Mende Helmet Mask, Sande Society, Liberia, African Tribal Creations, Bundu, art
An African Tribal Creations gallery Mende Sande Society Bundu Helmet Mask This auction is for a Mende Sande Society Mask. The Mende people are indigenous to Sierra Leone and Liberia. And number nearly 2 million strong. One of the most famous of all African masks, the Mende Sowo helmet masks of the Sande Society are known in African art circles across the world. They are unique due to the fact that in Africa, they are one of and perhaps THE only masks controlled and danced exclusively by women. The Sande society controls the social and political concerns of women in the region, which includes Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia. They are known to practice genital mutilation of their initiates, and are fiercely protective of the secretive nature of the society. Or on and around the head like a helmet, the masks are representations of the idealized female form, and traditionally display a number of symbolic features. The eyes are in a downcast gaze symbolizing modesty, and the facial features are small and centralized, including the eyes, mouth, and nose. Elaborate hairstyling is common, and is finely detailed in this mask. Scarification marks are common, and present on this piece. The dark patina is said to represent female mystery. This mask is a beautiful example, with a very rich, brown-black patina, and finely rendered carving details. The coiffure is exquisite, tall and elegant, crowning in a decorative loop. It demonstrates normal aging signs, and standard dings, rubs, and scratches from wear and handling, but no serious damage, breaks, or repairs. Please examine the photos for details, and never hesitate to ask any questions! The mask is quite dense, and certainly visually impressive. An absolutely beautiful, fine piece that is certain to compliment any collection! Normal.dotm 0 0 1 74 426 Full Sail 3 1 523 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Dimensions are 17" x 9

The Ngbandi as well as the Ngbaka live in an area bounded by the Ubangi and Lualaba River systems with the Ngombe scattered along the Lualaba River The Ngbaka moved into the area inhabited by the Ngbandi and as a result both groups share sculpture forms and the details of scarification that often leads to some confusion as to the attribution of their masks. Though both groups use masks they are less numerous among the Ngbandi than among the Ngbaka where masks are known as Dagara and are used during initiation ceremonies known as Ganza or Gaza for young men and when boys are circumcised. The masks of the Ngombe are less finished or detailed and were used during initiation ceremonies known as ‘Mani’.

The primary significance of this type of mask is social(a symbol of social cohesion between disparate groups that have no common leadership) and probably historical(the few communities that possess these masks seem to be the originators of the Kind rites in particular sections of Legaland) Biebuyck, D. Nigeria: RareTribal used African Iljo mask.
Large Old and Rare Tribal us. Nigeria: RareTribal used African Iljo mask. Hadmade from one piece of wood. Height: 43 cm. ed African mask from Igbo. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger Rivr the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political ... moreand social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. African Mask Presentation PAIR brought over by Government official in 50s/60s
These masks were presented in-tribe to a relative of our staff who was allowed inroads to many Countries where others could not go in the late 1950's and 1960's. About all we can say about that but suffice to say that these are one of a kind and not tourist masks. We would suggest that they are very special as they were given in ceremony to the relative. Super dense and heavy wood and of course hand carved. Beautifully detailed and they have a crude deep hanging hole at the top/back. They are about 15" long and have a beautiful coloring. We can't pinpoint the tribe at this point but even a cursory research based on quality will reveal just how inexpensive this set is at the opening bid. Please note: at this reasonable opening bid the consignor reserves the right to no longer offer these items for sale should no bids be placed ... morebefore the last day. Masks of this type and form are not well-known by collectors. It was not until the 1980's that the so-called Kifwebe animal masks were seen on the market in Belgium. Animals represented are those found in the Congo Savanna. The Luba and their neighbors excelled in the production of these masks rather than the Songye. This present mask is more naturalistic than the original Kifwebe of the Songye. It still has the rectangular shape and the striations and the white pigmentation of the Kifwebe masks. The offered mask is special for it represents a monkey. Which symbolizes a male character. Kifwebe mask's purposes for education and social control are well-known. The patina is a rich chocolate brown. The piece is in good condition, displaying typical age related wear marks, though it shows few signs of use. Antique Hand Carved African Whole Head Mask From Mozambique with Hair
You will be bidding on a very old hand carved wooden African whole head mask. It is carved from one piece of wood. This mask was purchased in an antique shop in Tanzania in the early 1990s and belived to have been made in Mozambique. The wood is quite light in weight. It has intricate carving designs on the forehead. Temples, cheeks, chin, nose, and jawline. There is hair on a portion of the head that feels and looks like real hair. This mask measures about 10" by about 8" It would have to be a small head to fit into it. The eyes have no slits on the inside, but the teeth openings do go all the way through, so a person could breathe with the mask on. This mask would be held to the face by hand rather than any kind of strap. It is very realistic. The way it is made, it could be displayed hanging on a wall or sitting on a desk. More ... morethan likely it was worn in some kind of tribal dancing. This one is a little smaller than the one that I listed 2 weeks ago. I do my best to describe items correctly. I want my buyers to be happy with their purchase. When you receive the item and are pleased with it. I would appreciate your leaving positive feedback. Then I will give you positive feedback. If there is a problem, please contact me and I will work with you to resolve it. I ship only to the United States and Canada.

