Raffia ... morefiber, cowrie shells, beads, pigment, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 12 inches x 9 inches W. Overall Condition, Fair to Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. A woven raffia material, with pearls embedded in it, covers the nose and the mouth. The coil at the back of the head is made entirely of cloth and decorated with interwoven cowries. Rows of alternating white and blue beads hang from the top of the headdress. Weevils(nyeem) are often attached to the end of these rows. According to some scholars Ngaady a mwaash may ha

Kuba Royal Drum Cowry Shells Beads Museum Collection
Title, Kuba Royal Drum Cowrie Shells Beads Snakeskin, Type of Object, Musical Instrument. Drum, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba, Materials, Wood. Shells, beads, fabric, raffia fiber, snakeskin. Approximate Age, Mid 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 24 inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, center post is also covered in snakeskin. Head has a small tear on one edge. Missing cowrie shells, loose handle, small tears. Provenance: From a collection of African-made beads and beadwork displayed at the South Dakota Art Museum in 2011. Additional Information: A superb drum and still sounds wonderful. The drum is ornamented with cowrie shells and beads beautifully ranged and forming motifs commonly seen on Kuba sculpture and textiles. The abundance of beads and cowrie shells and the use of snake skin indicate that the drum was ... morereserved for royalty. The beads and cowrie shells symbolize wealthy. Prosperity and fecundity. Decorated drums like these belonged to the King and are known as drums of office. Royal drums such as this are rarely played to accompany dances and musicians. They are only played at the beginning of royal dances that take place at the appearance of the new moon. They are mainly used as symbol of the royal presence and displayed side by side with other objects of prestige. They are part of the king treasury and are employed as a symbol of authority. Each king should commission the drum(s) of his reign. Pelambish is the generic name for royal drums. Each drum would have its owner's name and would be kept in the royal court. For more examples see Cornet Joseph. Art Royal Kuba, 1982, Edizioni Sipiel Milano. Kuba Bwoom Helmet Mask Dr. Mason Collection DR Congo African
Title, Kuba Bwoom Helmet Mask Dr. Mason Collection DR Congo African Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Bushoong, Materials, Wood. Hide, metal(cooper) beads, cowrie shells, Approximate Age, mid 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 16 inches. Width is 10 inches. Depth is 9 inches. Overall Condition, FAir Damage. Repair: Some damage to beadwork on back and leather on top. Fur is falling out. Additional Information: A unique and stunning example of one of the three accepted Kuba"royal" masks. Featuring exquisite geometric decoration. Intricate woven fringes with cowries, and an expressive, even sardonic smile, this is an outstanding and beautiful example, lacking the sometimes overly-adorned beaded face. In fact, without the bulging forehead which identifies"Bwoom, the mask would have been difficult ... moreto categorize. This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, as the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. This colorful trio of characters comprises the recognized pantheon of the royal helmet masks, which are eagerly sought-after by collectors and museums. See SCULPTURE AFRICAINE, by Fagg. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an underslung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries. And beads are found on nose, forehead, lips, and back of headdress. The raffia is hand-woven. This mask has a lot of presence and would stand out in any collection. Using ivory or wooden pounders one or more men beat the bark against a smooth horizontal tree trunk to expand it and make it softer. Once the bark is dried, the women will apply patterns on the bark by using black dye from the juice of the gardenia seed. Vansina's CHILDREN OF WOOT is a fascinating book about them. African Kuba Woven Raffia Dance Skirt/Applique,Stitch Dye/30"x9'/Estate Purchase
Beautiful raffia woven dance skirt. With abstract applique images along the edge and stitch dyeing in the center, made by the Kuba(Bakuba) people of Zaire/DR Congo; 30" W x 9' 10” L. Piece is very old and has been worn and cherished through many years. There are usually a few holes or spots on the textiles, in most cases on one end which may have been the inside or the outside when wrapped around the wearer, and also because the raffia has to be pounded to make it soft enough to weave and then dye. Pictures show the few holes on this work. Kuba textiles are said to have a 400 year history. And were discovered and collected by early Europeans, especially the Belgians who took them back to Europe after seeing them in the 1700's while exploring what was to become the Belgium Congo. Modern artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Klee, ... moreand others collected and were influenced by the contemporary designs of the Kuba textiles in their own works. The applique design on this piece reminds me of the Matisse cut-outs and was called the“Matisse” applique by the people sellling the estate below. The Kuba works I will be listing came from the estate of a Santa Fe long time collector and dealer in ethnographic art. Especially works from Africa. One of his specialties was textiles from the Congo, including a VAST collection of Kuba items which I have just acquired. His collecting started in the 1960's and 70's, when he had a gallery in Santa Fe, and there were many old and rare items at the estate sales of his large collection. Pieces from him have been exhibited and donated to many museums in the United States, and in 1996 the Auckland Museum in New Zealand had an exhibition of his Kuba textiles. For collectors or dealers interested in a large quantity of Kuba squares and/or skirts, I can offer a discount or wholesale prices, since I have many great things! gsrx_vers_526(GS 6.6.6(526)

Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The basic material used in weaving panels of Kuba fabric is the fibre of the raffia palm(raphia vinifera) Which grows throughout the region. The outer layer of the young, plumelike leaves is split(frayed) and the fibres drawn. They may need to be twisted together and beaten to provide the threads used in the textiles. Weaving is the exclusive preserve of men, who work sitting at sloping looms. The finer the fibre, the stronger and tighter the woven fabric will be. The size of the woven panels is determined by the natural length of the raffia fibre; the individual fibres are not artificially lengthened. ... moreHence. Panels usually measure between about 50 x 60 cm and a maximum of 100 x 100 cm. The cloths are soaked. Kneaded and beaten to make them soft and supple. The basic reddish tone of the velvet is obtained by dyeing the untreated fabric using a powder made from red wood. Yellow ochre background colours are more common, however. The cloths are embroidered by women. The technique of cut-pile embroidery consists of passing threads between the warp and weft threads with a needle. Without any visible stitches or knots. The threads are then cut to leave a pile of about 2mm on either side, with the velvet fibres are secured in the middle only by the tightness of the underlying weave. The Shoowa are real masters of this technique, which demands a great deal of skill. An enormous amount of work is involved in making a raffia cut-pile panel. It is a process that can take between several months and more than a year. So it is not surprising that cut-pile"velvet" cloths are treasured as objects of value. For embroidery incorporating more than one colour(a technique found almost exclusively among the Shoowa) The raffia fibres are coloured with plant dyes before embroidering. The

Antique Caucasian "Seichur Kuba" style rug – 1892 – Rare Rose Patternhttp://csr.
This gorgeous rug was in my grandmother’s house from the late 1920’s in Kansas City and then my mother’s. My grandfather’s brother was a globetrotter after the First World War and constantly sent items back that made my Grandparents house a fascinating place. It was purchased in Turkey by him during that time. I have never seen another rose pattern like this. Which would have appealed to him. Unusual colors in the background of teals& greens with red/pink and yellow/gold roses in the foreground. You can see the condition from the photos as well as the marking on the back from which a rug dealer dated it. To me it seems to be in very good condition with no marks or tears or significant wear spots on the rug though the picture with the fringe is uneven and shows that it was really used as a rug. Appliqué is the most popular weaving technique among the Kuba. To create an appliqué. Kuba artists use a stencil to cut decorative designs out of a brightly colored cloth, and then sew or apply the designs onto a cloth of a different color. The designs are then placed on top of yet another cloth. Through this process, the artist has the freedom to create an almost unlimited variety of patterns and combinations. The most familiar appliqués are dark brown or black on an ecru background. A pattern which is sometimes seen in reverse. Other popular appliqués are red or yellow, or are placed on a red or yellow back

Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: The BaKuba of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Formerly Zaire, are known for their exquisite raffia woven textiles, carved wooden palm wine cups and cosmetic boxes in interesting shapes, and masks reflecting their elaborate mythology. Bark cloth is known as ISHYEEN among the Kuba. The bark is obtained from a particular tree. After removal the bark is soaked in water until it is soft enough to be worked.
