This is a good example of Chi-wara masks showing signs of use and good age. The Bamana(also called Bambara) are among the largest ethnic groups in the Western Sudan style region. Because traditional life revolves around agriculture. Issues concerning the cycles of nature and the productivity of farmers inform Bamana society and art. Knowledge of agriculture practices is transmitted from generation to generation through the Ci-wara(or Chiwara, Tyi Wara) society. Unusual Hand Carved Wood Black and Gray African Mask with Rope Dreadlocks Kenya
You will be bidding on a vintage black and gray African mask brought over from Kenya in the early 1990s. It is made of hand carved wood and measures about 11" long by 8" wide. It has two small slits for eyes and is held up to the face instead of being strapped on. Hair is characterised by rope attached to a burlap like material and looks like dreadlocks. The rope is made of a crude krinkly material. Possibly long strands of dried grass. This is a nice and unusual mask. I do my best to describe items correctly. It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The costume would have been attached to the mask by cords that was threaded through the holes at the back of the mask. This netting helps hold the mask on the face. The Salampasu ... morepeople who live east of the Kasai and on the upper western reaches of the Lulua River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and even flow over into Angola. They have had long term contact with the Lwalwa to the north and to the south the Lunda who they recognize by paying tributes to them. The Salampasu are best known for their powerfully aggressive masks covered with copper sheeting or with prominent carved scarification patterns on the face. This mask is considered a classical and well-known style with the bulging forehead. Deep undercut eyes and the strong rectangular mouth showing carved teeth. The face is covered with tiny copper sheets. The headdress with balls wound of reeds is typical of the Salampasu masks. Masks among the Salampasu are known under different names. Language, political and religious structures which influences their arts. The ridge of scarification on the nose is a significant trait in the identification of the masks from this region. The Ngbandi as well as the Ngbaka live in an area bounded by the Ubangi and Lualaba River systems with the Ngombe scattered along the Lualaba River The Ngbaka moved into the area inhabited by the Ngbandi and as a result both groups share sculpture forms and the details of scarification that often leads to some confusion as to the attribution of their masks. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. These masks were presented in-tribe to a relative of our staff who was allowed inroads to many Countries where others could not go in the late 1950's and 1960's. About all we can say about that but suffice to say that these are one of a kind and not tourist masks. We would suggest that they are very special as they were given in ceremony to the relative. Super dense and heavy wood and of course hand carved. Beautifully detailed and they have a crude deep hanging hole at the top/back. They are about 15" long and have a beautiful coloring. Beautifully carved, and quite intimidating, featuring numerous identifying scarification marks. It has come to us from the Congo region of the Chokwe's territory. The eyes are narrowed to slits as is typical for these masks, which is intended to represent the closed eyes of the deceased. They are pigmented with red, as are the lips, and the pigment has become muddied with age. The mask's hairline is intricately detailed as are the scarification marks that cover much of its surface. The patina is a rich chocolate brown. The piece is in good condition, displaying typical age related wear marks, though it shows few signs of use. It has suffered some damage to the upper right hand side of the coiffure area, but the damage appears to be very old. It is a beautiful example of the pwo mask style. The traditional use of this panel is not known. Such plank-style masks such as this were hung on a wall used during initiations. This panel could also be a contemporary example of a decorative panel made to ornament houses. The Songye can be traced back many centuries and were part of the old Luba Kingdom. They eventually developed their own distinct culture to the south of the main Luba population. And today live near the Lomani River. Although they still share some traditions with the Luba, most of their art can now be easily distinquished from their larger neighbors. This mask was purchased in an antique shop in Tanzania in the early 1990s and belived to have been made in Mozambique. The wood is quite light in weight. It has intricate carving designs on the forehead. Temples, cheeks, chin, nose, and jawline. There is hair on a portion of the head that feels and looks like real hair. This mask measures about 10" by about 8" It would have to be a small head to fit into it. The eyes have no slits on the inside, but the teeth openings do go all the way through, so a person could breathe with the mask on. This mask would be held to the face by hand rather than any kind of strap. It is very realistic. The way it is made, it could be displayed hanging on a wall or sitting on a desk. Today we have this very unique African Bamun helmet portrait mask from the Cameroon Grasslands. These masks represent men of noble lineage and represent power and authority. The crests adorned with animal symbol of fertility. The Bamun are an ethnic group of Cameroon. Bamun religion is based upon the ancestral spirits that were incorporated in the ancestors. Older men each lineage had possession of the relics of the ancestors, the ceremonies to ... moreappease these spirits. There is also respect for women, but the details are less well documented. The Bamun also believed that women made fruitful soil. Hence the fact that women were responsible for planting and harvesting. The masks and representations of the head also were important. This piece is made of carved and painted wood, a crown with four faces. From the 20th century and measuring 19" x 10.5" in diameter. In encrusted museum condition with some shrinkage cracks. Additional Information: This mask from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast probably falls ... moreinto a special grouping known as âportrait masksâ. Called ândomaâ by the Baule. They are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as âMbolaâ. It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The costume would have been attached to the mask by cords that was threaded