Outstanding & Colorful Kuba Ngaady Amwash Royal Headdress, DRC.
Three types of masks have been associated with dances that take place within the royal compound: the first. Called Mwaash ambooy. Represents Woot, the founder of the Bushoong, the culture hero. The second, known as Nady Amwaash( Ngaady A Mwash) Personifies the wife/sister of Woot, a character said to have been introduced to the pageantry to give greater importance to the role of women. The third mask is called Bwoom. As a character. Bwoom has been interpreted variously as a prince(the king’s younger brother) A commoner, a pygmy, even a subversive element at the royal court. There are many differences among regional stylistic interpretations of the Bwoom mask, but the form’s most pronounced features invariably are its bulging forehead and broad nose. The drama is often reenacted in performances at public ceremonies, initiations, and funerals ... moreeven of untitled men, though they are especially important at the funerals of titleholders. Bwoom is perhaps the oldest of the Kuba royal masquerade triumvirate. PLEASE NOTE. AUCTION IS FOR HEADDRESS ONLY, DOES NOT INCLUDE CAST IRON BASE, USED TO TAKE PHOTOS. Materials: wood. Cloth, cowrie shells, multi colored protective beads covering the headdress. Measurements: 13" in height by 6 1/2" width.

TRIBAL AFRICAN KUBA Of Congo-Kinshasa ROYAL MASK
For your consideration: I purchased this mask at an estate sale in Chicago about 10 years ago. The sale was of a world traveler and there were many fascinating things available for those willing to go out in a snowstorm. Several years ago I moved and decided to list this mask on EBay. I received an email from a member of EBay in Washington DC who said that it was a mask from the Kuba ethnic group in Congo-Kinshasa. The mask was used in dances at the court of the Kuba King. While I have no assurances of it's authenticity. I will give you a detailed and in depth description and will gladly answer any questions you may have regarding this beautiful ethnic piece. The mask is carved from a single piece of wood. On the back of the mask. The holes do not seem conformed in shape, as if a drill were used, they would likely be the same shape, some ... moreholes are larger some smaller. The holes for the eyes are not identical. On the front of the mask. Running down the center of the nose to the chin, the beads are sewn on a strip of cloth. Three colors are used, in the intricate patterning- black, brown, and a lighter brown. The top of the mask looks to be handwoven with seashells in a diamond pattern. There is a diagonal hole near the seam in the top. There are 5 dangling strings of beads and shells that are complete. One is broken and it looks like two dangling ones are missing. The red cloth the intricate pattern of shells that covers the head is cotton. All seams on this mask are hand sewn in large stitches. The brown lines between the shells appear to be small seeds. The brown cloth at the shoulders beneath the shells. Is very rough texture, and may be handwoven as well, but a much smaller thread. The ears on the mask are made of a light wood. I don't believe this to be antique. But by the fabric it is definitely good and vintage. The wood is 10" the teardrop shaped crown is 7" The length in the back 10" I leave it to your expertise it's value- but one thing is for sure- it is a beautiful piece of c

KUBA PALM WINE PRESTIGE CUP #2383 - For African Art Gallery
KUBA PALM WINE CUP#2383 Tribe: Kuba. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Wood. Size: 5.75" 14.6 cm) Item: 2383 Condition: Good. Among the most public forms of display by Kuba men was the use of decorated wooden cups for drinking palm wine. Palm wine(maan) is the principal beverage of choice in much of central Africa. It is still tapped twice a day(early in the morning and again in the late afternoon) from raffia palm trees that are specially cultivated for that purpose. The sweet but tart liquid is brought back to the community in large gourd containers and sold by the cup full. Decorated drinking cups were made in a range of styles. The outer surface of most drinking cups was covered with a single geometric pattern encircling the outer surface of the container. Some examples exhibit a curved decorated handle in the form ... moreof a stylized human being or a human head with an abbreviated body or arm ending in a large hand- a convention also seen on other Kuba sculpture including decorated drums. Some Kuba figurative cups were carved in the form of an entire human body with a large head. Short neck and an abbreviated torso, lower limbs and feet. On other examples, the body is entirely absent, at the large head is positioned above a circular flaring base, or the depiction of an over-sized foot or feet facilitates the cup standing alone. The facial decoration and distinctive hairstyle on the heads of the decorated cups are consistent with other Kuba carving conventions, such as those displayed on Kuba masks. A sharply delineated hairline across the forehead, with abrupt angle at he temples, emphasizes the head and characteristic hairstyle. Some Kuba cups were most likely created to reference their owners' particular occupation or interest. For example. A cup carved in the form of a miniature drum may have originally been commissioned by a musician, or a carved in the form of stacked clay pot, resembling the containers employed to collect palm wine during the tapper process, may have been commissioned

