Crack damage in mouth area, cracks with repair to the back, Additional Information: A large circular mask with two strong curved horns and a face recognized by two stylized eyes painted in white and a toothy square mouth. Chips, scratches, and old insect damage arrested. Among the Baule of the Ivory Coast this bark painted face mask is known as Goli Kplekple. Historically the mask was a late introduction to the Baule who acquired it from the neighboring Wan people sometime around 1900. Such a mask appears during ceremonies celebrating the life and death of honored elders or at other times will dance to simply entertain the village or celebrate the harvest. The Baule have a number of different masks ranging from refined portrait masks to large headpieces representing wild buffalo or antelope and are exuberantly carved and painted. The Kplekple mask was one of a set of masks that appear during a ceremony and is identified with the spirit of the young men who dance the mask. As one of the first masks to appear during a dance ceremony Goli Kplekple sets the stage and engages the audience and prepares the way for the more important masks that will dance later. Cut reeds, Additional Information: Salampasu masks are easily identified by their bulging foreheads. Deep undercut eyes and strong nose, rectangular mouth showing carved teeth, and balls wound of reeds which make up the headpiece and dangle from the chin. The balls are made of reeds, and the rope is handmade, of raffia. The face is embellished with metal studs in forehead, along the nose and mustachio. The netting at the back holds the mask on the face. This is a well carved ... moremask coming with its own custom stand. The Salampasu people who live east of the Kasai and on the upper western reaches of the Lulua River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and even flow over into Angola. They have had long term contact with the Lwalwa to the north and to the south the Lunda who they recognize by paying tributes to them. The Salampasu are best known for their powerfully aggressive masks like this one. In many cases. The face is covered with tiny copper sheets. Masks among the Salampasu are known under different names. Munkika, Kasangu and Mulandwa. This one is most likely a Kasangu mask. All these masks were worn during initiation into the menâs warrior societies Idangani and Ibiku. During funeral ceremonies for dignitaries and in Boys' initiation and circumcision rituals. The coffee-beans shaped eyes, a fine nose. The close mouth shows an unusual shape. The base of the face is surrounded with a raffia beard decorated with cowrie shells and beads. The same material are used on the raffia headdress.The hairstyle as well as some facial details recall Kuba or Leele style. This is a Leele mask. The Leele(or Lele) live in the confluence of the Sankuru and Kasai Rivers in territory which adjoins the land of the Kuba. They have a number of similarities with the Kuba. Zaouli Guru Dance Mask with an Antelope African mask from West Africa
A wonderful danced and used. Albeit vintage and not antique African Zaouli(or Zaule, but also spelled Sauli and half a dozen different ways) not to be confused with the much larger ethnic group Baule whom they share a similar language and culture including masquerade dances) from the Ivory Coast in West Africa. According the to Guro people, non animal masks are entertainment masks such as this one– representing Zaoule. These masks are danced for births, special visitors, during the intiation rites of young men and women, and for funerals. They are also danced for entertainment and for story telling. Zaouli is a popular mask dance created by Gouros in the fifties. Legends at the origin of the Zaouli mask and dance are diverse. But all say that they were inspired by a very beautiful girl named“Djela Lou Zaouli” daugther of Zaouli. This one ... moreshows a beautiful woman with ram's horns, a green platform and what appears to be a roan antelope(the roan antelope are the first antelope to return to the Guru territory after the rains begin and with their long horns in many cultures are said to have taught farming to the people) Painted designs and cowrie shells add to the detail of this mask. Also of note are raised beautiful scarifications on the forehead and each cheek as well as a toothy grin with a chip missing(sign of beauty) The ear lobes have been pierced to allow for dangling earrings. Most likely this was used as a planting mask. While it doesn't show extreme age, it shows characteristics of a piece carved by a master carver and used in dance festivals and traditional use. Last half of the 20th Century. The Zaouli masks are one of the few danced masks of the Guru- many of the made for export tourist masks attributed to the Guru or Baule/Guru are actually Baule carved. Both groups share social practices and some stylistic elements in their masks and carvings. In fact the mask could come from the northern Guro where heavily abstracted masks representing females are danced or be simply an