through the holes at the back of the mask. The âMbolaâ dance reflects feminine virtues including graceful movements and elegant dancing steps and celebrates her beauty. These masks are danced to entertain during days that the Baule do not work and they will also appear to honor important visitors to the village. This old. Although the mask has an Asian expression. No such connection has been established. known as duma or mvudi, it represents a female guardian spirit in the initiation of young girls, funerary rites, ancestor cults, and also in dances of the full moon. Such masks are also found among the Dan people. This mask features an unknown animal. It could be a chimpanzee-like. A hyena or a crocodile face. facial details include a domed forehead with carved pointed decoration, an overhanging brow, triangular eye holes, jutting cheekbones, a pointed nose, and a open mouth showing carved teeth painted in white. If truly Dan. This mask probably belongs to the category of Kaogle masks based upon its cubist form and facial features. Kaogle was traditionally associated with the chief who used it to test loyalties during times of war. Kaogle mask wild behavior can end to injuries. In this case the injured victim has no right to complaint because of the personal involvement of the Chief. To prevent injuries Kaogle mask is accompanied by an attendant who carries the sticks and tries to stop any excess from the dancer. Up for sale today we have this very unique African Kuba helmet mask from Zaire. The Kuba live in the Lower Kasai region of central Zaire in a rich environment of dense forest and savanna. Kuba arts primarily address status. Prestige, and the court; they are manifestations of social and political hierarchy. Rank and wealth are expressed in extensive displays of regalia: jewelry, rich garments of embroidered raffia cloth, ceremonial knives, swords, ... moredrums, and elaborated utilitarian items. Valuable imported cowrie shells and beads emblellish garments, furniture, baskets, and masks. Masking was first introduced by a woman who carved a face on a calabash, the original model for initiation masks. The invention was taken over by men, incorporated into initiation, and remains a male privilege. Once Bushong boys move into the nkan initiation shelter, they can wear masks and make excursions into the village frightening women and small children. More powerful masks are worn by initiation officials. The masked Kuba dancer is, in every instance, a spirit manifestation. Made out of wood with partial tooled copper skin, applied glass beads, cloth cowling, cowry bed, and seed pod fringe. It dates from the early 20th century. It measures roughly 13" x 12" x 10. This beautiful mask with a serene face is identified as a Mfon Ekpo Ibibio mask. It is a demanding exercise to identify all Ibibio masks as to their forms and functions for they are subject to many sculptural influences and a number of their cult and ritual activities and the use of masks are drawn from their larger neighbors the Igbo and a number of smaller groups including the Anang and the Oron Ibibio. The Ibibio people live in the area between the Niger Delta and the Cross River.This area is a largely dense tropical forested area in which the Ibibio living in small village groupings exercise social control through the use of masks and figures representing good and evil spirits. The Makonde of Tanzania ... moreand Mozambique are one of the most prolific art producing peoples in eastern Africa. One of the most prominent of these arts are the life size helmet masks called Lipico which are worn on the top of the head partially covering the face and slightly tipped upward so that the dancer can see. Masks play a prominent role in Makonde life serving to mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycle for boys as they move into manhood. The Lipico masks show a wide range of Makonde life and society as they depict initiates. Villagers, coastal Arabs and colonial officials. Makonde will embellish their masks with human hair and beards, insert pegs for teeth, will whiten the eyes and in a quest for realism often show human deformities. In some cases There will be elaborate scarification on the face. Such scarification was done as a part of initiation ceremonies, and also when a ranking member of society assumed a more important political status or social level. It has some scratches on the back from the wire(see pictures) It does appear to be carved out of wood. Hand painted, and rather old. THE PAINT looks very old, and it has lots of scratches and bite marks from being used. currently has 2 holes drilled in the side for hanging. HAS A SMALL STRESS CRACK ON THE SIDE OF THE CHIN. AND A HOLE IN THE WOOD ABOUT THE SIZE OF A DIME.IT LOOKS LIKE AN IMPERFECTION IN THE WOOD, LIKE A KNOT. the wood seems very light for the mask's size. I think because of it's age. The wood is dry. African Tribal Creations presents. A Baga Nimba Figure Resident to Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. The Baga people are a curious and relatively small ethnic group that reside in a region which floods severely for half of the year. The only method of distance transportion is a dugout canoe, and fishing, as well as marshland agriculture(rice, kola nuts, etc. make up their primary livelihood. A monotheistic people, their only ritual is societal initiation, which occurs only once every twenty four years. Art among the Baga people, as well as tradition, has been significantly depleted and repressed due to the advent of Islam in the region. Their most well-known sculpture, is the Nimba(or Dumba) figure, a large, quasi-humanoid figure that displays a large pair of breasts and a long, narrow, almost equine head with a large nose and human-like facial features. ... moreThe figure stand on four legs and would be hoisted onto the dancer's shoulders, where he would be covered beneath the legs under a skirt of raffia fiber. The figures are produced in a number of sizes, the largest of which are used in fertility ceremonies, especially those timed around agricultural harvest periods. Nimba, in the Baga mythology, is a sort of'Earth mother' called upon for needs of fertility and is representative of the most dignified points of Baga culture. This beautiful Nimba figure is a large domestic size. Meaning a home or shrine sized figure, but not a full sized Nimba(which could often be four to five feet in height, weighing several hundred pounds) It is in beautiful condition, displaying normal age related wear, and is finely detailed, with the numerous linear identifying scarification marks characteristic of these figures.