Up for sale today we have this very unique African Kuba helmet mask from Zaire. The Kuba live in the Lower Kasai region of central Zaire in a rich environment of dense forest and savanna. Kuba arts primarily address status. Prestige, and the court; they are manifestations of social and political hierarchy. Rank and wealth are expressed in extensive displays of regalia: jewelry, rich garments of embroidered raffia cloth, ceremonial knives, swords, ... moredrums, and elaborated utilitarian items. Valuable imported cowrie shells and beads emblellish garments, furniture, baskets, and masks. Masking was first introduced by a woman who carved a face on a calabash, the original model for initiation masks. The invention was taken over by men, incorporated into initiation, and remains a male privilege. Once Bushong boys move into the nkan initiation shelter, they can wear masks and make excursions into the village frightening women and small children. More powerful masks are worn by initiation officials. The masked Kuba dancer is, in every instance, a spirit manifestation. Made out of wood with partial tooled copper skin, applied glass beads, cloth cowling, cowry bed, and seed pod fringe. It dates from the early 20th century. It measures roughly 13" x 12" x 10. The Dan, can be clearly seen in the art and culture of the Bassa people, this large ethnic group from central Liberia is clearly a separate culture, with unique art, culture, and language that is entirely their own. With the backbone of their economy resting upon rice production, the Bassa live in a series of relatively small villages that are largely agrarian. Their art production is generally governed by male and female oriented societies, and a variety of masks ... moreand figures are attributed to the culture. Masks are mostly used during ceremonies such as initiation, to entertain esteemed guest, or for community festivities. Figures include maternity figures, ancestor figures, and others, each of which tend toward a similar design with a large head, angular and pointed chin, and a detailed coiffure. Among the most well-known masks from the Bassa people. Is the'Geh-naw' or'gela' mask. These masks are instantly recognizable by their narrow, pointed chin, and long, almost crescent face, generally with a detailed, usually corn-rowed coiffure. These masks are interesting in that they are usually woven into a framework that holds them up and away from the face of the masquerader near the forehead region, hence the commonly applied moniker for them being'forehead masks' Because of this method of use, they generally will not show much, if any, signs of use on the interior surface. The masks are intended to depict a sense of graceful serenity; an almost femininity that is also displayed in the movements of the masquerader while dancing. This mask displays each of these traits, and is quite traditional in design for a Geh-n
Baga Nimba Headdress Mask, African Tribal Creations, art, Guinea, Dumba, Bagga
African Tribal Creations presents. A Baga Nimba Figure Resident to Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. The Baga people are a curious and relatively small ethnic group that reside in a region which floods severely for half of the year. The only method of distance transportion is a dugout canoe, and fishing, as well as marshland agriculture(rice, kola nuts, etc. make up their primary livelihood. A monotheistic people, their only ritual is societal initiation, which occurs only once every twenty four years. Art among the Baga people, as well as tradition, has been significantly depleted and repressed due to the advent of Islam in the region. Their most well-known sculpture, is the Nimba(or Dumba) figure, a large, quasi-humanoid figure that displays a large pair of breasts and a long, narrow, almost equine head with a large nose and human-like facial features. ... moreThe figure stand on four legs and would be hoisted onto the dancer's shoulders, where he would be covered beneath the legs under a skirt of raffia fiber. The figures are produced in a number of sizes, the largest of which are used in fertility ceremonies, especially those timed around agricultural harvest periods. Nimba, in the Baga mythology, is a sort of'Earth mother' called upon for needs of fertility and is representative of the most dignified points of Baga culture. This beautiful Nimba figure is a large domestic size. Meaning a home or shrine sized figure, but not a full sized Nimba(which could often be four to five feet in height, weighing several hundred pounds) It is in beautiful condition, displaying normal age related wear, and is finely detailed, with the numerous linear identifying scarification marks characteristic of these figures. It bears a dark chocolate brown patina, encrusted in several places, which displays the common evidence of age, transport, and exposure, including minor rub marks, scratches, etc. The small spike on the back of the neck has at some point in the past been broken off. This appears to be a very old and minor break. It s

BACKGROUND The Makua are ... morefamous for their half helmet-shaped mask. Which is stylistically related to the Makonde. They were probably carried at the end of long poles during initiation ceremonies. In addition to these helmet masks, they also made some clay and some wooden face masks. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or heddle- pulley which is after all only a functional object for the purpose of weaving seemed to me then and today as beautiful as a Greek goddess. The fetish moved me as deeply as the bobbin by its silent tragic dignity and its air of profound meditation.