amalgamation of style elements from both Guro and Yaure and the better-known Baule. It is interesting that the mask has been repainted numerous times indicating its age and long use and by doing so further blurs traditional stylistic identifiers associated with these two peoples of Cote dâivoire. But among the Yaure the darkly painted mask is used primarily for the Lo ceremony and at times may dance in the Je ritual celebration that cleanses the village after the death of an individual. Yaure masks can also represent âYuâ a spiritual power. The standing female figure is finely carved and shown wearing double ivory bracelets on each wrist and at one time was covered in a white pigment or white clay the residue of which is still seen in crevices of the figure. Unbelievably time intensive, and makes one-of-a-kind pieces. A casting mask in the form of a crocodile head with an open mouth showing pointed teeth, and open eyes. There are fine motifs around the eyes and the top. This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) comes from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante, they are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They represent human and animal heads and are sometimes used as trophies. It is difficult to determine the age of this fine mask however the delicacy of the treatment of the facial details show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman and a long tradition of casting in West Africa. This example comes from the Kumu(Komo) people. Komo masks have become known to collectors only in the last quarter century. Mostly as a result of an influx of foreign aide workers into the region. Among the Kumu or Komo people such masks were performed during the ceremonies of initiation and circumcision of young boys(Nkumbi or Kumbi) They were also used as dancing masks at the funerals of important members of the community.They are said to represent the spirit of forest. Such a mask was used by the Kumu people who live north of the Lega in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is difficult to discuss this mask definitively as they are either incompletely discussed or are themselves so very rare. Sketchy reports indicate that they were used in many associations including in initiation ceremonies of the Ganza and Mbai association. By a diviner's society or Nkunda association. They were displayed in funerals for members of the Nkunda association. Unknown African Mask possibly PENDE or SALAMPASU
This very unusual mask was acquired about 10 years ago in the African Warehouse in New York City. It has an unusual and dramatic cubist expression. Intense incised scarification pattern on face further enhances the mystery. The mask showed signs of use and originality. This mask does show some original-use repair using wire to attach the broken piece in back of the mask together. There is some abrasion of the patina. Overall a truly one of a kind piece.

Old African Chokwe Pwo Mask with Provenance
Old African Chokwe Pwo Mask with Provenance This is a Chokwe Pwo mask. Dating to the first half of the 20th century. It has an old collector's label attached. I bought this and another mask, which I also have listed on eBay this week, from a house clearance dealer in Cheltenham. All I know about'Mr Robson' is that he worked as an administrator in various parts of Africa from the 1930s, until he retired to Cheltenham in the 1950s. He collected various curios for his own collection, so it is likely that this mask was old at the time. It measures 10" from forehead to chin x 6" across and has hair and woven mesh made from natural vegetable matter. There are a few old holes in the mesh, but it is in otherwise good condition with good patina and colour. There is no reserve price on this item. This mask is identified as a Ibibio mask used to celebrate water spirits(mami Wata-Mammy Water) In addition to the imagery of a snake and abird. A concave face dominated by a long and straight nose, two large ears, small rounded pierced eyes, and a wild open mouth. showing teeth and tongue. The mask is made out of dense wood and the surface shows a worn dark patina. Suruku mask is worn by adult Bamana males during the initiation of young men into adult status. All Bamana males advance through various levels of initiation and secret knowledge and the Kore mask appears for only the most senior of men representing their personal struggle to achieve knowledge and wisdom. The symbolism of this mask identifies it as a suruku mask of the Kore society. Suruku masks are seen as a combination of human and hyena features. Hyenas are thought by the Bamana to represent foolish behavior reflecting an uninformed view of the world. Very much like the young male initiates. But there is a tiny nick in the left nostril. This is a Baule mask. The Baule live in the Ivory Coast This mask shows the distinguishing features of the Baule mask: long straight nose. High forehead, arched brows, downcast eyes, pouting lips, intricately carved coiffure and the zigzag patterns bordering the face.
