask are similar to those found on wood sculptures from the Bamana. These masks are forged by blacksmiths working them into shapes that could be worn. Simply carried, or kept in a ritual location. Today there is no active tradition of these masks being used. In fact as little is known about forged iron masks among the Bamana or Dogon or Senufo or any of the Western Sudanic groups it would be conjecture to assert more than this at this time. This mask does indicate the skill of the blacksmith in forging a mask out of iron. A medium much more difficult to work than wood. 72619* All content. African Illness Mask From Nigeria Art Carving
Illness mask from Nigeria Illness mask. Black-colored and painted wood Not sure of time period. Height: 27 cm(10-1/2 in. Ogoni Yam Festival Mask Delta Region Nigerian African sale wAS $99
Title, Ogoni Yam Festival Mask Delta Region. Nigeria Africa, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Ogoni, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, 20th century/last quarter, Dimensions, 11.5 inches H. x 8 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Patina worn away in small places, Additional Information: A late example of Ogoni Yam Festival Masks with a charming face painted in white. Black, and red. This is a blind mask without holes around! The Ogoni. Like many groups throughout West Africa, have traditionally celebrated the harvest of important crops, like yams, with masked dances. Masks with hinged jaws are used by both the Ogoni and their neighbors the Ibibio for harvest festivals, as the moveable lower jaw would make a happy, clacking sound when the dancers jumped up and down. Identification and attribution ... moreof masks from the Niger Delta region can be difficult, since they were often carved by members of adjacent cultures for sale/trade to their neighbors. It is well-known that a number of Delta peoples, including the Ogoni, have used Ibibio carvers extensively in the past. The lives of the Ogoni have been severely disrupted by the pollution caused by oil drilling in their historic homelands, and this has caused thousands of them to move inland and disperse. As a result they have abandoned many of their ritual ceremonies, and their masks have become highly collectible. For a fabulous photographic display of the masks from the Niger Delta, see the G.I. Jones Collection. 68628* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Direct.
