And do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washingÂ(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: A Kuba square raffia textile decorated with finial diamond motifs. The following are excerpts from Kuba Textiles and Design. By Elizabeth S. Bennett and Niangi Batulukisi Ph.D. In sub-Saharan Africa. Where representative art has flourished for centuries, carvers and crafts people have typically taken for their subjects human figures, animals, plants, and elements of the natural world. Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no coincidence: all of those artists were inspired by Kuba design! The most commonly known of the Kuba textiles are the cut-pile Shoowa or Kasai Velvets. Named after the river

Today you have a unique opportunity to own a part of an impressive collection of original African objects which is now being liquidated due to several ... moreunforeseen circumstances. Please check out all of our auctions for other interesting pieces! This mask is being sold as part of a private collection of African tribal art and artifacts. It was appraised as part of a larger collection in 2005 which has since been divided. And an appraiser estimated its value at only $260 at that time almost a decade ago. Much of the collection has since been sold privately or gifted to different institutional organizations. Objects that remain from this collection are of very good quality, and some have been recently exhibited and displayed to the public in Georgia. An excerpt from the appraisal is scanned to the photographs within this auction, and is reflective of the appraiser's opinion of this piece's value in 2005. The appraisal is not included with the auction, you are buying the mask alone. All reasonable offers considered. Please inspect our high resolution photographs prior to bidding; as this is a liquidation, no refunds or exchanges are permitted. KUBA AFRICAN ART SHOOWA CLOTH #2291 - For African Art Gallery
KUBA SHOOWA TEXTILE#2291 Tribe: Kuba- Shoowa. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Raffia Palm. Size: 25.25" 64.1 cm) x 22.5" 52.1 cm) Item: 2291 Condition: Good. Provenance: James E. Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The basic material used in weaving panels of Kuba fabric is the fibre of the raffia palm(raphia vinifera) Which grows throughout the region. The outer layer of the young, plumelike leaves is split(frayed) and the fibres drawn. They may need to be twisted together and beaten to provide the threads used in the textiles. Weaving is the exclusive preserve of men, who work sitting at sloping looms. The finer the fibre, the stronger and tighter the woven fabric will be. The size of the woven panels is determined by the natural length of the raffia fibre; the individual fibres are not artificially lengthened. ... moreHence. Panels usually measure between about 50 x 60 cm and a maximum of 100 x 100 cm. The cloths are soaked. Kneaded and beaten to make them soft and supple. The basic reddish tone of the velvet is obtained by dyeing the untreated fabric using a powder made from red wood. Yellow ochre background colours are more common, however. The cloths are embroidered by women. The technique of cut-pile embroidery consists of passing threads between the warp and weft threads with a needle. Without any visible stitches or knots. The threads are then cut to leave a pile of about 2mm on either side, with the velvet fibres are secured in the middle only by the tightness of the underlying weave. The Shoowa are real masters of this technique, which demands a great deal of skill. An enormous amount of work is involved in making a raffia cut-pile panel. It is a process that can take between several months and more than a year. So it is not surprising that cut-pile"velvet" cloths are treasured as objects of value. For embroidery incorporating more than one colour(a technique found almost exclusively among the Shoowa) The raffia fibres are coloured with plant dyes before embroidering. Th

A Fine Authentic African Drum - Kuba People, D.R.C. (formerly Zaire).
Kuba. D.R.C. dating from the mid 20th century. Hand carved and decorated from a single section of native hard-wood timber. This fine example incorporates an unusual human forearm and hand as an integral handle- detailed above. The surface is decorated with complex geometric and lattice form carving- typical of Kuba embellishment. The carving is highlighted with heat blackening. no burn't smell now present- a sign of genuine age. Impressive Kuba Wall Mask, Democratic Republic of Congo
The art of the Kuba is one of the most highly developed of all African traditions. And significant cultural accomplishments are part of their heritage. Among the best known of Kuba art forms are royal portrait figures, ndop. Idealized representations. An ndop may have played a role in the installation of the king. And during his life it is said to have been not only a portrait but also the soul double of the king. Whatever happened to him was believed to happen to it as well. Closely associated with the king’s fertility, the ndop was kept in the woman’s quarters. And was placed next to his wives during childbirth to ensure safe delivery. The kings typically sit facing forward with legs crossed, the left in front of the right; the right hand, with fingers extended, rests on the right knee, and the left hand holds the royal dagger. Geometric ... morepatterns cover the stomach and are continued on the back of the figure. The royal statues show the king wearing a rectangular shody hat. They are mounted on quadrangular pedestals. The sculptures include objects significant to each particular king, identifying his own personal accomplishments. Developing from the court style was a popular style, which utilized geometric forms instead of the well-modeled, full-volume forms of the court figures. Kuba fetishes, emphasizing only essential organs, are highly schematic. The popular style can also be found in the utensils and textiles produced by the Kuba. Over twenty types of masks are used among the Kuba. With meanings and functions that vary from group to group. Kuba wooden helmet masks are probably the most commonly produced items. Popular with the collectors. These striking masks are wonderfully decorated with geometrical surface designs in dazzling contrasts of color, pattern, and texture. Hide, animal hair, fur, beads, cowrie shells, and feathers ornament the masks, and costumes of bark-cloth, raffia fiber fabric, and beaded elements complete the manifestation of nature spirits, intermediaries between the Supreme Being and th