Formerly Zaire, are known for their exquisite raffia woven textiles, carved wooden palm wine cups and cosmetic boxes in interesting shapes, and masks reflecting their elaborate mythology. Bark cloth is known as ISHYEEN among the Kuba. The bark is obtained from a particular tree. After removal the bark is soaked in water until it is soft enough to be worked. Using ivory or wooden pounders one or more men beat the bark against a smooth horizontal tree trunk to expand it and make it softer. Once the bark is dried, the women will apply patterns on the bark by using black dye from the juice of the gardenia seed. Vansina's CHILDREN OF WOOT is a fascinating book about them. Superb 19th C Kuba Mortar D.R. Congo - Belgian Gallery Provenance Old Patina
This is a superb 19th century mortar from the Kuba tribe of Ngeede. D. R. Congo. Kuba artisans were well known for their virtuosic artistry in carving such functional objects as cups. Mortars and other wooden items which served as prestige objects of possessions for their tribal owners. The mortar which is listed in this auction has been carved with a“classic” Kuba head of serene demeanor. High mortar rim and a conical base. It has an exceptionally rich and shiny dark brown patina from use and from great age- the type of patina that is so valued by collectors. One can almost make out where the owner’s hand would have made contact with the wood. Areas like the eyebrows and the tip of the nose have developed their own distinctive silvery patina from years of contact with the oils of the user’s skin. There are minor parts missing such as a small ... moresection of the base. These losses would have occurred a very long time ago, judging from the well-developed patina of the exposed wood grain. Mortars are usually harder to find than other traditional Kuba objects mainly because of the abrasive nature of their use–these items tend to fall apart more quickly. I encourage you to examine the pictures of this superb object carefully and consider either making an offer or purchasing this mortar outright. I am offering it at a starting bid price that is way below its purchase(or even auction) value so I will not re-list this object. I am very motivated to thin down my personal collection at the moment so I will consider all reasonable offers. Provenance: DE HONDT YANNICK Gallery. Brugge, Belgium. Height = 6-11/16 inches. FREE SHIPPING I am currently downsizing and selling part of my personal collection of ethnographic and related materials in order to help pay for my next major project( relocating to a new residence. KUBA AFRICAN ART SHOOWA CLOTH #2281 - For African Art Gallery
KUBA SHOOWA TEXTILE#2281 Tribe: Kuba- Shoowa. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Raffia Palm. Size: 22.75" 57.8 cm) x 20" 50.8 cm) Item: 2281 Condition: Good. Provenance: James E. Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The basic material used in weaving panels of Kuba fabric is the fibre of the raffia palm(raphia vinifera) Which grows throughout the region. The outer layer of the young, plumelike leaves is split(frayed) and the fibres drawn. They may need to be twisted together and beaten to provide the threads used in the textiles. Weaving is the exclusive preserve of men, who work sitting at sloping looms. The finer the fibre, the stronger and tighter the woven fabric will be. The size of the woven panels is determined by the natural length of the raffia fibre; the individual fibres are not artificially lengthened. ... moreHence. Panels usually measure between about 50 x 60 cm and a maximum of 100 x 100 cm. The cloths are soaked. Kneaded and beaten to make them soft and supple. The basic reddish tone of the velvet is obtained by dyeing the untreated fabric using a powder made from red wood. Yellow ochre background colours are more common, however. The cloths are embroidered by women. The technique of cut-pile embroidery consists of passing threads between the warp and weft threads with a needle. Without any visible stitches or knots. The threads are then cut to leave a pile of about 2mm on either side, with the velvet fibres are secured in the middle only by the tightness of the underlying weave. The Shoowa are real masters of this technique, which demands a great deal of skill. An enormous amount of work is involved in making a raffia cut-pile panel. It is a process that can take between several months and more than a year. So it is not surprising that cut-pile"velvet" cloths are treasured as objects of value. For embroidery incorporating more than one colour(a technique found almost exclusively among the Shoowa) The raffia fibres are coloured with plant dyes before embroidering. The