Super Long Handmade African Kuba Cloth; Tribal, Ethnographic
The piece shown is so long that it is doubled over for display. My sister sent me several Kuba clothpieces when she lived in The Democratic Republic of Congo. This special tribalcloth is made from woven palm raffia. Dyed raffia is appliqued over a plainlayer in geometric patterns. When she lived in the Congo she tookadvantage of the opportunity to begin building her Kuba cloth collection–visiting the Congolese vendors in town. This fabric cannot ever be washed. They smell of freshly cut grass and thedesign has some slight irregularities which add to their beauty. Please note that there are some spots that appear to be worn- but the artisan continued to place applique over these spots. Also, one small piece was not hemmed- as noted in the picture. This piece measures approximately 81”long by 25” wide.

Not many people want to pay for shipping a crated frame. I have the frames and glass if someone is interested in paying for crating. Shipping and insurance. Thanks for asking. Where representative art has flourished for centuries, carvers and crafts people have typically taken for their subjects human figures, animals, plants, and elements of ... morethe natural world. Appliqué is the most popular weaving technique among the Kuba. To create an appliqué. Kuba artists use a stencil to cut decorative designs out of a brightly colored cloth, and then sew or apply the designs onto a cloth of a different color. The designs are then placed on top of yet another cloth. Through this process, the artist has the freedom to create an almost unlimited variety of patterns and combinations. The most familiar appliqués are dark brown or black on an ecru background. A pattern which is sometimes seen in reverse. Other popular appliqu&#

Vintage African Raffia Kuba Square/Kasai Velvet, Butala/Estate Purchase/21"x19"
Beautiful. 21" x 19" raffia embroidered, Kasai(named after the river where the Kuba live) Velvet" square, made by the Kuba(Bakuba) people of the Congo. This particular textile is called a butala(boutallah) for its higher rafia pile. Kuba textiles are said to have a 400 year history. And were discovered and collected by early Europeans, especially the Belgians who took them back to Europe after seeing them in the 1700's while exploring what was to become the Belgium Congo. Modern European artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Klee, and others collected and were influenced in their own works by these textiles. Squares were originally used as currency and as valuable products for trade and exchange. As tributes villagers paid annually to their kings, in dowries for weddings, and in funeral gifts and offerings to the dead. Colonial ... moreagents and missionaries arriving in the Kuba Kingdom in the 19th century encouraged women to produce them to adorn religious vestments for Catholic missionaries and to adorn the interiors of European houses. Squares are made of raffia woven by men and then embroidered by women who then cut the raffia thread to appear as velvet. Improvisation and irregularity characterize the cloths because the weaver works without a plan or preliminary drawing. Often the design is built up from memory. Repeating the most common designs and color combinations found in the region. The message conveyed is up to the artist, who is the only one who can explain what was intended to be represented. Some cut-pile cloths are very finely textured, while others are much thicker and plusher. The Kuba works I will be listing came from the estate of a Santa Fe long time collector and dealer in ethnographic art. Especially works from Africa. One of his specialties was textiles from the Congo, including a VAST collection of Kuba items which I have just acquired. His collecting started in the 1960's and 70's, when he had a gallery in Santa Fe, and there were many old and rare items at the estate sale

Although part of a tradition ... morethat stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. The most commonly known of the Kuba textiles are the cut-pile Shoowa or Kasai Velvets. Named after the river along which the BaKuba live. Improvisation and irregularity characterize the Kasai Velvets. This is because the weaver works without a plan or preliminary sketching, though the model can occasionally be displayed on the cloth in advance using black thread. Often the design is built up from memory, repeating the most common designs and color combinations found in the region. The message conveyed is up to the artist, who is the only one who can explain what he or she intended to represent. Originally Kasai Velvets were used as currency. And were valuable products for trade and exchange. They could be included in the tribute villagers paid annually to the King, in

And were discovered and collected by early Europeans, especially the Belgians who took them back to Europe after seeing them in the 1700's while exploring what was to become the Belgium Congo. Squares were originally used as currency and as valuable products for trade and exchange. As tributes villagers paid annually to their kings, in dowries for weddings, and in funeral gifts and offerings to the dead. Colonial agents and missionaries arriving in the Kuba Kingdom in the 19th ... morecentury encouraged women to produce them to adorn religious vestments for Catholic missionaries and to adorn the interiors of European houses. Many modern artists such as like Klee. Matisse, and Picasso collected and were influenced by them because of the wonderful abstract designs. African, Kuba Woven, Embroidered Raffia Dance Skirt, Estate Purchase/64"x 24"
Beautiful. 64" x 24" dance skirt made by the Kuba(Bakuba) people of Zaire/DR Congo. Work is woven raffia, embroidered in the center with a wonderful abstract design and outlined on three sides with a dark, black"velvet" pile design that is decorated with eyelets and triangles. The outside has a red strip and heavy overhand stitching which give the piece a"wavy" edging. I have seen this type of skirt or apron with more red in the center, and it is said to by made for Kings and royal family members. I don't know if the small red strip qualifies for it to be a"royal" textile, but it certainly would be made for a person of status with all the intricate work and details.