SALE !! TRIBAL AFRICAN KUBA Of Congo-Kinshasa ROYAL MASK
PLEASE NOTE; ITEMS WILL MAILED ON OCTOBER 23. AS I AM OUT OF TOWN PICKING UP MORE FABULOUS ITEMS FROM MY FAMILY'S ESTATE For your consideration: I purchased this mask at an estate sale in Chicago about 10 years ago. On the ... moreback of the mask. The holes do not seem conformed in shape, as if a drill were used, they would likely be the same shape, some holes are larger some smaller. The wood is 10" the teardrop shaped crown is 7" The len

Kuba Raffia Textile Appliqued Matisse Superb Ceremonial Skirt African Large
Title, Kuba Raffia Textile Appliqued Matisse Superb African Textile, Type of Object, Kuba Raffia Textile Appliqued Matisse Superb, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba, Materials, Raffia Approximate Age, contemporary. Dimensions, 191 inches x 60 inches, Overall Condition, Good Damage/Repair, General wear. Stains, seam/ stitching hole We do not recommend laundering textiles. And do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: A superb raffia appliqued woman's skirt from the Kuba! This large raffia ... moreskirt is a multi-panel skirt that was worn wrapped multiple times around the waist. By the Kuba women in the Kuba Kingdom, which is in the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire. This is a great piece of textile made by both men and women. Men did the weaving, women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm tree, is notoriously difficult to work with. Soaking and pounding were both used to soften the fibers. Each piece took months to make. Matisse was hugely influenced by these textiles, and had a number of them in his bedroom! I wrote a book on them. See Elizabeth S. Bennett and Niangi Batulukisi Ph.D. Kuba Textiles& Design, AfricaDirect Inc. 2009, 41 pages. 28 full color photographs, paperback. KUBA AFRICAN ART SHOOWA CLOTH #2297 - For African Art Gallery
KUBA SHOOWA TEXTILE#2297 Tribe: Kuba- Shoowa. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Raffia Palm. Size: 24" 61 cm) x 21.5" 54.6 cm) Item: 2297 Condition: Good. The roo

African Congo Rwanda KUBA Wooden Lidded Box HardCarved Beautiful Colors 15x7x11
Brought back from a trip to Rwanda in 2008- this African KUBA box is stunning. It measures 15x11x7 and is entirely handcarved. There are African figures on the front 7x6" and top 5x3.5" painted in rich patinated hues. This is lidded with hand spun rope threaded through. The inside measures 3" wide x 10" long and was obviously used at one point- which just adds to the beauty of this. There are NO FLAWS at all- the colors are more vibrant than in the photos. Really a collectors piece.

On this mask, the surface is dark brown and shows much handling. Pwoo Itok and Isheen Maal(also called Pwoom Itok and ishyeenmaal or Shene Malula) This type of mask is found among the Kuba-Bushoong. The Shoowa, and the Ngeende peoples. According to some sources, I sheen Maal was inspired by Pwoo Itok. In any case. The difference between the two is hard to detect and in the literature they are seen as the same mask, with different names depending on where the mask was found. Most likely the Shoowa use the Pwoo Itok while the Kuba prefer the term Isheen Maal. Such masks were used as a dancing mask during the initiation of young men and among the Bushoong it was worn by members of the Batende. A secret regulatory society which had among its duties the apprehension of criminals. The Ngeende group claims to be descended from Ishweemy. One of the nine sons of Woot, the primordial founder of the Kuba Kingdom. Accordingly, the Ngeende are of special importance to the Kuba Kingdom and designated as the holders of the Kuba official charms

The roo
